1. The number 7 highlights that this is Rhianna’s 7th
studio album
therefore establishing her success. To help enhance promotion of
this album Rhianna’s tour was called 7/7/7, this was for 7 days, in
which she attended and performed in 7 different countries; this was
to create global awareness of her new album and create album sales,
overall increasing revenue.
Rhianna is naked on the front of her digipack, with
graffiti style writing covering her body. This could
be said to portray her as a sex icon but I believe it
to have a different meaning. I believe Rhianna
being naked on this digipack front cover is more
about vulnerability, she is showing her softer side
as an artist; the words are describing her as a
person e.g. fearless so this could show that she is
opening herself up and revealing her true self to
the audience but she is unapologetic for this, this
could also be an indication for what the songs on
the album are like. Thefact that the word love is
covering her face again portraying her as
vulnerable, it could suggest she has had bad
experiences of this is the past.
Black font has connotations of Power, mystery, death and elegance.
White font has connotations of innocence and purity. In
juxtaposition to each other it suggests that Rhianna contains all of
these traits. The fact that she is naked could be seen as powerful
and mysterious but also natural and pure. Rhianna is centred right
in the middle of the shot suggesting she is powerful and in control.
The direct address of her looking at the camera also suggests to the
audience that she is powerful but reaching out to them.
The fact that the word censored is around
her neck could suggest that she feels
trapped and cannot express her true feelings
in the music industry. The word
unapologetic contrasts with this, it could
suggest that this album is different from her
others and the content is different, she has
made more rugged and truthful content and
she isn’t sorry for that, she will no longer be
censored and will sing what she wants and
express herself freely, all of her flaws
included.
Rhiannais featuredon the front and
back pageof her digipack. This is extremely
important as her fanswill expectto see her
featured on the digipack asher image will
help the recordsale.Rhianna’sStar theory
revolves aroundherbeinga slightly rebellious
sex icon, shown via the way she dresses, the
content of her songsetc. On thisdigipackthe
word ‘Unapologeticshowsthat sheis not
sorry for notconformingto society’s
standards and for the Taboo personathat
revolves aroundherstar image,this could
suggest thatthe content in hernew albumis
also taboo e.g explicit language, it suggests
that she is not sorry for being
herself. The graffiti style writingalsohelpsto
portray this as graffiti is a taboo subjectin
society andit is portrayedas a bad thing. The
writing alsolookslike it hasbeen scribbled
over her, this couldsuggest thatshefeels
labelledby otherpeople.
Rhianna’s fans are
often referred to as
the navy. Shows her
appreciation for them
and suggest she views
them as strong and
loyal as this is the
stereotype of the
navy. Fans will feel like
she is relating to them
and buy the album.
The black and white colourscheme andthefact
that she is lookingaway fromthecameraagain
create a vulnerability about her. Thisimageis quite
simplistic, she is nakedbutsheseems morepure as
she isn’tlooking atthe audience and she is covered
by a jacket.The edgy jacketshowsherpersonality
in this butit seems like it overwhelms her in this
image, again this could suggest a different in her
musical style,The graffiti stylewritingis back,but
she is lookingaway fromthe song titles, thiscould
suggest thatthe songsreveala lot abouther and
she doesn’t want toface her problems.
The disc contains the dark colour scheme
e.g. black, white and grey – that is present
throughout the whole of the digi pack. The
image on the CD has no real link to the
images on the back and front of the digi
pack and the image is hard to make out,
although the image appears mysterious
and sinister. This could represent her soul
to the audience – that everything about
her is revealed in this CD and she wants
them to realise this.
ROC nation is the record label that
Rhianna is signed too. This works as a
promotional tool for the institution.
