2. The foundation of Balmer Lawrie (BL) is r o o t e d
in diversity and in any event, the Company has drawn
its strength from this diversity. The diverse nature of its
businesses reinforced by its presence in several g e o g r a p h i e s
distinguishes our Company from others. We have our units /
establishments spread across the states and union territories. We
also have Joint Venture companies in UAE and Indonesia. Though we have an
intrapreneurial culture, you would agree that it is not possible for an employee to
experience BL in its totality in his / her entire service life in the Company. Hence,
time and again, through our various in-house communication media, we try to bring
slices of BL into the life of an employee. This issue of Balmer Lawrie Organisational
Gazette (BLOG) is focused on the Logistics Business of the Company and features its
key activities, people and achievements. The Logistics Business comprises of Logistics
Services (LS), Logistics Infrastructure (LI) and Cold Chain (CC) and all the three
business units have emerged as committed performers ensuring business continuity
even in the most difficult of situations during the pandemic.
A very interesting quote by Thomas J. Peters, the American writer on business
management practices, wonderfully articulates the importance of Logistics and its
relevance - “Leaders win through logistics. Vision, sure. Strategy, yes. But when you
go to war, you need to have both toilet paper and bullets at the right place at the
right time. In other words, you must win through superior logistics.” Today, with
remarkable growth in E-commerce and hyper local delivery, the need for effective
logistics and supply chain management is not restricted to institutions alone but is
having a strong impact on the life of the common man on a day to day basis. Logistics
is a sector that not only nations and businesses but even you and I can’t choose to
ignore. It’s a sector that is contributing immensely to growth and development in our
country, and eventually making a significant difference in every facet of our lives.
I would like to thank Mr. Adhip Nath Palchaudhuri, Director [Service Business] for
his valuable guidance, and Mr. Sushil Dugar, Head [Sales & Marketing]-LS and Mr.
Vikas Pednekar, Sr. Manager [Design], T&V for their immense support in bringing
out this issue.
Hope you will enjoy reading this issue of BLOG. As always do send your suggestions /
feedback to me at mukhopadhyay.mohar@balmerlawrie.com. Also, please send your

3. ISSUE 35, July 2021 3
I feel happy that in the current scenario we have been able to bounce back and
are more in control of things as far as our businesses are concerned compared to
the previous year. While the COVID-19 pandemic was unspooling, we had no
choice but to wait and watch and ask ourselves how bad it could get. We braved all
odds and today after fighting the second wave, the Company was able to make profits in Q1 of this financial
year. This issue of BLOG is centred on our Logistics business, which has been our bottomline driver, and I
believe it has the potential to significantly add to our revenues as well. Overall, the Logistics business also
witnessed an increase in profits by around 25% in Q1 of FY 2021-22 as compared to the same period last
year. The Services businesses of Balmer Lawrie in particular, which includes Logistics and Travel & Vacations
were impacted severely because of the challenging market conditions during the lockdown. We had to ensure
business continuity owing to our commitment to various customers and I am very happy to state that the
Logistics Infrastructure and the Logistics Services teams went beyond the call of duty to service customers
during the lockdown and proposed alternate solutions for cargo movement, which was highly appreciated. Our
Container Freight Stations (CFS), Integrated Check Posts (ICP) and some other units were up and running
every day following all necessary COVID-19 protocols. Even now, all COVID-19 SOPs are being stringently
followed at our CFSs, Warehouses, Cold Chain Units and Temperature Controlled Vehicles, the ICPs, the
Multi Modal Logistics Hub and all the Logistics Services offices pan India. I am very proud that Cold Chain
Unit at Hyderabad is continuing to do a stupendous job in handling Covaxin as the sole storage and logistics
partner of Bharat Biotech. They have started handling the Sputnik vaccine in India for Dr. Reddy’s and I hope,
the team will clinch more such deals and cater to esteemed customers.
We took a strategic decision of forming the new Logistics Business Unit SBU: Cold Chain to strengthen our
presence in the Cold Chain Logistics segment and promote brand LOGICOLD as a one stop shop solutions
provider in this domain. I am happy that we have expanded in the Cold Chain space as per our plans. Our
Cold Chain Units at Rai, Hyderabad and Patalganga (Navi Mumbai) are fully operational though we need to
aggressively market our services and ensure full capacity utilisation. The Cold Chain Unit at the Multi Modal
Logistics Hub in Visakhapatnam is a valuable add-on to our best in class asset base. The new Cold Chain Unit
set up at Bhubaneswar will be commissioned by the end of this year. Our Cold Chain Units are supported
by our own fleet of Temperature Controlled Vehicles (TCVs) and are continuously working out innovative
options for customers.
What makes Balmer Lawrie unique is that it is an organised player and a partner of choice for Importers,
Exporters, Shipping Lines, CHAs, Freight Forwarders etc. as we have a combination of factors like diversified
service range backed by assets, pan-India presence, technology-led customer connect, knowledgeable resources
that have kept the SBU profitable even in the face of significant crisis inflicted to the economy by the pandemic.
Logistics Services is working on increasing its private customer base. However, we have to leverage technology
to be more sustainable and cost effective while we ensure time bound last mile delivery.
The logistics market in India is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 10.5% between 2019 and 2025. Increasing
investments and trade points toward a healthy outlook for the Indian freight sector as well. The industry is
poised to grow and hence, the opportunities for organised players like us are immense. I would urge all the
three business units - Logistics Services, Logistics Infrastructure and Cold Chain - to leverage each other’s
strengths to achieve customer delight and focus on enhancing our customer base to drive growth and increase
profits margins. We will continue to invest in the Logistics business. I’m confident that we will be able to
enhance efficiency and quality of our services and business processes to address the market dynamics and
improve the health of our bottomline over the rest of this financial year. My best wishes to all of you!

I am glad that this issue of BLOG is dedicated to the Logistics Businesses of the Company,
especially when we have formed the new Strategic Business Unit (SBU) - Cold Chain and
launched the LOGICOLD brand to enhance our presence in the Cold Chain Logistics space,
and also have taken strategic decisions to further sharpen the focus by making structural
changes in the Infrastructure and Services Business Units. As Director [Service Business],
I oversee all the three SBUs: Logistics Services (LS), Logistics Infrastructure (LI) and Cold Chain (CC) and it has been
our constant endeavour to provide end to end logistics solutions to our customers and establish our presence across the
entire logistics value chain. The evolving Logistics landscape comprises numerous activities and players and is a complex
network of partnerships and handoffs. As a leading player, we have to leverage this complexity to facilitate the supply
of the right product, at the right time, at the right place, for a right cost in the right condition. Our customers could be
looking for domestic or international freight movement, for containerised storage or destuffed and bonded, for ambient
storage or temperature controlled – and permutations and combinations thereof. Thus, it is extremely important that LS,
LI and CC synergise their capabilities and provide a unified customer experience for us to claim our right to win in this
competitive but exploding business landscape.
The Indian Logistics sector currently valued at USD 150 billion, is an integral part of India’s GDP and is expected to
become worth USD 215 billion in the next couple of years. In India, the demand for today and the future is integrated
end-to-end Logistics solutions. This would encompass integrated infrastructure / assets platform, integrated services
platform and integrated digital platform. There is a wide spectrum of players in the domain ranging from start-ups, the
very small transporters and fleet owners, to small and medium-sized freight forwarders and MNCs. Hence, the sector
would continue to witness consolidation, process standardisation, technological upgradation and digital transformations
for more agility, and integration not only between modes of transportation but also the users and third party service
providers. Emergence of third-party (3PL) and fourth-party (4PL) logistics service providers would address complex
supply chain challenges and the ability to manage information along with the physical will set apart a quality logistics
player. There would be further development of Multimodal Logistics Parks (MMLPs), streamlined economic corridor
routes for efficient freight movement, evolution of inland waterways and coastal shipping with the objective of Greening
of Supply Chain. Large logistics players would focus on using sustainable and environment friendly infrastructure for
e.g. electric trucks and low carbon fleet of vehicles for last mile delivery. India has inadequate infrastructure to preserve
its farm produces and Cold Chain Logistics is poised to grow and we are currently also witnessing the contribution of
the sector in the COVID-19 vaccine supply chain. Integrated cold chain and preservation infrastructure facilities using
high-end technology, without any break, from the farm gate to the consumer would continue to grow. Strong growth
supported by government reforms, transportation sector development plans, growing retail sales and the E-commerce
sector are likely to be the key drivers of the logistics industry in India in next few years. The National Logistics Policy by
the Government of India would facilitate seamless movement of goods across the country. Effective implementation of
the policy would help provide an impetus to trade, enhance export competitiveness, and improve India’s ranking in the
Logistics Performance Index. With opportunities galore and a business environment filled with hope, there’s no looking
back for our country and the Logistics sector in the near future.
Balmer Lawrie is a leading player in the organised sector and with our state-of-the-art asset base and trained manpower,
we are well equipped to sustain our position as leaders in the logistics industry. The various awards and accolades that we
have won in the recent past - CII Cold Chain Award, ET NOW SCM Championship etc. - are testimonies to our success in
delivering best-in-class services to our customers. We have also leveraged technology to stay ahead of competition. Since
pioneering the usage of RFID facility in our Container Freight Stations, we have constantly kept refreshing our technology
platforms to provide facilities such as freight tracking, online payments etc. In our Cold Chain Units, we have the Warehouse
Management System and customers can track the movement of cargo real time in our Temperature Controlled Vehicles.
However, we have to keep innovating and focus on enhancing customer experience at every point in time.
Our preparedness for the future is important. In Logistics Services we have to build trade lane specific capabilities to
scale up across other industry segments and commodities and also build our IT capabilities around route planning, real
time monitoring and execution. We will continue to invest in setting up strategic assets to strengthen our presence and
provide the customers a pan-India storage solution network. We will continue to heavily invest in technology initiatives
and explore opportunities for process improvement using digital across all Logistics businesses. The Board of Directors
will continue to be solidly behind all the three SBUs in their pursuit of growth and take advantage of the evolving
opportunities in this space.
I wish the teams luck in their efforts to continuously better themselves. It’s time to roll up your sleeves, fuel your passion,
deliver your best and take competition head on! Success will anyway follow!

5. Without Logistics the world stops and I can rightfully say that without our Logistics
businesses, Balmer Lawrie stops! As this issue of BLOG is focussing on the Logistics
businesses, I will share some thoughts on the changing landscape and the immense
impact technology has had on this domain in the recent times, and how we have to
adopt and adapt to emerging technology trends to sustain and survive.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought significant changes in the corporate landscape and have compelled
companies and individuals to reinvent themselves to remain relevant. This applies to the Logistics industry as
well. Traditionally the industry was pretty unorganised until 5 to 6 years ago but now is witnessing a significant
shift towards digitisation and contactless operations. On the demand side, many customers that otherwise
operated offline went online. There is a strong focus on the entire supply chain of doorstep delivery. Biggies like
Amazon have transformed the life of a common man unimaginably through smart logistics. Guaranteed free
and ultrafast doorstep delivery of essentials and grocery at incredible prices through the Amazon Prime and
Amazon Fresh networks is an exemplary lifting of the bar of expectation and experience. Logistics is touching
the lives of a wide spectrum of customers spread across the institutional and retail segments and the future will
witness transformations undreamt of!
New age technology has revolutionised the Logistics sector by being a key differentiator. As per World
Economic Forum, Digital transformation of the Logistics sector could translate into value of USD 1.5 trillion
for the participants and an additional USD 2.4 trillion worth of societal benefits by 2025. Logistics start-
ups will be leveraging technology to provide smart solutions and disrupt the traditional way of operating.
Internet of Things (IoT), Automation technology, Blockchain technology, Cloud Computing, Advanced / Big
Data Analysis, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics will be leveraged by market leaders in this domain
to provide end-to-end lean and smart logistics solutions, enhance quality, reduce cost and minimise human
intervention. Driverless vehicles, wearable devices, warehouse digitization / automation will help achieve
operational efficiencies to counter supply-chain cost pressures in the industry. The industry will continue to
witness fast paced technology disruptions resulting in real time supply chain visibility. The future of logistics
will be very interesting. We can imagine a situation in the near future when we place an order for a product
and 30 minutes later a drone drops it off right outside our door. The future would see self-driven vehicles and
drones that would automatically choose the most efficient route to drop the cargo. Transitioning to ‘smart
transportation’ will help in providing more cost-effective solutions.
Balmer Lawrie has been a pioneer in adopting technology to track containers / freight in its Container Freight
Stations pan India on a real time basis and streamline supply chain operations. Our Logistics Services Business
Unit uses a Freight Tracking System to track any shipment from the beginning till it is delivered to the customer.
Our Cold Chain units use a web-based Warehouse Management System (WMS) powered by very high SLA
for availability and low downtime as an essential feature. Batch, Expiry and First Expired First Out (FEFO)
controls are provided through WMS. Our Temperature Controlled Vehicles are GPS enabled for real time
tracking and has a real time temperature monitoring system. However, we have to gear up for a future where
we use AI and Big Data to do automated scheduling, volume planning etc. via predictive analytics and may also
have to use the data from truck operations to enhance our operational efficiency.
While infrastructure readiness and technology are expected to be the key drivers of growth for the Indian
logistics industry, a number of trends will drive this growth and all will involve the adoption of technology for
tactical and operational decision making, routing, fleet optimisation, data analysis or strategic cargo / shipment
handling. Sustainability and environment protection is something we just cannot ignore. The country will
have to enact enabling policies to drive investment in technology to provide end-to-end lean, clean and smart
logistics solutions, thus enhancing quality, reducing cost and minimising human intervention. According to
the recently released report of NITI Aayog and Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), titled ‘Fast Tracking Freight
in India: A Roadmap for Clean and Cost-Effective Goods Transport’, India can save Rs 3.11 lakh crore worth of
fuel by 2050 and reduce 10 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide by 2030 by deploying a clean and cost-effective mode
of goods transportation. I hope that Balmer Lawrie will play its role in the evolving Logistics landscape of the
country. My best wishes to the Logistics Infrastructure, Logistics Services and Cold Chain business units!

In view of the extraordinary crisis situation arising due to havoc created by the COVID-19 2nd wave and
shortage of availability of oxygen across India, it was decided that each Oil PSU under the administrative
control of MOPNG would set up Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen Plant of adequate capacity at
identified hospitals in different states as per the directive of the Health Ministry. Each of the Oil PSUs is
responsible for commissioning of the PSA Plant. Balmer Lawrie has been entrusted with the responsibility
to install plants in 05 Locations in the state of Karnataka. In the current year CSR activities of PSEs are
focused more on oxygen plant installation, oxygen cylinders and oxygen concentrator distribution,
vaccination drives and distribution of mask and sanitizers to communities. Balmer Lawrie sponsored the

9. The Logistics industry is growing in leaps and bounds and integrated logistics solutions is the way forward for
the Company. We spoke to Mr. Manas Kumar Ganguly, COO [Cold Chain], Mr. Udyan Ghosh, COO [Logistics
Services] and Mr. Romon S Louis, COO [Logistics Infrastructure] to understand their success mantra.
Tête-à-tête with SBU Leaders
Manas Kumar Ganguly Udyan Ghosh Romon S Louis
‘Integrated Logistics Solutions is the way forward for the Company’. What is your success
mantra?
COO[ColdChain]: WeareoneoftheveryfewcompaniesinIndiatohavesuchawideandlargepresencein
the Logistics domain. Starting from Container Freight Stations, state-of-the-art Warehouses, Custom Bonded
facilities, own trailers, Cold Chain Units as well as refrigerated vehicles for servicing different segments of the
industry along with a robust pan India Freight Forwarding and Logistics Services operation. The key strength
of Balmer Lawrie (BL) is the experience and knowledge of the team in this domain. Let’s take a look at some of
the most important advantages to having an integrated supply chain:
• Increased collaboration and visibility
• Stay on top of demand
• Flexibility as per customer demand
• Increase the topline with one window solution
• Eliminate waste of time and reduce the cost of operation
• Higher returns to the shareholders
The Logistics landscape has been witnessing changes and the model of SCM has also been changing. The
pandemic hit us hard but changed the pace of the IT evolution in SCM process and procedures. E-Bill of
Lading, E-Bill of Entry / Shipping Bill filing, Block Chain activities etc. are no more in the books, but are
already getting implemented by the different Shipping Lines / Airlines along with many Ports / Airports. The
most important success mantra is to work hard as per the demands of the industry, get completely geared
for IT based operations and be resilient to the changing times. We must make ourselves ready to accept
those changes, be focussed and get trained in order to take up the future challenges backed by our rock-solid
foundation, customer support and operational excellence.
COO[LS]:IntegratedLogisticsSolutionsisatermthathasbeentossedaroundinrecenttimes,whichencompasses
a variety of end-to-end logistics related services like air, ocean, road and rail transportation, warehousing and
other value-added services that make up a total logistics services package. Balmer Lawrie provides a gamut of
services under the broad spectrum of Logistics which include freight forwarding activity both air and ocean,
Customs House Agency service, Warehousing, Cold Chain, CFS activity, Projects Logistics etc. The new success
mantra is the power of integration of these services, which shall enable the Company to deliver superior customer
response and contribute towards a successful supply chain management for its customers.
COO [LI]: The entire paradigm of the Logistics sector has been witnessing a change due to digitization
and the thrust is more on offering improved and cost-effective solutions for the end customer and thereby
ISSUE 35, July 2021 9
10. drive customer satisfaction. On account of involvement of multiple service providers at different stages of the
shipment process, it was quite difficult for the customer to have regular / real time updates on the progress of
their shipment. This exposed them to higher amount of risk and loss of revenues due to delay in shipments.
So as to counter the aforesaid factors and related challenges, offering Integrated Logistics solutions to the
customers can enable the Company to pitch for the customer’s need for end-to-end logistics solutions ranging
from Freight, Transportation, CFS services, Clearance, Warehousing etc. for all their logistics needs, which
could be customized as per customer’s requirement and would be quite cost-effective. These services would
involve effective use of all transportation modes like air, rail, road and sea and would improve reliability,
flexibility, capacity and safety as compared to operating each mode independently. These services would help
to boost the productivity of different services and delivery at final destination all under ‘ONE’ roof. With
Balmer Lawrie’s strong presence in Freight Forwarding, Cold Chain and CFS businesses, the customers can
be offered one stop solution for all their requirements and contribute to improving their profitability. While
working on the Integrated Logistics Solutions, we should aim to target to get into e-freight industry, which
is going to be an extension of Integrated Logistics solutions driven by technology. The success in Integrated
Logistics solutions lies in improving the customer’s experience as a whole rather than service selling, building
sustainable partnerships with customers, sharing best practices in services, differentiating services from
competitors by leveraging IT services and technology.
In the coming years, customer experience and not just cost and service levels will determine
success for business in any sector. How do you think Balmer Lawrie is leveraging its services
and infrastructure in enhancing customer experience?
COO[LS]:Theworldofbusinesshasmovedfromlowcostmodelstocustomerexperiencemodels.Customers
live in a world with 24/7 access to almost anything and have many more options than ever before. This leaves
companies eagerly vying for their attention hoping to stand out in a crowded market place by providing a
superior customer performance. Customer expectations of highly personalized experiences continue to evolve
daily. Many are quick to go elsewhere if they don’t receive the desired experience. As a result, organizations are
investing record amounts in enhancing the customer experience. Analysts predict that over the next five years
customer experience will overtake price and product as the number one brand differentiator. We too at Balmer
Lawrie have aligned to the changed customer dynamics and very recently we could delight one of our leading
customers with timely logistics movement of over dimensional defense cargo followed by hook point delivery
to the vessel within a very short period. Balmer Lawrie is focusing on leveraging the unique capability which
we have – Logistics Infrastructure, Cold Chain and Logistics Services under Logistics. This unique capability is
used as a point of differentiation vis-a-vis our competitors. Our team acts as a consultant offering the customer
a solution rather than selling.
How are the Container Freight Stations, Warehouses, MMLPs and ICPs collaborating with
the Logistics Services team to offer cost-effective and operationally efficient solutions?
COO [LI]: There is a regular and ongoing interaction between the team members of CFSs, MMLP and ICP
with the team of Logistics Services based out of different locations to explore the opportunities in offering a
one stop solution for the logistics needs of the customers. In all the CFSs, the movements booked by different
branches of Logistics Services are being shared among the team members of CFSs so as to secure nomination
of containers to the respective CFS by offering the cost-effective solutions in terms of CFS services. Further
to this, the different needs of consignees in terms of local transportation, warehousing needs are being shared
among the team members so as to offer integrated logistics solutions to the end customer. Going forward,
it is intended to develop a core team involving key members of both Logistics Services, Cold Chain as well
as Logistics Infrastructure so as to actively promote our combined services to customers as a value-added
proposition for mutual gains.

11. Balmer Lawrie is all geared up to strengthen its foothold in the Cold Chain Logistics
business. While advances in software and technology are promoting better cold chain
integration, safety of products and plugging various supply chain gaps remain critical
in enhancing efficiency. How is SBU: Cold Chain addressing these factors? How are the
LOGICOLD units and vehicles collaborating with the Logistics Services team to offer one-
stop experience for the customers?
COO [Cold Chain]:We have created a brand for Cold Chain Solutions, LOGICOLD. We have state-of-the-
art facilities at four places (Hyderabad, Rai - NCR, Patalganga - Navi Mumbai and Bhubaneswar) in India. We
can manage cargo in temperatures from -25 degree to +28 degree Celcius. We also have blast freezing facility at
Patalganga. The logistics landscape can be successful only within a collaborative framework, with customers,
suppliers, service providers and all other partners working from shared data to, say, allocate warehouse space
or get relevant supply ready on time. The harmonious flow of data across the supply chain stakeholders
helps them take timely, informed decisions. The end-to-end visibility provides the landscape a holistic view,
operational capabilities and establishes the entire supply chain’s supremacy in the market, increasing their
productivity and risk management ability.
We have very good WMS application running in our Cold Chain Units. We are also maintaining a log book in
all the Units for our vehicles and dedicated personnel to monitor the same regularly. SBU: Cold Chain is putting
in efforts to automate its operations through Bar Code technology and by reducing manual interventions as
far as possible. We are capturing FEFO (First Expiry First Out) in our MIS reports. The Bar Code Technology
will allow us to do the value-added services like packing, repacking, wrapping, part handling etc. in much
easier and faster way, reducing manual errors. The Bar Code Technology will be integrated with our WMS and
we can integrate the same with our other application in services or in infrastructure. We are looking into the
options for integrating our GPS Tracking System and Temperature Monitoring system of our vehicles with Bar
Coding application so that we can provide seamless service to our customers.
Integrated solutions is every logistics player’s dream come true, with comprehensive functionalities covered by
the solution - from transportation management to warehouse management. All operational entities are linked
to each other, achieving optimal efficiencies not just internally but also across the supply chain. Thus, with
extensive options to customize and scale up, integrated solutions are indeed the ideal option. Basic operational
visibility is a fundamental element of a healthy logistics landscape. Achieving this visibility requires efficient
management of data. The ability of making the same data available to every stakeholder of the landscape in real
time is essential for seamless operation of the entire network since different aspects of the same data are used
uniquely by different stakeholders. This seamless operational visibility can be achieved only through a strongly
integrated logistics solution that simplifies exchange of business intelligence across teams.
Our aim is to provide integrated logistics solutions to easily meet the needs of every small and medium
enterprise for an end-to-end functionality and affordability by incorporating all the core modules in logistics
into one seamless solution. This unique combination prioritizes efficiency and accuracy through intelligent
use of cognitive technology. Additionally, along with our Logistics Services team establishing a hybrid offering

12. Balmer Lawrie Logistics Services (LS) team is a solution-oriented team. The
motto is to assume the ownership of the cargo and Take Care of delivering the
cargo in the best of its condition. The team leaves no stone unturned until the
solution is found or the problem is fixed for clients. As a team, SBU: LS doesn’t
just solve problems, but also helps to identify the source of the challenge and
provide the right way of doing things.
SBU: LS of Balmer Lawrie has been a key arm of the organisation. Many important and critical shipments have been
handled by our predecessors, and we continue to endeavor to uphold the long-standing legacy. Some of our clients don’t
call us vendors, but rather partners when they refer to us. We take care of our clients, we take care of their cargo, we take
care of our deliverables and most importantly, we take care of
the values and principles of Balmer Lawrie.
The entire cumulative experience of the Logistics Services team
is over 1200 years. The experience and cognitive capabilities
have enabled this SBU to become consultants to our clients.
Whenever the clients are in a fix, they come to us and this team
always goes the extra mile to provide them with the best possible
solutions. Be it the business development team, or the operations
team, the center of focus is our clientele. The SBU is a client and
solution-oriented team. During the pandemic, we were the only
freight forwarding team that was working from office. While
all shipping lines, airlines, NVOCCs, freight forwarders were
working from home, our team members came to office daily, to
ensure seamless solutions for our clients in very trying teams.

13. Significant Achievement
SBU: LS has been handling unique and prestigious charters / shipments for esteemed customers. The SBU is a
member with the WCA Network and got registered in JC Trans network for increasing its associate presence
and also registered in Overseas Project Cargo Association for increasing its foothold in Project logistics. LS also
became a life member of the prestigious Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport [CILT] and has continued
to be a member of IATA, FFFAI, AMTOI and ACAI. More than 1320 new customers have been added over the
last 3 years. Specialised Sales Training programs on ‘Remote Sales’ and ‘Basics of Sales’ through movie-based
online programs were organised for the entire Sales Team of LS in its pursuit of excellence through continuous
training of the human resources available.
A Government client was badly stuck into a shipment from Ukraine to Russia. Due to the embargo in place, no
cargo could move from Ukraine to Russia. The cargo in question, was required for use in Russia by the client
for upgrading their product and had to be imported into India after the product was upgraded. As a policy, LS
team makes it a point to keep meeting customers regularly and in one of such meetings, the client informed the
team of its predicament, and the team put together their cognitive abilities to think of an out-of-box solution.
LS organised a 3rd country, Ocean Break Bulk shipment, and moved the cargo from Ukraine to Dubai Free
Trade Zone. Here, we undertook certain key value addition activities, and organised crucial documentation
that enabled the shipper to move the cargo into Russia, without any further hindrances. After completing these
activities, the cargo was moved from Dubai Free Trade Zone to Russia. Throughout the whole operation, we
maintained extreme confidentiality to ensure that no information pertaining to the cargo or the shipment
gets leaked. In this shipment, not only did we act as the logistics partner of our client, but also as logistics
consultants. Based on this seamless service delivery, we got the second lot of the shipment as well.
Not only for Government clients, but we are also the go-to Logistics Partner for many private organisations
as well. A certain client needed to move a cargo from India to Russia by an Air Charter. It was difficult for
the Aircraft to go to the location wherein the cargo was located. The LS team gave the client a solution which
involved moving the cargo to Mumbai, and then export the cargo from there. We assisted the client in moving
the shipment from their premises to Mumbai. We organised a proper aircraft that was capable to carry the
cargo. The whole craft was chartered by us, and we organised all the proper documentation for the client. And
finally, they were able to move the cargo to Russia and we also took over the management of the cargo and
through our effective associates’ network, we moved the cargo from the Russian airport to the premises of the
consignee. In this shipment, not only were we the best priced option, we were also the best service option.
It is said that business is only about earning money. But Logistics Services think differently. They are focused
towards taking care of clients and their cargo by taking ownership. And this in turn, helps us grow in our
business. A certain client needed to move 28000 oxygen concentrators from China to India, at the peak of
the COVID-19 pandemic. A multinational freight forwarder was involved in a similar shipment but was not
able to deliver the service level that was needed. The client, came out with a tender, wherein 21 global freight
forwarding companies participated. Our price negotiation prowess enabled us to win the tender by beating all
the participating freight forwarders.
Post winning the shipment, we gave an out-of-the-box solution to the client. Instead of bringing in the whole
cargo together, we split the cargo into multiple lots, and started moving the cargo under our Air Import
Consol and delivered the cargo well before the scheduled delivery period prompting the client to give us an
appreciation award. Our solution reduced the shipment cost drastically, and we passed on the price economies
to our client. These oxygen concentrators were being imported to help our fellow citizens fight and win against
COVID-19. Unlike traditional business houses, we did not focus on filling up our pockets, but rather passed
on the costing benefits to our client, who in turn was able to pass on the same to other stakeholders, fighting
the pandemic in our country. We as a team, not only take care of our business, we also take care of our
denizens.
Our client needed to move in some cargo from Europe to India. Traditionally, this cargo was always moved
as a break bulk shipment, and thus, the shipment cost was always very high. And this is where our team came
in. We gave the client a solution, wherein we would move their break bulk cargo from the same origin port
to the same Indian port, but through liner vessels. This is something that was never thought of and done
earlier. Thanks to this solution, the ocean freight cost for our client fell drastically, and the client was able to

/ unloading / storing cargo and the charge levied by the dock owner for space and handling the cargo. The
charge is usually included in the base freight rate or the Terminal Handling Charge). The client executed the
shipment at the lowest cost ever. Post this shipment, this service was adopted by others and it became the norm
of the day. Loads of break bulk shipments started being executed on board liner vessels.
Not only are we focused on Government departments and undertakings, but we are also working with private
organisations and ensuring that all their requirements are met. One of our Private Clients was in a fix as
they had an urgent cargo to be moved from China to Romania. Their existing vendors were unable to find a
solution. We helped this client in moving this cargo from China to Romania and helped him avoid penalties.
This solution opened opportunities for us, and the client started entrusting with his third country movements
on a regular basis.

steadily. We handle critical cargo for clients and have never failed to keep our clients updated and informed.
This level of customer orientation has enabled us to develop long term relations with them, and to become
their preferred logistics partner / consultant.
While continuing to serve the basic freight forwarding needs of our clients whenever any of our clients is stuck,
we pooled in our cognitive capabilities and offered out-of-the-box solutions. These solutions were not only
effective but were efficient as well. One of our solutions went on to become an industry norm. There have been
situations wherein we have taken on behemoths of the international freight forwarding industry, and have
been able to beat them; thanks to our pricing and negotiation strategies. We have focused on developing good
vendors and associates, we have worked on benchmarking and extrapolation. These focused activities have
enabled us to optimize our prices, thus becoming competitive in a tough market.
As a team, we are adept at managing break bulk shipments, air charter shipments, air consol shipments, foreign
country cargo management with competitive pricing. We ensure crystal clean transparency towards our client,
and ensure that all information is protected at all costs. But over and above all these, we are also adept at
coming up with new solutions / products that eventually become a practice in the freight forwarding industry.

22. THE
WINNER
SPEAKS
Mr. Amit Kumar Mukherjee, Asst. Manager [Operations], Logistics
Infrastructure (CFS) – Chennai was declared winner of the Cold
Chain Brand Name Contest. His entry ‘Balmer Lawrie LOGICOLD’
is the brand name of the Cold Chain Solutions being provided by the
Company.
“
“
When did you join Balmer Lawrie and what is your role currently?
I joined Balmer Lawrie in March 2020 and I look after commercial department of Logistics Infrastructure
division at Chennai.
You are shouldering a big responsibility as Head of pan India Cold Chain Units of the Company. Cold Chain
Logistics is a key business of the Company with immense opportunity in the future. Tell us how you are gearing
up to cater to the future demands.
It is my honour that the Company has provided me this opportunity to Head the entire operations of all the
Cold Chain Units. I am basically from an Engineering background and it is in built in my nature to take up new
challenges. It is a really good exposure and I am trying to manage the same very professionally within the defined
boundary.
The cold chain sector is being termed as the sunrise sector gauging its indispensability and the investment potential
in the near future and the sector is developing at an accelerated pace. Our Cold Chain segment is primarily in the
organized segment and the key driver of the industry is the organized food segment, pharma and e-commerce
segments. I would say that this is the best time to venture into this segment, where the industry has started taking
the growth trajectory.
We are fully geared up to take the Company’s plan forward. Our Hyderabad unit can be seen as one of the preferred
infrastructures for pharma. Our focus is to be a game changer in this industry by implementing technological
advancements such as bar-coding system and SAP based WMS system engaging the highly skilled and industry
experienced professionals even at the base level of operations. We are planning to expand our footprint in other
locations either by way of putting up new infrastructure or on light asset model. This will establish our brand
‘LOGICOLD’ on pan India basis. We are already operating our own reefer vans and currently their performance in
terms of generating revenue is appreciable. This is also giving us an opportunity to further expand in the investment
for procurement of other category vehicles. Going forward our focus will be to get into complete Cold Chain
Logistics solutions and catering to end-to-end demands.
What are the challenges in your role and how do you combat them?
The major challenges being faced currently are all external. Balmer Lawrie is new in this industry, and immediate
conversion does take some time. The other factor is a tag of PSU; while it creates the element of trust, private
players, who are mainly our customers, always have the apprehension of slow and time taking response, issues on
services etc. However, after putting up continuous efforts and consistent support from the management, we are able
to retain all the customers with whom we have started a relationship. Due to this effort, we are able to currently
serve top brands of Pharma and FMCG, MR such as BBIL, DRL, HUL, Amul, Reliance and many more.
What are you doing to keep the teams in different locations engaged?
All our Cold Chain Units are hardly 3-4 years old, and the Unit Heads are also not very old in the system. So, as
Head [Operations] I am trying to hand hold the entire team and regularly motivate them in every aspect of their
areas. I am in touch with all the staff of each location and I guide them in case of any support they require. Frequent
visits to the unit and close interaction with the team members also provide them a great sense of togetherness.
We had an interaction with Rakesh Ranjan Choudhary, Head
[Operations] of the newly formed SBU: Cold Chain. Mr. Choudhary is
based at Mumbai.

23. How does it feel to be declared winner of the contest?
Itfeelsincredibletobedeclaredaswinneramongstthelargenumberofparticipantsasitgivesasenseofachievement.
It’s really a great feeling when the efforts result into fruitful outcomes and get acknowledged. It’s not something that
happens every day in our lives, but whenever it happens it feels great. It’s an emotion which is more complex to
explain in words. It’s rather easy to experience.
Tell us what the thought process behind creating “LOGICOLD” was.
I have always had a desire to create a meaningful brand name with a significant logo and the same desire was
fulfilled by the opportunity extended by Balmer Lawrie for the brand name of its Cold Chain Logistics business
vertical. The main thought process behind creating “LOGICOLD” was that it should connect with the end-user and
the service rendered by “LOGICOLD” should be visible in the name itself, which can be easily remembered. So,
when people see the brand it should be quickly recognized and trigger a positive emotional response. Therefore,
the brand name “LOGICOLD” was created which is unique and stands out from the competition, it can be easily
pronounced, spelled, remembered and identified.
The brand name “LOGICOLD” relates to the service directly and offers a clear idea about the purpose, benefits and
quality of the services rendered by the brand. The word “LOGI” signifies “Logistics” and “COLD” signifies “Cold
Chain”. Hence, combining these two words “LOGI” & “COLD”, brand “LOGICOLD” was created which delivers
complete understanding of Cold Chain Logistics solutions in one word.
What is your definition of success?
For me the definition of success is accomplishment of desired outcome, which can be achieved when we try our best
in all aspects of everything we do with realistic goals and passion, as success does not come from setting abstract
goals and work without passion creates undue stress and empty achievements. Success is not only fulfilment of our
individual goals, it is accomplishment of long-term strategic collective goals in a broader perspective.
When not working, what do you enjoy doing?
When I am not working, I like to spend my time in self-exploration i.e. finding myself in different ways. It’s like
exploring passions, experimenting & learning new things, evaluating the skills and identifying what I value about
myself. Self-Discovery and awareness can give plenty of insights into inner self. As part of the self-discovery process,
we might consider taking some time for our unique abilities and how we might use and improve them by using our
skills. Self-discovery might sound like a big, intimidating concept, but it’s just a process of simply examining life
and figuring out what’s missing. Exploring new hobbies, especially ones we have never tried before, can sometimes
be a little overwhelming, and if we go for the more adventurous options, we can increase our confidence. A greater
self-confidence, in turn, can encourage us to keep exploring the talents which we may not have noticed before.
Sometimes our lives move pretty smoothly according to the guidance of parents, teachers, friends, colleagues and
others and we may not give our true self much thought to explore our passions. But until and unless we explore our
passions, we cannot explore the purpose of life and make it rich and meaningful.

are relevant to our business. Identifying segments with opportunities and customers in those identified
segments is something that we continuously work on. It is important to ascertain competitor’s strength
and counter strategize by offering similar or improved solutions for making an in road and gain market
share. We are working on scaling up our strengths and improving on our weaknesses. Enhancing customer
specific engagement with supplier pool for sustainable delivery of services, cost optimization of projects
with sole focus on improving revenue, contribution / manpower and PBT, customised pricing strategies

efficient delivery of services, customer service, governance and control are some other initiatives.
We work as a team with a common objective with clear cut deliverables assigned to each role, celebrate successes,
divide the burden of failures and fire with all cylinders believing in the philosophy that the darkest night also has
12 hours. We aspire to be relevant and essential for our customers to make them competitive in their competitive
environment, we are flexible to change with changing times, multi-task, acquire new skill sets, ensure continuous
on the job training, hand holding and development for continuous improvement. Finally, believing in ourselves is
important and we are developing second line to take the baton forward.
Tell us about one big challenge you have faced in your efforts to achieve customer delight?
I look at things differently. Customers are the nucleus of any organisation. We need to step into their shoes to
understand their real, dormant / latent needs and work towards addressing the same through breakthrough
innovations, process refinement / modifications, measurement and control. Challenge in real sense is not with the
customer but in our mind set.
What inspires you to achieve success?
Success to me is not a landmark or goal. It is a quest for continuous improvement. Goals keep on changing and I
always work towards achieving the same.
Place you belong to and who all are there in your family?
I am born and brought up in Kolkata with working exposure in multiple cities / country in my career span of 28
years. We are a close knit family with my wife (practicing music teacher), my daughter (pursuing BTECH in IT

GST for the states of Karnataka and Kerala.
What do you like about Balmer Lawrie?
I like the working environment. Seniors and colleagues are very supportive. The organisation gives freedom to take
and implement decisions. Balmer Lawrie is an employee friendly organisation and for me, office is my second home
as people are warm, supportive and welcoming.
What is your most memorable moment in Balmer Lawrie?
There are many moments to cherish in the last two and half years of experience. One of the best moments is
associated with handling a prestigious air export charter activity. All were anxiously waiting for the arrival of the
aircraft for carrying the materials and there was anxiety owing to lot of uncertainties and cancellation. Typically,
an air export charter involves multiple flight operations and each one has a unique experience. I felt very happy as
I heard about the news of the landing of the aircraft; it was a feeling that cannot be explained in words. Another
moment was women’s day celebration. All employees whole heartedly participated and made the programme a
grand success. Everybody took an oath to choose to challenge any gender bias in the organisation. Many women
employees shared their life stories, which was inspirational and motivational.
Who is your inspiration in life and why?
My inspiration is my paternal aunt, Dr. Rajambal. She comes from a humble background and was a pillar of a
very big joint family. She pursued doctorate at the age of 45 years balancing her personal and professional life and
travelled across the word as part of research studies. She is extremely down to earth and humble.

‘We take care’ is the motto for SBU: LS. Being in the service sector, customer delight is a non-negotiable instrument.
The beauty of Logistics department is that one got to work in different time zones. Fastest Finger First wins the
show. One needs to grab and execute shipment with same zest. Would like to share an incident; sometime back,
there was shipment from US being handle for one of our esteemed clients. At the 11th hour, the airline denied to
accept the cargo on agreed rate. The engagement being tender business, Balmer Lawrie was obliged to manage
the show. With constant follow up, escalation and negotiation, we handle the case seamlessly and delivered the
shipment to the client within the agreed timeline.

28. How long have you been working with Balmer Lawrie and currently what is your role/dept?
It has been quite a fruitful tenure 5.6 years in Balmer Lawrie. I joined Balmer Lawrie in the month of March
2016 as a Unit-Head of our Company’s first Cold Chain Unit at Hyderabad. I take care of all the day to day
activities and functioning, which includes sales, marketing, operations, ISO and BRC, QA related jobs, Unit –
P & L and customer relations of the Cold Chain Unit at Hyderabad.
The Cold Chain Unit at Hyderabad is playing a major role in contributing to the world’s largest vaccination
drive. How does it feel to Head this unit?
The world’s largest COVID-19 vaccination programme commenced in India on 16th January 2021 and as
on September 2021 our Hyderabad Cold Chain Unit has handled 110 million doses across the country and
neighbour countries. Presently we are handling COVID-19 vaccines like Covaxin, Sputnik-V vaccines. Apart
from the COVID-19 vaccines we are handling around 25 nos. of other lifesaving vaccines as well. On behalf of
Balmer Lawrie and Government of India, it is our honour and responsibility to serve our country during this
pandemic situation.
Tell us about one big challenge you have faced in your efforts to achieve customer delight?
Customer service in today’s world is an essential part of a company’s strategy. With the increasing competition
among all industries, the challenge is to deliver high-quality services and deliverables accompanied by great
customer service. This task, however, is not a piece of cake. In today’s business environment it is important
to have a competitive edge. In a situation when almost everything is easily available, customers have become
less appreciative and are difficult to please. With the advancement in technology and the accessibility of
information, product quality of competing brands and companies are almost at par. At such moments good
customer service becomes a differentiator. However, it is challenging and not an easy task dealing with different
people and trying to meet their expectations. It requires patience, sharp intellect and I would even say even
wisdom to understand the moods of the customer and achieve customer delight.
TheColdChainindustryincludesdifferentproductportfoliosandalltheproductsdon’trequiresameservicesfor
all customers. Each and every customer is having different requirement and it is important that we understand
their actual requirement and accordingly customise our operations and services to meet that requirement.
During my last 5.6 years tenure in Balmer Lawrie, I have faced lot of challenges to achieve customer delight
and customer satisfaction. Catering to the pharma and vaccines segment is very crucial as we have to handle
their legal, statutory, audit compliance etc. Meeting operational and temperature requirements is extremely
important and play a key role to get the business and achieve customer delight.
Who is your inspiration in life and why?
My family is an inspiration in my life because they love and support me unconditionally. They give me the
freedom and don’t set a time limit for work. My seniors are also my inspiration because of their supportive
nature. They continuously give me opportunities to express my views and ideas.

Satayavathi, 7-year-old sweet buddy, Pardhu and god gifted me a sweet baby girl, Joshna, who is 3 years old.

journals.

COLD CHAIN

29. How long have you been working with Balmer Lawrie and currently what is your role/dept?
I have been associated with Balmer Lawrie since June 01, 2020 and currently I am working as Assistant Manager
[Marketing] at the Cold Chain Unit in Mumbai, which is now a part of our newly formed SBU: Cold Chain.
What do you like about Balmer Lawrie?
The best part about Balmer Lawrie (BL) is its open-door culture and the trust shown by the Senior Management
towards their junior team members. Here, in Balmer Lawrie, people enjoy the freedom to perform their
role, which in turn inculcates the sense of responsibility and ownership towards one’s job. The work culture
/ environment is very friendly with leaders of each Unit open to suggestions for improvement. Further, the
Company’s SBU wise focussed approach is something which allows equal and undivided attention to its each
and every Unit. From personal point of view since my academic and professional experience has always been
resonating with Logistics as academically as I am a Marine Engineer from DMET Kolkata, MBA (Marketing &
Strategy) from IIM along with professional experience of over 5 years in logistics & related areas in companies
like Sinogas Singapore, PwC India etc., BL offered me an altogether new opportunity to further allow me to
expand my practical knowledge. I got the chance to observe from close quarters our LI, LS verticals comprising
of CFS, ICP, MMLH, AMTZ, Freight Forwarding and Cold Chain and follow my passion to continue exploring
and growing in this field. It is a pleasure to be a part of such an organisation, which has a very long and rich
history along with a healthy reputation of continuously innovating across business verticals since 1867.
What is your most memorable moment in Balmer Lawrie?
There are lots of those moments which I have collected in a short stint of 1 year but the best feeling was when
we got BRC AA accreditation for our Cold Chain Unit at Patalganga Unit in our very first audit driven by me.
Further, I can take pride in fact that our team at this Unit in spite of the fair share of challenges continued
working tirelessly for our customers, who mainly deal with Export-Import of perishable commodities even
during peak of COVID-19 that impacted Mumbai very badly. This helped in constantly increasing our revenue
as well as increasing our customer base which in turn led us to slowly accelerate momentum for our Cold
Chain Unit and go that extra mile in serving our customers.
Who is your inspiration in life and why?
My inspiration in my life are actually lot of people and I won’t name a single person as I believe no single person
is that perfect to be so inspirational. However, I try to take away best traits from every single person, who left
some kind of impression in my life. Like I am fond of my father’s simplicity and hard work, mother’s dedication
to whatever she does. But one person who has definitely left an ever-lasting impact on my life is someone who
is an inspiration for many people. He is the ex-captain of New Zealand (NZ) cricket team, Brendon McCullum,
who I follow very closely till date. I feel the way he carried his team when they were bowled out for 45 in a test
match against South Africa in Cape Town in 2012, to taking NZ in finals of World Cup 2015, to finally retiring
with fastest test century in the history of 144 years of test cricket and most importantly shaping the culture,
which they are carrying forward in their game, inspires me to believe that one person can literally inspire and
bring about a massive change with his leadership. Additionally, there is nothing which is impossible to achieve,
if you are following the correct process, as desired outcome is the only result of correct process. It also teaches
a lesson that it is best to quietly go about your business and shock the world with your achievements, when
world is least expecting it from underdogs, which at end of day is not a bad tag to be associated with.
Place you belong to and who all are there in your family?
I belong to Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand. My family comprises of my father Vinay Kumar Sinha, who is now
happily retired from Steel Authority of India Ltd., my mother Veena Sinha, who is currently working as PGT
in Bihar Govt., two elder sisters and my wife Bithika Karamakar, who is working for Punjab National Bank as
an Assistant Manager in Mumbai. My sisters are married and settled with their families in Kerala and Assam.
What are your hobbies?
I follow my passion and do everything what I enjoy. Apart from my work which is my passion, I love to spend
time with my family watching TV series as well as movies, listening to music as well as singing, browsing a lot
on internet, playing sports particularly cricket, badminton, table tennis and go on long drives in the weekends.
I also like to research a lot and write research papers in my free time.

Trees cannot flee,
But they are always free
Trees who save the earth,
Are heroes by birth
Trees bear hot summers,
And the cold winters,
But they never chunter,
As they are a wonder
We cut trees,
But they always glee
Earth survives only,
Because trees thrive
Fruits and flowers,
They shower,
To the one’s who devour,
And to the one’s who require
Trees hold nests,
For birds to rest,
Trees produce air,
So that we don’t despair
-Arko s/o Mr. Adhip Nath Palchaudhuri,
Director [Service Business]
The wind blew stronger than a breeze,
Across the seven seas,
Almost like a mighty gale,
Forcing sailors to put down their sail.
With a loud thud,
And a splash of mud,
Fell the huge tree,
Making the tiny squirrels flee.
After a long and dreadful night,
Next day was an absolute delight,
A clear sky,
And a calm sea.
Birds were chirping cheerfully,
And squirrels were slurping nuts noisily,
I had my hot soup,
While the world had a glossy look.
A beautiful day in the month of July,
And a charming rainbow in the sky,
I saw the sun shining bright yellow,
While I was sitting in the meadow.
