Sundyne HMD Kontro Operation Protection
for Sealless Pumps
Working with end-users to evaluate pump failures, HMD Kontro has identified the most
common areas of concern. In doing so, it has created pump protection devices to address
the specific sealless pump issues causing pump failure. The Sundyne HMD Kontro protection
devices provide multiple benefits that include: 1) Early problem identification, 2) Reduced
callouts to false alarms, 3) Conformity to most worldwide standards, 4) Retro-fitting to existing
pumps in service, 5) Constant monitoring of pump performances, 6) Protection against opera-
tor error, and 7) Easy integration with new or existing DCS Systems.
(Continued on next page)
Monitoring Device Locations
It’s a well known fact in the sealless-pump world
that unwanted failures sometimes happen. Pumps
become operationally sensitive as a result of unstable
process conditions. With the tight tolerances required
in sealless magnet-driven pumps, it’s inevitable that the slightest failure can cause significant
damage. Which is why Operation Protection is recommended for all applications in order to
stay alert to system-failure conditions, such as cavitation, low flow, dead heading, no flow, empty
suction vessel, and more. A variety of protection devices is available from Sundyne HMD Kontro
to ensure that its sealless pumps will last for years.
Operation Protection Devices
• Drive Motor Monitoring - PCM
A microprocessor-based, digital-load monitor protects against under-and-overload conditions
caused by dry running, low flow, cavitation or magnetic decoupling, etc.
• Pressure Containment Shell Surface Temperature Detection
RTD (PT 100) or thermocouple sensors, permanently located at the containment shell, monitor
temperature variations inside the magnetic coupling.
• Flow and Liquid Detection
Liquid-or-flow sensor mounted at the suction or discharge connection will: a) Prevent pump
start-up should the pump not be primed; or b) Stop the pump should the system be allowed
to run dry.

Sundyne HMD Kontro Operation Protection for Sealless Pumps
Operation Protection Devices (continued)
• Pressure Monitoring
A differential pressure switch is piped across the suction and discharge connections to monitor the performance
of the pump. Should the differential pressure across the pump change beyond the limits set in the device, either a
warning will be sounded and/or the pump will turn off in order to investigate the cause.
• Automatic Recirculation Control
Automatic recirculation valve installed at or near to the pump discharge connection, provides a permanent
by-pass during pump operation in the event of system flow fluctuations or closed discharge valve; will not protect
against dry running.
• Liquid Sensing Probe
This instrument is usually installed in conjunction with secondary control. It provides an early warning of contain-
ment shroud/shell failure before dangerous quantities of product can fill the coupling housing.
• Secondary Control
For some processes, the added benefit of secondary control is essential. Sundyne HMD Kontro is able to provide
pumps with secondary control devices to severely restrict any leakage in the immediate locality. Mechanical
devices are installed to the drive shaft assembly that are activated in the unlikely event of containment shroud/
shell failure. Together with the mechanical devices, the pump coupling housing is installed with gaskets to elimi-
nate any leakage across the joining faces.
• VapourView®
Non-Intrusive ‘Gas-in-Liquid’ Detector
Using an ultrasonic sensor, VapourView® highlights the presence of gas caused by entrapment or cavitation
within a process liquid, eliminating the risk of dry running and avoiding costly damage and downtime.

HMD Kontro Success Story
Success Story #1
An oil refinery experienced recurrent mechanical-pump seal leaks that were costly and risky. Fluidos Tecnicos
purposed the HMD Kontro GSP Frame 1 Sealless Pump as the safest and most economical replacement
option for the refinery’s old and damaged pumps. Pending installation and operation, the GSP pumps will
ensure significant reliability and safety, eliminating the refinery’s problematic seal leaks.
Success Story #2
At the time of start-up, a manufacturer of pump systems incurred a problem with a crude oil package (skid)
engineered for an offshore platform. The manufacturer reached out to Fluidos Tecnicos for help. Luckily,
the end-user was familiar with both the HMD Kontro brand and the quality of its pumps. After partnering
with both HMD Kontro Factory technical specialists and Stock Depot experts, FT recommended an
HPGSPV 30E DAG (75 Bar) due to its size and SPI compliance. The offshore pump system for crude oil
recirculation is now successfully up and running without any further problems.

From the Editor: On a positive note, I wish everyone a painless return to
the workplace after hopefully staying safe during the previous difficult months.
Unfortunately global industrial sales have suffered as a result of the pandemic. However,
on the upside the time is ripe to get going selling the impressive line of HMD Kontro equipment.
Most important, my hope is that you are now able to meet with customers
face to face to share the benefits of HMD Kontro Sealless Pumps,
especially the new CSA Pump. With that in mind, don’t forget
the Stock Depot’s extensive inventory that can immediately
be shipped, as well as referenced on the new Stock Depot
website.
Remember…Service Sells Pumps!
