2. Definition of air pollution
Air pollution is basically harmful
chemicals in our atmosphere. Air
contains things like dust, gas, and fumes
air pollution occurs.
3. Examples and sources of air pollutant
• Air pollution occurs when contaminating agents are
released into the air.
• There are two types of air pollution, natural and man-
made. Natural causes of air pollution cannot be controlled,
nor do they happen often. The unnatural pollutants that
humans release into the air generate concern because of
the health problems they create and the massive damage
they inflict on the ozone and environment.
• The five common causes of air pollution come from daily
human activities and natural occurrences; some issues that
arise as a result of continuous air pollution are health
problems in humans, acid rain, a depleted ozone layer and
heavy smog.
4. THE EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION
No Air Pollutant Effect
1. Carbon Dioxide Greenhouse Effect
2. Nitrogen Dioxide /
Sulphur Dioxide
Acid Rain
3. Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) Depletion of ozone layer
5. Steps to prevent and control
• Save energy around the house.
• Manage your heating and cooling.
• Cut back on the amount of packaging you
purchase and the amount of household waste
you produce.
• Reduce the amount of time you spend in the
car.
• Improve your fuel economy.
6. Ways to keep the air clean
• Walk, bike, or take public transit.
• Use hand-powered garden tools. Avoid using
gasoline or diesel-powered equipment such as
lawnmowers and leaf-blowers.
• Reduce, reuse and recycle.
• Garden without pesticides. There are many
healthy and safe alternatives to harmful cosmetic
pesticides.
• Get involved. Support national and local efforts to
clean up the air. Contact your provincial lung
association and find out what is happening in your
area and how to get involved.
7. Practice habits of
keeping the air clean
• We can grow more trees.
• Higher chimneys helps the emission to be
released higher up in the atmosphere.
• Mining places should have more trees grown .
• Industries should be away from residential
areas.
• Railway tracks must be electrified.
