Types of Production Briefs
Contractual â âInvolves a signed agreement with stated objectives. If you or the other party were to
break any agreements you would be in breech of contract and could face legal actionâ
A contractual agreement is a contract with signed objectives, any break in the agreement by you or the
other party will be considered a breach of the contract and you or the party can face legal action. For a
contractual brief I could be creating a television advertisement going off strict designs and what the
company has told me they want.
I would get all the required information from different forms of communications such as emails, phone
calls and meetings. I would find out information such as there budget at what message they wanted to
give to the customers through the advert. I would need good time management skills in order to produce
the advertisement on time as being to late could be classed as a breech of the contract. I will need to use
my camera skills as well as being able to script and direct the advert as well as using skills I have gained in
using software such as adobe. Successfully completing the agreement could lead to you being
recommended by the company to others or even getting future work with the same company.
Negotiated â âTwo parties have differing ideas and a compromise has to be found that makes both sides
happy, sometimes involving a third party (An arbitrator)â
Negotiated: When two parties have different ideas and must come to a compromise that includes parts
of both of their ideas to make both parties happy sometimes this has to involve a third party to help with
the negotiations. If I was part of a negotiated brief I could be creating an advert while working with
another company and have merged our ideas together.
Similar to they way I would work in a contractual agreement although this would take more
communication skills as I would be working with another party in creating the advert. Time management
will be important because the other company will be relying on me doing my part of the deal so they can
finish thereâs, if I am doing all the filming then it will be need to be done on time so the other party can
start editing the advert together so the advert isnât late. Completing this job well and on time could get
me future work the other company I worked with if they ever got more work editing but needed the
filming done.
Informal â âMore of a verbal agreement between parties with nothing official or in writing, less formal
so to speakâ
Informal briefs are different from the other briefs because they are more of an agreement between two
or more parties but it is not done in writing or signed with nothing to official.Using an informal
production brief I could be selling a new product with only guidelines of what the company wanted and
what the company is selling.

When given the job to rebrand to sell a new Cadbury bar by creating a new radio advert to be aired
during lunch times. First off I would use my communication skills to do market research on what type of
people listen to the radio station at lunch time and at what age range, aswell as Cadburys current target
audience this would help me when creating the type of advert and what would be involved in the advert.
I would then use the information I have gathered and combine it with the skills I have in using a recording
studio to create the advert. This would help expand my career because if a good job is done I could get
more work from Cadburys or start being approached by other companyâs asking for me to work with
them as they have seen my work.
Tender ââThe production company might find out someone is looking for a video. They put together a
brief with a proposal and a budget and send it to the potential client. The client would look at all the
different tenders they receive and choose the one they prefer.â
A tender brief is when a media production company would find someone looking for product to be made
then they would but a small proposal and a rough budget estimate and send it to the client. The client
would then look through all the different tenders they would of received from different companies to see
which one they would prefer. If creating a tender brief I would put together a short brief with my ideas
and plans and how much the production would cost as well as locations and send it to the client.
When creating a tender brief for a music video I would use my communication skills to get hold of
different companies to hire equipment for creating the music video as well as hiring the staff to work on
the production. Then I would find out about the band I was creating the video for and look at their past
work then start looking at locations to match their style of music. Once I had found the location and
production costs I would put this together as well as a brief script and how long filming would take and
sent this off to the company. Completing this video to a high standard would help get my work shown
and would get me in touch with more companies and so giving me more work.
Co-operative brief ââ You work alongside other production companies or organisations who also have a
brief therefore your brief has to co-operate with the brief they are working on as wellâ
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Identify_the_different_types_of_briefs_used_in_the_media_industries
A co-ooperative brief is when companies work alongside other production companies who have a brief
and there companies must work alongside each other completing different tasks to get the finished
product. If I was creating a billboard for advertisement a co-ooperative brief would be good because you
could split the different tasks between different companies such as doing the market research from 1
company and a graphic design company using creating the billboard. I would communicate with the other
companies I am working with to sort out the tasks that need to be split between us so we could get the
job done as efficiently as possible, showing good time management skills so everyoneâs work is done so
that the other companies can start their work as soon as possible.

formal-â A formal written document containing specific and precise details about the goals that needs
to be achieved. The brief gets straight to the point and doesn't contain any unnecessary detail or
information. This type of brief is mainly aimed at a group of people or a business company rather than
individuals. A formal brief is not always a legal document.âhttp://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_formal_brief
A formal production brief would be a written document containing every detail and goal for the company
to complete. The brief would be precise and wouldnât include any unneeded information. These types of
briefs would usually be for big companies. A formal client brief would mainly be used by big
RadioCompanyâs when creating radio shows with specific aims and a target audience.
When given a formal brief for creating a radio show I first would use my communication skills to reach
out to the target audience and find out what they want followed by finding out the date the show will
need to be finished for. With my information on the target audience and the details given to me by the
brief I would then use my good time management skills to finish the show on time.
Commission-âThis is when a TV broadcaster, such as the BBC, employs an independent production
company to produce a program for their schedule.â
Commission briefs are used by big TV broadcasters who will employ or hire Production Companies to
produce programmes for them. For a commission brief I will be creating a Nature programme for the BBC
I will only have a certain amount of time and a tight budget to produce the show on time.
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_commission_brief
Competition-âLike a tender, the media firm will be in competition, however the main difference is
possibly that the brief might be a little less detailed, and it may be possible for many firms to enter
the competition rather than just a few.â
Similar to a tender brief a company will be facing other companies to get the job, although unlike a
tender it will be less detailed on what is asked for by the companies in the brief. For a competition brief I
will be against other companys in trying to design a new style of advert for a car company I have been
given very little details about what they want.
