Question 5 – how did you attract/address your target audience?
1. QUESTION 5 – HOW DID YOU
ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE
Bethan Tinker
2. CHARACTERS
Firstly, within these genres they all have a very
mysterious researcher, like in ‘The Conjuring’ they have
demonic possession hunters/researcher. We have a very
relatable character in our opening due to not only him
being very anonymous, as we don’t reveal his identity to
the end but also we can see the aim of his research as he
is surrounded by anti-Christ signs and also demonic
possession research. It is so enticing to see what he is
thinking, and also what the aim of all this research is.
Relating back to this genre of possession, we have got to
have some scary possessed people. This is very stereo-
typical for our genre. I think this worked very well with our
target audience, which is split between 50% teenage girls
and 50% teenage boys.
3. STRONG HORROR GENRE
We had a very strong horror genre by using
very stereotypical filming aesthetics, like our
dark lighting and gory scenes. We have used
mise-en-scene to make this happen by using
the dingy basement as a clear location. But
also surrounding the main character with
relevant research about our theme of the
movie. It makes a clear genre through the
opening.
4. IMPACT OF EDITING -
Juxtaposition
The pace within this piece changes between different scenes, so within
the possessed children's filming they make the pace very fast, and mood
very dark. However there is slower shots of the main character looking
up information and possession. This is to keep it all very tense.
Jump cuts are use during this, When we see all the possessed children's
face pop up this is a use of them. This creates shock and suspense
within the opening. Whether during the cutting rhythm in this opening,
there is long cuts which create tension as we are getting more into the
opening. We also used these cuts as they are a very simple technique
to keep the audience watching and entertained.
We also used the Ken Burns effect to fade different images in and out of
each other. I think this was highly effective in the fact it had the
appearance of a some sort flash back. Also to help the audience focus
on important aspects of the scene, we used it when blending demonic
possession symbols and anti-Christ signs.
5. AUDIENCE RESEARCH
Before we even started to plan our opening
we did a lot of target research and looked
into what our specific target audience would
want from it. We used Survey Monkey and
video interviews with our own specific
questions. From this we gained knowledge
about the content we needed to
include/change. We built our horror movie
around audience preferences therefore
making it more likely for people to watch it.
6. FROM OUR AUDIENCE RESEARCH
The information we gathered from our
audience research was quite varied by we
had clearly chosen a popular genre for
everyone. There was a mix between what
horror movies people liked, but was a clear
average of people enjoying watching ‘The
Conjuring’. This means that people were
more fond of hybrid movies like demonic
possession horror.
7. AUDIENCE ATTRACTION FOR THE FILM
I think with all of our techniques we have
managed to engross the audience, we have
created a clear horror genre techniques,
such as dark images, and tense music.
There is also a lot of ambiguity in this which
keeps the audience watching due to the
unanswered questions. Such as who is the
man and where is he going? I think this
makes our opening much more effective due
to the people wanting to watch the follow up
story.
