PCB Technical Supervisor
Manage the day-to-day activities of the PCBA Repair department. Upon day of hire, by using lean manufacturing principals,
step-up to the challenge to manage the PCBA manufacturing value stream by reducing manufacturing test fall-out, idle
inventory and manufacturing scrap rates.
Initial Challenges and Opportunities:
• Eliminate 1.6 million dollars worth of PCBA inventory sitting idle in an inventory stock location labeled as IPCB, a
location where defective PCB sub-assemblies are awaiting action and disposition.
• Reduce high manufacturing PCBA test fallout.
• Increase an otherwise a very low success rate with PCBA Repair in BGA component replacement.
• Raise otherwise LOW moral of PCBA repair team personnel.
In essence, there existed no structure, mechanisms nor tools in place or available to conquer the challenges at hand.
(A supervisor on the manufacturing floor, warned me that I was stepping into a hornets nest – this person was right...., and I enjoyed every minute of it)
Upon hiring, my mission was to setup a PCBA repair center. My accomplishments include:
• Reduce capital loss by incorporating PCBA repair directly into the manufacturing value stream, (for test fallout).
• Provide a feedback process reporting PCBA root-cause failures.
• Reduce parent assembly warranty and refurbishing costs to Honeywell Customer Service, (EMEA and North
America), by filling the supply chain with recycled PCBA's.
My responsibilities also included:
• Manufacturing support in setting up and monitoring PCB reflow oven profiles.
• Maintenance, upkeep of dedicated electronic PCBA test equipment in supporting the manufacturing test lines.
• Created a comprehensive Access-Visual-BASIC PCBA Data Base.
◦ Issues a serial number to each PCBA
◦ Monitors each PCBA's repair history.
◦ Provides a module to provide repair solutions for symptoms.
◦ Track route cause for PCBA test failures.
◦ Generates daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly reports, tracking costs and throughput trends.
◦ Data is regularly examined and used for process improvements.
◦ Repaired PCBA trace-ability;
▪ Repaired PCBA’s are entered into the data base documenting its repair activity
▪ Tracks repair cycles; automatic scrap after 3 cycles.
▪ Repair History look-up.
◦ Module to track manufacturing fallout.
◦ Module for RMA Tracking, designed to track, trend and analyze root cause.
◦ Module for component cross referencing for End of Life, (EOL), components.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provide leadership and guidance to technicians and associates in day to day activities according to daily demands.
• Support Design Engineering in various tasks; component replacement, test, new product performance reports.
• Participate in NPI, (New Product Introduction), design for manufacturing in planning manufacturing process lines,
writing procedure, test equipment enhancement, and provide training, (e.g. DFM).
• Determine required Test Equipment.
• Determine manpower and technical requirements.
• Monitor, evaluate, and seek process improvement to increase product quality, throughput and efficiencies.
• Write repair, (production), processes and procedures; used Coral Draw, VISIO and MSWORD.
• Build special test rigs to assist technicians in diagnostics and troubleshooting to component level, perform Final and
Quality Assurance testing.
• Create and program the AirVac DRS25 PCB BGA rework machine for PCBA and component specific profiles.
• Test, troubleshoot and repair PCBA's to component level working from schematic diagrams, and specification
documents.
