4. China has been a multi-ethnic country since ancient
times. After the founding of the People's Republic of
China, there were 56 ethnic groups officially confirmed
by the central government.
Among them, the Han population has the largest

The characteristics of the distribution of various ethnic groups in
China are: large mixed living, small settlements, and intertwined
living. There are ethnic minorities living in the 56 ethnic Han areas,
and Han people living in ethnic minority areas. This pattern of
distribution is formed during the long-term historical development
process in which various ethnic groups interact. All provinces,
autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central
Government have ethnic minorities, and most county-level units have
more than two ethnic groups.
China's ethnic minorities are mainly distributed in Inner Mongolia,
Xinjiang, Ningxia, Guangxi, Tibet, Yunnan, Guizhou, Qinghai, Sichuan,
Gansu, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Jilin, Hunan, Hubei, Hainan, Taiwan
and other provinces and autonomous regions. The most ethnic
component of China is Yunnan Province, with 25 nationalities.

The Miao nationality is an ancient nation scattered throughout the world,
mainly distributed in China's provinces such as Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei,

14. Hui Minority-Chinese Muslims Outside Xinjiang
The Hui ethnic group is China's most widely distributed
ethnic minority who are distinguished mainly by being
ethnically Muslim. There is a sizeable population of 11
million in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in
northwestern China and in many cities and villages in the
provinces of Gansu, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Hebei, Henan,
Sichuan, Yunnan and Shandong.
