Question 2
1.
2. CONSTRUCTIONIST THEORY: WHAT IS IT?
The constructionist theory is the idea that the media product and what it
represents can be made up of what the producer themselves thinks,
what society at the time would think and the reality.
From all this information the audience then choose whether or not to
accept the representation that they are being shown within the media
product. But also which view it is that they wish to see as the correct
one to acknowledge and take away from the specific media product.
3. CONSTRUCTIONIST THEORY
The representation that I am applying to this theory is that introverted people don’t
really talk a lot and aren't very sociable
Firstly it can be seen theta the opinion of the producer is that:
Introverted people are very quiet
What it is like in reality:
They don’t feel the need to gain attention from other people as they are fullfilled tby
spending time by themselves and extroverted people need some thing else to give
them this type of fulfilment.
It is also proven that there are many medical conditions that can lead someone
becoming an introvert such as depression or anxiety, that often do not come into
consideration when the media are portraying these types of people. Which is
similar to our production as we have not described why she is an introvert.
What the opinion of society today would be:
modern society have become more aware of further more complicated issues that can
lead people to become an introvert such as mental health problems especially as
these have become more acceptable to talk about within society.
4. CONSTRUCTIONIST THEORY
Another type of representation that the audience could see within the
production would be that women are more introverted
The opinion of the producer within our production is that:
Women don’t want to attract all the attention to themselves a lot of the time
What it actually is like in reality:
Women are actually just as loud as men, but men seem to think that they
need to overpower everyone to be the man
What people at the time will be most likely to think:
Women are weaker than men and so therefore are not as willing to share
their opinion which does not matter as much anyway
5. CONSTRUCTIONIST THEORY
A representation that is shown within this production is that university students
do very well after university and that as soon as you finish university you are
going to become successful and go straight into a job
Another opinion of the producer that can be shown within the opening sequence
would be that:
That students aren't doing as badly as people think they are when they come out
of university:
What the reality of this situation is:
That students have a lot of loans to pay off that continue into their late 30’s so
they are all ion some kind of debt but it depends also on what they choose to
spend the disposable income on, as many choose to go out with their
friends.
What society tends to think:
Is that students just don’t have the money so they can only save up so much
money and it isnt going to be loads so it is likely that whatever they do buy
is not going to be of top quality, compared to h9ow it will be in the future
when they have more money.
6. DOES OUR REPRESENTATION SUIT OUR
INSTITUTION?
I would say that our representations do suit the institution as we are making a
product that is an independent film. These types of films are often trying to
achieve ‘social realistic’ themes and the reason for this is that they don’t
want to be like the more mainstreams films that have the Hollywood
narrative, instead they are aiming to create a film that is relatable to real life.
To suit the niche sophisticated audience that they are aiming to please and
challenge.
So we have included things that highlight and suit the stereotypical
representations however much like real life situation we have decided to
challenge these stereotypical ideas and norms.
However one representation that I would suggest that we didn’t really challenge
to much was the gender idea as I think it would have been more significant to
the audience to see a male in this type of position as they will not be seen as
the most powerful and to put the art teacher within our production as a
female. As this would challenge the idea of power and the stereotypical view
that men should always be in control and of a higher position than women.
This would then also challenge the idea of hegemony.
