2. Audience research
During the research phase of our film we researched the different audience
types:
Mainstreamers
Individuals
Succeeders
Reformers
Aspirers
Our film is targeted at teenagers and young adults, so we created two surveys
on ‘Survey Monkey’ to gather information about these people. One survey was
about the audience, what they like to do, their favourite films etc.The other was
a survey asking people what they want to see in a thriller opening.
3. How did we use this
information?
Using the information we gathered about our
audience from the surveys. We then planned how
we would target this audience of teens and young
adults through our use of mise en scene,
camerawork, sound and editing.
4. Actors/Character
The actors we chose would have a big impact on attracting our target audience.
Our actors that we have chosen are two girls that play two sisters (Masie,
Annie). We decided that this would help with the audience relating with the
characters. Most people can understand the feeling of having siblings and the
responsibilities that follow.
5. Props
We decided that the key prop in our opening is the briefcase full of money.
Through our research of the ‘Mainstream’ population, money is a common item
that most people want, especially teenagers and young adults. We chose to use
this as our target audience could relate to the joy that the two sisters feel when
receiving this money. This concept of emotional investment into the film is how
we have tried to make our opening appeal to the audience.
6. Location
The location of our thriller opening is your average house along a street. A place
that hopefully all of our target audience are familiar with. This use of a common
location makes the opening seem realistic and involves the audience with the
opening as they can see themselves being that place.
7. Music
The incidental music we featured in the background was both eerie and
intense. The music was typical of a thriller movie and is to be expected
by the audience. This attracts thriller fans to see our opening, as it
follows basic sound conventions of a thriller movie.
The music that we featured leads up to key events in the movie. In our
research we found that most people had seen at least one thriller
movie, so using this type of music in the background we could control
the audiences emotions, which would make them engage with the film
and appeal to them.
8. Why is having a specific
audience important?
Having a specific audience is important as it allows companies, both
independent and conglomerate, to portray and represent certain
messages and themes to appeal to this audience.
If production and distribution is catered towards this specific audience
then it helps the companies make money as these people are more
likely to see the film and buy merchandise. These companies have put
research into what the audience likes and how they can appeal to them,
just the same as our group has.
