2. Introduction
• April 11th will be our 1st Session for the
Academy.
• AM and PM sessions.
• Our 1st session will focus on the first three
“Hacks” in Hacking Leadership.
• We will look at each of the “Hacks” separately
during the session.
• Let’s briefly take a look at each one.
3. Present and Engaged
• As leaders, we need to invest in relationships
– Do whatever you can to get away from managing
• When you “manage” a building, you are not
an educational leader.
• When you build relationships, you:
– Show you care
– Show you want input from others to make the
building better
– Show you have an open ear for others
4. How to Be Present and Engaged
• The book discusses a number of ways:
– Listening;
– Greeting students and staff each day;
– Having lunch with students;
– Blog to be reflective of your practice;
– Visit classrooms daily;
– Celebrate wins using social media
5. How to be Present and Engaged
• Celebrate “wins” using social media
– I use Twitter and Facebook to let everyone know
about our accomplishments
• Classroom instruction and Relationship building
• Clubs and organizations doing great things
• Athletic accomplishments and awards (including
alumni)
• Respond to staff and parents timely
– Use my cell phone to respond to emails and text
messages
7. Benefits of being Present and Engaged
• “When you invest time in connecting with
members of constituent groups, you slowly
amass social capital and that social capital
becomes you “Get Out of Jail” card…”
• Build the relationships on trust and
confidence, not on being liked.
8. Create C.U.L.T.U.R.E.
• “As leaders, whether of the school or
classroom, we set the tone for the space.”
• What is the status of your school’s culture?
– Create a form and collect information.
– Use the questions in the book or see what other
schools offer for questions.
– Share with your staff, students, and parents.
– Have thick skin (you won’t like everything you see)
9. Find out What Your Students and Parents Think
• Share the same survey/poll with them or
create a different one.
– I have found the best results by making most of
the questions multiple choice and having a space
to share more at the end.
– Don’t make the survey/poll to long.
• Gather data regarding your CULTURE
10. Share the Culture with Communication
• Share your culture by using different means of
communication with your stakeholders
– Meet them where they are (If most of the parents
use Facebook, use FB the most to share)
• Educate your stakeholders by hosting nights to
educate them.
– We use Community University for our stakeholders
to learn about different topics
11. Social Media Pushback
• Be the model
– Model using social media correctly and to become
a better educator.
12. The Importance of Culture
• “When students are actively engaged in and have
ownership of their learning, chances are they will
perform well in all academic areas.”
• We see every student as an individual
– We value “Gray” areas.
– We don’t focus on control, we focus on changing
behavior.
• I model being a risk-taker and not being afraid of
failure
– We use the same mentality when we issue
consequences.
13. The Importance of Relationships
• The investment in building relationships is
time.
• Using a system to build relationships works.
– Create a schedule to visit classrooms.
– Write positive notes to staff members.
– Write positive notes to family of staff members.
– Target issues the right way (individually)
14. Little Things Make a Difference
• Find ways to make the year start of great (or
finish the year strong)
– Staff Party
• We purchase tickets for Columbus Clippers game and
have local restaurants donate for tailgate party.
– This year, I am going to provide “Care Package”
– Ditch the Staff Meeting
– This last quarter, we are doing “The Personal Day
Giveaway”
– Ask the staff for input on how you are doing
15. What’s Next?
• Read the first 3 “Hacks” in Hacking Leadership
• Complete the assignments in the Resource
document for the course (reading the other
articles and answering the questions over the
first 3 “Hacks”
• Challenge:
– Create a Flipboard account and Pinterest account
– Search Education and Education Leadership in both
– Create magazines in Flipboard and boards in Pinterest
over each topic.
– Collect at least 5 posts/pins in each topic
