4. Purpose of Professional Development
All educational institutions have their area of strengths and areas of
weakness. It is important for us as educators to reflect on our own schools
to identify which components to improve. After looking at my school as a
whole, I identified areas that can be strengthened; I also developed options
that can be implemented to create change to support student
achievement. Including a professional development to foster change is
important: “Professional development aims to impact upon teacher
knowledge, teacher practice and thus change student outcomes”

5. Table: Connecting Issues to Domains
Issue and Concerns
● There is a need for additional preparation in
lieu of the issues that arose during the
pandemic. There should be options for
distance learning for extended time away
from school
● There is also a need for collaboration
between teachers to promote greater
student achievement
● Students are not ready for their current
curriculum due the gap that was widened
during distance learning.
Domains
Domain I: Fostering a Collaborative Culture to Support
Educator Development and Student Learning
Domain III: Promoting Professional Learning for
Continuous Improvement
Domain IV: Facilitating Improvement in Instruction and
Student Learning
Domain V: Promoting the Use of Assessment and Data
for School and District Improvement
Domain VI: Improving Outreach and Collaboration with
Families and Community
6. ISSUE: Lack of Collaboration
● State of emergency caused extended issues that require additional collaboration
● Collaboration should always be at the forefront within a school setting.
● It creates and opportunity for communication , different perspectives and alternative ideas to be
heard.
● Each educator or specialist can bring something new to the table (strategies, interventions etc)
Sharing knowledge can lead to the school’s main goal (student achievement).
Domain: I: Fostering a collaborative culture to support educator development and student learning
Domain III: Promote professional learning for continuous improvement

8. Loss of Knowledge and Retention
● Lower Rigor during distance learning (Pandemic)
● Created an achievement gap/student are unable to keep up in the next grade level
● Created a need for more intervention time
● Educators can identify needs through assessment
● Unpack standards to identify needed skills
● Offer reteaching opportunities
Domain V: Promote the use of assessment and data for school and district improvement
10. Additional Steps
● Communicate with students and
families more.
-Informing parents of 24 hour
tutoring service, after school
tutoring and learning labs will
provide students more time to learn
the intended outcomes.
-Inefficient communication from
the school to the home, can create
frustration and confusion.
Domain VI: Improving outreach and
collaboration with families and community
11. Concern and Outcomes
Issue and Concern
-Lack of collaboration in the
general education setting (core
subjects)
-Lack of collaboration between
grade levels
Outcomes
-Learners are unprepared for
the next grade level
-Lack foundational knowledge
from prior grade
12. Concern and Outcomes
Issue and Concern
-The gap that distance learning and
extended absences created
Outcomes
-Teacher lose time teaching current content
due to having to teach previous content or
loss content.
13. Collaboration in the School Solution
One solution to support student retention.
● Implement direct collaboration amongst school staff throughout the year.
● This could be done by creating benchmark collaboration meetings to discuss student
needs.
● Discussion could be based around what students need to know to be successful in the
following grade level.
For example: Students who transition to Integrated Math 1 at the high school must have
knowledge of how variable are used in equations from the previous class (Common Core
Math).
14. Student Retention
Student retention can be solved by implementing, strategies and utilizing resources that we already have. In
order for these intervention to work effectively we must promote communication amongst all stakeholders. On
way to improve student retentions is to improve communication with student families. Collaborating with
parents allows teachers to inform parents of interventions and develop a plan of action for struggling students.
Doing so will allow students to gain access to supports that are needed to regain content and skills. This
communication will support students during extended breaks, extended absences and state of emergency
situations
15. Barriers
● Educators are responsible for so many of things
● Push back from teachers
● Alignment of schedules
● Need for more staff
● Additional staff may cause a budget issue
16. Strategies
-Tutoring
-Learning Labs
-Co-teaching
-Online tutoring
-PAPER tutoring service
-Use online platform to
collaborate (google suites)
-Use same pacing guide
Additional Barriers
-Additional funds may be needed
-Intervention may impede on
other after school activities
-Additional time
Strategies and Barriers Chart
17. Action Plan -Discussion
Retention
Create a plan to
recognize struggling
learners, identify
skills and content
needed,
communicate with
stakeholders, and
implement
interventions.
Collaborate
The teams can meet to
create a common goal
for students, schedule
meetings throughout
the year, follow
through and recap
intended outcomes
Teacher Leaders
In order for the action
plan to work the
school must
encompass teacher
leaders. These teacher
are the people who
advocate for student
needs and foster
change. (School of
Education, 2022)
