2. The poster follows the rule of three by using just three main colors
I.e. black, red and white. The color black connotes death or the end
of something. It creates a suspense foreshadowing something bad is
about to happen. The image fades in to the color black connoting the
character is in control of the evil. Red is the central color for horror
which connotes danger and blood. It creates fear of death. In the
poster it is used for the name of film which differs from the rest of
the text and colors used in the poster. The color makes it stand out
and grabs the attention of the audience as they look at it first. White
is used for the credits and the skyline of the poster. White is a
neutral color which stands out on the poster because of the plain
black background.
The image is put on a pitch black background which makes it stand out
more. The central image grabs the attention straight away because of the
plain black background. The mouth of the character fades in to the black
connoting the supernatural aspect of the film. The eyes are wide open
making it look more creepy and the character is making direct eye contact
with the audience which attracts the audience as it look like the image is
denoted towards them. There is little light on the characters face which
may suggest there is still some hope for the character to escape the evil.
The image in itself is distorted which connotes that the person has already
lost themselves to the spirits. The image connotes to the audience the plot
of the film.
The font used for the poster is plain and there is nothing dramatic about the
text. Even the title of the film is not written in bold but because it is in red it
makes it grab attention. The letter r however, is reflected in the name of the
film which connotes the title of the film itself. The text on the top above the
eyes of the character grabs the attention 'the hills have eyes'. This quickly
creates a sense of fear in the audience. The text compliments the eyes in the
poster suggesting watching someone is the key element. After the slogan of
the film large text is used for the date for the films release. The next thing
that will be noticed by the audience is the release date which is informative
for the audience but does not take away the attention from the poster itself.
The shot used is a close up shot of the character. The close up shot
puts emphasis on the facial expression of the character. This further
allows the audience to understand the character better and there
situation. The most expressive are the eyes in the poster which grab
the attention of the audience. The little lighting on the face from all
the darkness gives the audience a little hope that there is a solution
to the problem. The close up shot puts a sense of fear in the audience
giving it the sinister feel.
The layout of the poster is very simple as all the information is in one
place which makes it easier for the audience to understand it. All the
information is placed under the image which also does not take away
the attention from the main image. This is effective as they audience
would note the image first and then look at the credits and the
writings. This allows the audience to keep the concentration on the
main image while reading the credits. The image would grab the
attention immediately as it is very effective.
The characters eyes are open wide and her mouth blends with
the screen. The character is presented as daunting to the
audience through the use of lighting and the magnification of
the eyes. The image quickly connotes to the audience that the
character is evil or may be they are the one who is in trouble and
is possessed by the spirits.
3. The three main colors used in the poster are blue, white and grey. The
three colors give a gloomy effect to the poster. Dark colors may connote
the darkness in the film and the troubles it may cause. There is a little
bit of green because of the trees which are isolated. The dark gloomy
colors foreshadow the threat. For the text plain white is used as it makes
it stand out. The main color for text used is white including the title of
the film. White gives it sense of purity and makes it grab the attention of
the audience. The colors used in the poster are very simple. The color
used for the slogan is white as well which stands out from the
background. The use of color white connotes purity and a sense of
healing.
The main image in the poster is a house which is isolated as there
are no more houses around it. The isolation of the house may
suggest that there is something wrong with the house. On top of
the house the audience can clearly see a spirit which connotes that
the house is possessed by it. The spirit merges with the sky and is
very cloudy which makes it look like it appeared from the sky. The
clouds form a face with wide eyes and open mouth with sharp
teeth. The portray of the evil spirit is to suggest its creepy. The face
merges in to the top of the house and it looks like its holding on to
the house. The title of the film is placed on the road in front of the
house which does not take away the attention from the rest of the
poster.
The title of the film is placed at the bottom of the poster which is
right in front of the house. This allows the audience to read the
information provided whilst not losing their concentration from the
main image of the poster. The slogan is placed on top of the main
image which also does not take away the attention from the rest of
the poster as it is written in small text which is readable. The credits
are written in bold capitals in blue colour. The film certificate is at the
bottom left which is effective as it grabs the audience eye once they
have gone through the rest of the poster. The first letter and the last
letter of the name FRIGHT NIGHT cover the two words which
connotes a sense of constraint which foreshadows the possession of
the spirits on the house. The text is tightly clutched together with an
extended line of F and T which create a sense of entrapment in the
audience.
The camera angle shot used is a long shot of the house in the
middle of the road. This is effective as it connotes the isolation of
the house. This allows the audience to get more information about
the film. It suggests that the fright night is going to be in this
house. It also allows the audience to see the spirit that has
possessed the house.
4. The poster is very subtle and simple with just
one image of the eye and a hand coming out of
it. This connotes that there is something
happening with the eye of the character. This
immediately tells the audience that the film is
about visions or eye. What makes the poster
look more realistic is the 3d effect as it makes
the eye look very real. The eye is directly
looking at the camera which allows it to directly
address the audience. The audience may feel
intimidated by the stare from the eye. The veins
of the eye are lightly visible foreshadowing that
there is trouble coming in the future. In the first
impression the audience may feel overwhelmed
by the image as it looks directly at the camera
which makes it more realistic and scary at the
same time.
The font used for the poster is simple and bold. The
font for the eye is bold to emphasise that the main
focus of the film is the eye. On top of the title of the
film is the name of the director who has made the
film. This is significant as it gives more context to the
film about who has made it and if the director has
given good pictures in the past the established
audience will also go and watch this film. The text is
for the name of the director is small so it does not
take away the attention from the main image and the
title of the film.
REPRESENTATION
The eye is represented as if the person is in agony
and pain. The color of the eye is different to that of a
normal eye which makes it stand out and represents
that the person is maybe threatened and troubled by
something. The plain white background that the eye
is on makes the expression of the eye stand out
more and represent the trouble. The hand coming
out of the eye gives it a more realistic feel and it also
represents that someone might be longing for help
or they might be trapped inside their own visions.
LAYOUT/COMPOSITION
The poster layout is very simple and thus
attractive. The colors used in the poster are very
neutral such as white which represents purity. The
whole poster is based on a plain white background
which makes the eye stand out making the
audience focus on the eye. The eye straight away
grabs the attention of the audience. The second to
it is the title of the film in which the 'eye' is
boldened which puts an emphasis on the
importance of the eye in the film. This
foreshadows that the movie will be about visions.
COLOR
The poster follows the rule of three as the three main colors
used are white, brown and black. All the colors used are
neutral which makes the poster simple and attractive at the
same time. The color brown of the eyeball grabs the attention
as the white background makes it stand out.
5. IMAGE
The image of the poster is very provoking as it looks
like a collage of different still shots from the film. The
face of the character is blended in the image.
Particularly, the face and the mouth is blended and is
black which represents that the person is disturbed.
The image in the first look catches the eye because of
the use of a close up shot and the color scheme that
the poster follows. The face is not made clear as to
who it actually is which creates ambiguity for the
audience. The image abides by the codes and
conventions of horror by the use of dark colors. The
face is shattered which connotes the disruption in the
person's life.
LAYOUT/COMPOSITION
The Layout of the poster looks like a collage of
different shots. It consists of square images from
the film. The colors used for the poster are very
dark mostly black. It connotes the darkness that
the character might have in their life in the film.
The text is placed on the right hand side corner. The
title of the film is written in big text to make it
stand out to the audience. The title of the film is
also shadowed and the color scheme is similar to
that of the face on the poster. The main colors are
white and black which make the poster easy to
understand and attractive at the same time.
FONT TYPE
The font used for the poster is very simple and
curvy which makes it easy to understand for
the audience and appeal at the same time.
The plain white color is used for both the one
liner and the title of the film which makes
abide to the rule of three. The first and the
last letter of the title stand out as they are
slightly bigger than the rest. This emphasises
the title of the film, and does not take away
the attention from the main image of the
poster.
REPRESENTATION
The character represented in the poster
looks like a female character which connotes
her as being in damsel in distress. This is
because of the shattered image of the face.
Although, it is a bit confusing as to who the
character actually is, the audience can still
identify that it somehow looks like a female.
The background is black and the hair of the
character merges with it making it
ambiguous as to who it actually is.
