This issue of SHEQ recognises the importance of continual improvement, and
placing a focus on developing efficient methods for safety. Whether it be in
toolbox meetings, through the safety news network or learning something
new about the role PPE plays in keeping us safe. Safety is not static and must
be continually evaluated and improved wherever possible. Enjoy this issue and
we hope that it continues to assist you to Think Safe, Act Safe.
Welcome!
SAFETY – THE CORNERSTONE OF OUR BUSINESS
A toolbox meeting (or Pre Start Instruction meeting) is a valuable safety tool.
This meeting is designed to focus on production issues, quality, discipline
concerns as well as OH&S. A toolbox meeting is to be attended by all
employees in the workgroup or team, is conducted in the workplace and are
normally short in duration but held frequently as required.

Centurion recently welcomed the arrival of two brand new specialised tyre trailers to its existing fleet. The patented tyre trailer technology is leading the way
in safety and innovation. Recognising a number of risks associated with the loading, restraining, transportation and unloading of oversized tyres, Centurion
devised a clever solution to increase safety during this process.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
• Speciallydesignedhydraulicarmsholdeachoversizetyreinplace

• Tyresareloadedandunloadeddirectlyusingatyrehandlingforklift.

JCB Construction Equipment Australia Toolbox Meetings
JCB Construction Equipment Australia branches have
recently placed an emphasis on ensuring that toolbox
meetings are conducted regularly and consistently,
amongst the branches meetings are currently held
anywhere from once a month to once a week.
TheinformationincludedinSHEQisofageneralnatureandisnotintendedtosubstituteforprofessionalmedicaladvice.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
• Safer loading and unloading - Minimises risk of injury through manual
tasking, with no need for manual restraints and traditional forklift
loading process.
• Safer transportation - Eliminates risk of insufficient or incorrectly
tightened load restraints.
• Safer roads for the community – the tyre trailer travels as a standard
configuration (not oversize), thus eliminated risks associated with
oversize transportation
Centurion’s specialised tyre trailer is setting the standard in the safe transportation of oversize tyres for
all involved, from the loader to the wider road-using community. An additional two trailers are currently
under construction.
The training Team from Team Cape have been working for 12 months on
mapping all mobile machinery in our fleet to their relevant national competency
under the RII09 Resources and Infrastructure Industry Training Package.
TeamCapeLaunchesInternalTraining

The quality of work produced by the training Team has been outstanding
and this initiative will provide a number of benefits to Team Cape;
• AddedvalueforouroperationalTeammembersthroughattainmentof

• Abilitytomaintainahighstandardofmotivatedmachineryoperatorswho

The structure of this training regime will shortly be complemented by a
designated training venue at the head office yard area where specific
training can be undertaken remote from site if required. This will also
allow for challenge tests to perspective Team members to ascertain levels
of competence prior to employment being offered.
The training package will be rolled out to all operational sites in October.
The ability to provide competent, complete in-house training to such a high
standard allows Team Cape to stay ahead of the competition. Safety starts
with training and the diversity of mobile equipment in our fleet has always
provided a challenge to ensure valid competencies have been attained.
The mobile equipment covered by the Team includes;
• Dumptrucks–rigidandarticulated
• Heavyhaulage–sidetippers
• Trackedhydraulicexcavators
• Frontendwheelloaders
• Interchangeabletoolcarriers
• Trackeddozers
• Watercarts
• Rollers/compactor
• MotorScrapers

2. Accreditations
on the Horizon
CenturionLaunchesits
SafetyNewsNetwork(SNN)
To formally recognise our commitment to safety, environment and quality
across the CFC Group, we will be working towards attaining accreditation
for each of our companies in these critical areas. Some of the companies
in the group already have specific ISO level accreditations, so the goal is to
make this consistent across the CFC Group.
We are currently in the process of updating all our systems in preparation
for review and then initial auditing by a third party company. The certifying
of these systems will not only formally recognise our commitment to
safety, environment and quality, but also enhance our saleability to like-
minded companies, looking to partner with companies such as those in
the CFC Group.
This is an involved, long-term process
and we aim to have all certifications in
place within the next 12 months.

Underground Services recently celebrated a very significant milestone,
achieving 2 years without a single Lost Time Injury (LTI) as of June 30th 2012.
This achievement reflects the company’s strong safety culture and is a credit to
everyone involved. The milestone was marked with a presentation from CFC
Group Executive Chairman, Philip Cardaci to the team at Underground Services
with a number of key clients also joining them in recognition of the achievement.
