An HMD Success Story
A refinery experienced ongoing reliability issues with one of its mechanically sealed, hot-oil-application
pumps. Upon review of the application, Holbrook & Associates realized the pump didn’t provide enough
pressure (NPSHA). The company recommended and installed a larger horse power HMD Kontro Sealless
pump to slow the RPMs, which allowed for a lower NPSHR.
The vexing issue was resolved via the superior, dependable, low-maintenance HMD Kontro Sealless Pump.
The refinery was so pleased with the reliability of the HMD Kontro pump, it purchased and populated
HMD Kontro sealless pumps throughout its plant! A promising customer became a fantastic one!

Technical Tip: Minimum Flow
There are three criteria to consider when evaluating minimum flow of a pump:
1] Minimum Thermal Flow
This is the flow rate at which liquid will vaporize in the casing or drive through the pump due to the waste
heat, raising the temperature of the product. It is more significant at low flow rates where the pump
efficiency is low, i.e. high heat input into a low mass flow rate.
2] Minimum Safe Flow (Mechanical)
This is the flow rate at which the axial or radial loads on the liquid end are such that they will overload
pump bearings and give rise in mechanical seal pumps to shaft deflection and subsequent failure of
mechanical seals. This is generally taken to be 10% of the BEP flow rate.
3] Minimum Safe Flow (Recirculation)
Recirculation is a potentially dangerous, damaging flow reversal at the suction or discharge of the impeller.
It is caused by an asymmetrical pressure field in the impeller that at low flows gives rise to pressure
gradient reversals and localized flow reversals. These flow reversals can give rise to significant vibration,
surging, cavitation, and the generation of vortices in suction pipe work that can cause damage to both
the pump and the pipe work.
