13. How your service differs from just
transport?
Our five-point approach in what we offer our users:
Simplified freight management, real-time visibility,
Insights with actionable data, Increased utilisation
and Secured, faster pay provides us with a greater
advantage over the competition in the market we
operate.
What services do you provide to the
customers? Why should one prefer
you?
Fully Managed Services: We manage the entire
shipping infrastructure including fleet, trip and
load management for large customers.
Trucking Platform Solution: We connect our
shippers with load to reliable and certified truckers
and help them manage all freight from one full-
fledged control room.
Why?
The services we offer helps businesses to move
their cargo using the validated trucks available
on the platform. They get a dashboard with every
detail about their consignment, like the cargo
status (available, in-transit, completed), tracking,
documentation, billing and payments. The
shippers can track where exactly the empty/ loaded
trucks are so that they can manage their loading
and unloading points efficiently. The shippers will
get access to an interrupted supply of trucks for all
their ad-hoc, unpredictable load requirements.
Please do shipping on time is this the
first key to firm your business?
We, at RapidLoops firmly believe that shipping
on time, time should be the DNA of a logistics
business. We don’t tolerate any unhealthy delays
and we act on such situations very quickly and most
of the time proactively to avoid them. We have the
best data available to predict the expected date and
time of deliveries as well. Our promises are made
based on the intelligent system and experience.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
RapidLoops has taken the first step to shape India’s
Bulk Cargo Logistics narrative by empowering the
truckers and shippers with the launch of a simple
14. seamless digital platform. We are set to expand
with a focus on developing new processes and
technological advancements to stay ahead of the
curve in an environment of evolving customer
needs, competition and dynamic regulations.
We aspire to scale, prioritise profitable growth in
our pursuit to become the most valuable startup in
the country in five years.
Whatwasyourworstandbestexperience
in shipping and transporting?
It is too early for us to pick something as the worst
experience. We can state something which was
not as great as we expected. While reaching out
to certain traditional businesses to pitch with our
value proposition to become their logistics service
provider, we faced challenges because of our asset-
light business model as it is currently not the norm
in this sector of logistics. We have to prove our
significant value to sign up our early customers
who were able to spot the difference compared to
their existing service providers.
The other great experience is when one of our key
customers offered us to take over their complete
supply chain management like starting from raw
material procurement to delivery of finished
goods. Although it was a big opportunity, we had
to turn it down temporarily as it requires a great
amount of product customisation which will take
some more time for us to provide. We don’t want
to compromise quality.
What steps do you take to handle last-
minute or unexpected setbacks before
any delivery
Our experienced desk support
team get in touch with all the
stakeholders viz., the delivery
pointsandtruckdriversimmediatelytounderstand
the issue and how it can be remotely solved without
the intervention of truck owners, consignor and
consignee. We as a business operate with 24x7
onsite team members who immediately take over
the issue on the ground and solve them.
Can you describe emerging trends
you've noticed in transportations?
Several trends will drive growth in the Logistics
Sector and all will involve the adoption of
technology. Be it tactical and operational decision
making, routing, fleet optimisation, data analysis,
or strategic planning, technology will be all-
pervasive.
There are a huge number of trends that are
affecting the B2C logistics sector both positively
and negatively. In the bulk cargo sector in which
RapidLoops operate, the embracement of shipment
tracking has become a norm in the ecosystem.
E-pod is slowly getting there which will avoid a
lot of delays and paperwork. At RapidLoops we
believe that blockchain has a lot to offer and we
already are working on it to get the best of it to our
customers.
We also strongly believe the unorganised trucking
industry will be slowly consolidated by players like
us to bring out the value of the integrated supply
system. In the long term, we think iot will bring
significant value and the data that is derived from
15. will drive highly strategic decisions.
Describe a time where you were blamed
for a mistake you did not make?
There is no such situation that we could quickly
recall. Although our business model is an asset-
light one, our clients are expecting us to bring
extreme levels of control and delivery over the
fleet that we operate with as they see it from their
existing asset-heavy operators. It needs some great
levels of engagement to prove that our model of
business is the future where they can work with
super-efficient and organised fleets that do not
need unnecessary control over their operations.
When the fleet owners raise their game with our
end-to-end support, their quality of execution will
become unmatched.
So, just to answer your question I can take this as
an example where we don’t directly own the fleet
but are expected to manage in that. Our clients are
slowly feeling the value addition that we provide as
we grow.

he car and rental business is estimated to have a
value of $15 billion. However, most automobile
rentals today function in an unorganized manner
accounting for almost 90% of the market (around $12
billion). The organized rental vehicle business includes,
among other things, the on-demand automobile rental
market and the employee mobility market.
What is Savaari?
Savaari Vehicle Rentals is an online cab booking
aggregator that offers consumers dependable and
high-quality intercity and local car rental services. Its
services include intercity cabs, one-way drops, airport
transfers, and hourly rentals in the local area. In terms
of geographical coverage, they have been the largest
chauffeur-driven vehicle rental company in India for
the past decade with offices in 1800 locations across
India to assist people commute.
What is their business strategy?
The business strategy of Savaari is to lease or rent
automobiles from merchants. There are no cars owned
by the firm. It took time for Indian customers to grasp
the service and accept their innovative approach in the
pilot year. However, in their second year in business,
they were profitable. While being entrenched in its
core competency of vehicle rental services, Savaari’s
diversification strategy has always been driven by client
requirements.
After a few years into the business, Savaari raised its
Series A investment from Inventus Capital Partners
in March 2012, and its Series B round headed by Intel
Capital and Inventus Capital Partners in September
2013. The service currently has an annual revenue of Rs
80 crore after 14 years in business.
What services do they offer?
Savaari offers the following services on road trips,
utilizing its tech infrastructure and in-house experts:
Outstation round trip rentals: This is one of the
most cost-effective and high-quality options available.
They position themselves as a travel partner for their
customers, rather than being a mere transportation
provider.
Intercity one-way drops: The company has over five
lakh routes where consumers may take a drop from one
city to another and simply pay for one trip.
Flat-rate airport transfers: Regardless of the customer’s
pick-up or drop-off location, Savaari charges a low, one-
time fee to all of their clients who choose this service.

Gaurav Aggarwal, CEO
Gaurav Aggarwal, a former Cisco employee, flew
down to Roorkee, India, in 2004 to see his family.
Gaurav decided to arrange a cab service ahead of
time to transport him from the Delhi airport to the
charming Uttarakhand town. Gaurav was surprised
to discover that in the national capital, there was not
a single trustworthy online vehicle rental choice. This
gave Gaurav fuel for thought, and he went on to create
a vehicle rental firm to serve people like him who need
to commute great distances but don’t know their way
around the city. He explored the concept with his cousin,
who worked in the travel sector, and learned a lot about
the industry. He spent two years conducting the study
before launching the company in two thoughts. He co-
founded Savaari in 2006 while moonlighting with three
other co-founders — Mohit Khanna, Rahul Khanna,
and Manik Shah — who were full-time company
managers in India. Savaari started operations in 2006.
Gaurav started with a low-budget capital of Rs 55,000.
After spending some time in the US, Gaurav returned
to India in May 2011 to work full-time with Savaari.
Competition from Ola and Uber
While businesses like Ola and Uber focus on same-
city commuting, Savaari caters to consumers searching
for intercity or interstate transportation. Savaari sets
itself apart from its competition by combining clever
technology with a strong dose of operational expertise.
The company’s tech-based platform can use this to
collect the best-in-class taxis and drivers on the one
hand and assign the most appropriate cab and driver to
its clients on the other, all at the most reasonable prices.

18. Bike taxis in India
When one looks at Indian roadways, it becomes clear
that the country is dominated by two-wheelers. By De-
cember 2018, India had over 240 million registered cars,
with seventy-five percent of them being two-wheelers.
Millions of Indians, from office workers to bike enthusi-
asts, ride their bikes every day. More two-wheeler vehi-
cles on the road equal more frequent traffic jams.
Bike taxis provide two-way benefits: riders may use an
app to request a cheap bike trip, and bike owners can
make money by providing rides to people in their towns.
The premise is straightforward. The rider can book a
bike taxi using chosen bike-taxi service provider’s app,
obtain the driver’s contact information, and an estimate
of when he will arrive at your location for pick up. Be-
fore they start giving trips, all drivers offering bike taxi
services are vetted and have valid 2-wheeler insurance
coverage.
In numerous Indian cities, bike taxis have become
one of the most economical modes of transportation
for everybody. Riders just have to pay a little fee. The
amount of traffic on Indian roadways is steadily increas-
ing, making it harder for people to save time when trav-
eling. Numerous bike-taxi companies guarantee that a
rider adapts to more environmentally friendly modes of
transportation. These businesses specialize in providing
last-mile connectivity.
What is Baxi?
Baxi, headquartered in Gurgaon, Haryana, is India’s
first on-demand motorcycle taxi firm. Baxi collaborates
with motorcycle taxi drivers (Baxi friends) to provide
the average man with the option to be an entrepreneur
rather than an employee. The firm has already complet-
ed 10,000 rides and quadrupled its fleet within a month
of starting operations.
Their progress
The firm earned $1.5 million in one of the country’s
largest seed rounds, which was led by HT Media and
included 25 other notable private investors. Baxi began
commercial operations in Gurgaon in December 2015,
and in January 2016, it expanded to Faridabad, mak-
ing it the country’s largest and fastest-growing motor-
cycle taxi company. It is now focusing on growing its
operations throughout Haryana, India, as well as estab-
lishing operational excellence in the locations where it
operates. Alok Mittal; co-founder of finance firm Indifi
Technologies, Ramesh Awtaney, founder and chairman
of information technology business ISON Technologies;
Mohit Khurana and Deekshant Sahrawat, co-founders
of Roots Education; and Ashish Chhaparwal, creator of
US-based children transportation service KidzJet, are
among the new investors in the round. The business last
received the money in November 2015, when a group
of high-net-worth people gave it $1.4 million in initial
capital.

which allows low-wage employees to purchase person-
al motorbikes. The company also provides businesses
with hyperlocal delivery options and also assists them
in empowering their employees by giving them a mode

Extension of services
Baxi aims at extending its services to incorporate hy-
perlocal delivery options. Baxi will utilize funds to cre-
ate a hyperlocal ordering app for grocery, personal care
items, medicines, health supplements, food, and dairy
goods. For that purpose, the business has collaborated
with Patanjali, a fast-moving consumer products com-
pany. Baxi will give motorcycles to Patanjali staff at all
of its retail locations as part of the partnership. Cus-
tomers may place orders using the Baxi app, which can
be downloaded from the Google Play Shop or the App

20. What is Drivezy?
Drivezy is a next-generation car and bike-sharing
platform.Itisonitswaytorevolutionizingthewaypeople
buy and use cars. The founders of Drivezy imagine a
future in which having a vehicle or a bicycle is no longer
necessary. Today, Drivezy is India’s quickest-growing
vehicle and bike rental company. Millennials nowadays
do not believe in car ownership or upkeep. They believe
in renting, enjoying, and having a good time. Drivezy
(previously JustRide) is the largest automobile and two-
wheeler sharing marketplace in India. Travelers may use
Drivezy to rent scooters, motorbikes, and automobiles
from locals.
The beginning of their journey
Abhishek Mahajan, Amit Sahu, Ashwarya Pratap Singh,
Hemant Kumar Sah, and Vasant Verma are the founders
of Drivezy. It all began when one of the co-founders,
Ashwarya Singh, purchased a new automobile, which
was involved in an accident quite early on. Singh
didn’t use the automobile very much, but he still spent
a significant portion of his pay on its upkeep. This
inspired him to create a platform where people could
hire automobiles.
Another motivation for the creation of Drivezy, then
justride.in, was the fact that the majority of Indians
cannot afford to purchase automobiles. He then
discussed the concept with his college buddies, who are
now co-founders, and started Drivezy in Bangalore in
2015.
Just Ride was the previous name for Drivezy. To extend
and grow their user base, the team decided to include
bikes in their product line in 2017. Drivezy operates
based on a paradigm in which owners’ perfect cars
and bikes are listed with them, allowing them to earn
money even when the vehicles are not in use. Individual
commercial vehicle owners are also enrolling with
Drivezy to generate money.
The car owners’ lack of trust was the first and most
significant roadblock for Drivezy. They wouldn’t let
strangers hire their automobiles. Although Drivezy
offers assurances, an aggregator model, peer-to-peer
sharing, and user background checks, the Indian market
presents a significant barrier.
Due to financial difficulties, the second barrier was the
difficulty in leasing and purchasing automobiles.
Their services
When car owners are not using their vehicles, they
may advertise them on Drivezy and consumers can
hire them at any time. Users can take advantage of the

lthough air travel is considered to be the
safest mode of travel based on statistical data,
it is not so in reality. Air travel is the riskiest
mode of travel and requires extreme precision in the
implementation and use of its technology to ensure
safe journeys. Air accidents or crashes can be loosely
classified based on their cause as follows:
■ Mid-air collisions
■ Engine failures
■ Cabin depressurization
■ Mechanical defects
■ Maintenance failure
■ Fuel leaks
■ Aircraft Cooling System failures
■ Bad weather conditions
■ Pilot fatigue
■ Autopilot malfunction
■ Airplane stalls
■ Landing gear failure
■ Communication failure with ATC
While European nations had already adopted new
technology for the avoidance of mid-air collisions,
India was lagging. The government didn’t realize the
importance of these systems until the Charkhi-Dadri
mid-air collision took place in 1996. Before 1996, the
ATC tower of Delhi airport only gave information
regarding the position of incoming and outgoing
aircrafts in airway corridors (called primary radars) but
did not give any indication as to the aircraft’s altitude or
identity (secondary surveillance radar). This proved to
be devastating as they failed to avoid the deadly mid-air
collision that took place over Charkhi-Dadri.
Modern Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance
System (TCAS), which is currently indispensable for
international and domestic flights in the majority
of countries’ airspace, must meet several ICAO
(International Civil Aviation Organization) standards.
TCAS communicates with a conventional airborne
mode S transponder to get altitude information. The
Mode S transponder is a component of the secondary
radar beacon ATC system, which was created many

Modern aircrafts implement several collision avoidance
systems while they are airborne. This article describes
one of these systems in brief.
TrafficCollisionAvoidanceSystem(TCAS)
A transponder is a device that responds to a signal by
emitting a separate signal. In the context of aviation,
these transponders receive a signal in the form of a
radio-frequency interrogation. Radar is a detecting
device that employs radio waves to identify an object’s
distance, angle, or velocity. Air Traffic Control (ATC)
uses two types of radars to retrieve information about
aircrafts:
Primary radar: It is a standard radar sensor
that uses an electromagnetic wave to light a broad
area of space and then receives reflected waves from
targets inside that area. As a result, the phrase refers
to a radar system that detects and locates potentially
hostile objects.
Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR):
Unlike primary radar systems, which use detected
radiosignalreflectionstodetermineatarget’sbearing
and distance, secondary surveillance radar relies on
targets equipped with a radar transponder, which
respond to each interrogation signal by transmitting
encoded data such as an identity code, the aircraft’s
altitude, and other data depending on the mode
selected. The transponder on the aircraft consists of
two parts:
■ A radio receiver: Receives on 1030 MHz frequency
■ A radio transmitter: Transmits on 1090 MHz
frequency
Transponder codes
Transponder codes are four-digit numbers sent by
an aircraft’s transponder in response to a secondary
surveillance radar interrogation signal to help air traffic
controllers separate traffic. Air traffic controllers give
a discrete transponder code (also known as a squawk
code) to each aircraft in a flight information zone to
identify it individually (FIR). This enables airplanes to
be easily identified on radar. The dials of a transponder
read from zero to seven inclusively, and codes are made
up of four octal (numbers from 0-7 expressed as a
power of eight) numbers. Transponders with four octal
digits may represent up to 4096 distinct codes, which
is why they’re frequently referred to as “4096 code
transponders.” When giving a transponder code to an
aircraft, air traffic control units use the word “squawk,”
for example, “Squawk 7321.” As a result, “squawking
7321” can be translated as “choose transponder code”
or “I have picked transponder code 7321.”
Classic modes of function of transponders
These transponders function in different modes and the
aviation industry uses specific modes for the retrieval
of specific data related to the aircraft. These modes are:
- Mode A: The equipment of this mode transmits a
transponder code only.
- Mode C: The ATC can view the aircraft’s height or
flying level automatically with Mode C equipment.
- Mode S: This is an advanced version of Mode C
and is mandatory in all civil aviation procedures. The
SSR system, TCAS receivers onboard aircraft, and
the ADS-B SSR system all receive data from Mode S
transponders. ADS-B stands for Automatic Dependent
Surveillance-Broadcast in which an airplane detects its
location using satellite navigation or other sensors and
transmits it regularly, allowing it to be tracked. Mode S
transponders have reverse compatibility, meaning that
an aircraft equipped with one may still respond to Mode
A or C interrogations. Mode S transponders not only
provide information about the altitude but also permit
data exchange.
The Mode S transponder is usually a distinct piece of
airborne avionics equipment that functions with its
antennae. TCAS employs extra antennas and works in
the same radio range.

24. The presence of Meru
Meru Cabs is a ride-hailing service founded in
India. The company was founded in 2006 by Neeraj
Gupta and is based in Mumbai. Meru changed
the way people traveled in cabs by providing AC
vehicles at their doorstep with just one phone call.
This dates back to the days when Mumbai’s streets
were dominated by Kaali-peeli taxis. Meru is also
known for being one of the first Indian companies
to add electric vehicles to its fleet. It offers people
and corporate entities in 24 cities across India app-
based transportation services such as city rides, city
rentals, airport transfers, and outstation trips.
How was Meru established?
The journey of Meru began with the establishment of
V-Link Group in 2000 by Mr. Neeraj Gupta. V-Link
Fleet Solutions began as a staff transportation
company but has since grown to serve a number
of the BPO industry’s top blue-chip clients. V-Link
grew from a fleet of 300 vehicles to 1300 vehicles in
four years.
The Maharashtra government issued a tender in
August 2006 for the operation of a fleet of 10,000 air-
conditioned, GPS-linked, electronic metered taxis in
Mumbai, to replace the conventional black-yellow
cabs. V-Link and India Value Fund (IVF), a venture
capital firm, formed Meru at this time. Meru was
founded in Mumbai with an initial capital of INR
500 million, offering AC cabs for the first time in
India, with electronic meters and GPS/GPRS system
cabs via a phone booking system.
Their Journey
Meru quickly expanded its services to the top four
cities in India, with a fleet of 5000 cabs by 2010.

Meru served most of India’s metros, Tier-2 and
Tier-3 cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad,
Bangalore, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Vadodara,
Surat, Pune, and Kolkata, by 2015, with a fleet of
9000 cabs.
Meanwhile, Meru formed a partnership with India’s
five major airports and became their official cab
service provider. Meru’s service options had grown
to include city and airport trips, as well as city rentals
and outstation travel by 2018. In Hyderabad, Meru
has partnered with Mahindra Electric to provide
sustainable transportation.
Meru Cabs increased its product options and added

become the second-largest ride-hailing service with
electric vehicles (EV) in its fleet, establishing itself as
an EV-led Tech Mobility Company providing end-

Jugnoo has spread to 40 cities throughout India
in less than two years and is averaging 50,000

company’s concentration on Tier II and III cities has
paid off. The firm has a five-million-strong user base
and over 15,000 vehicle drivers that are affiliated
with the brand.
The Jugnoo app is available on all major smartphone
platforms, including iOS, Android, and Windows.
The Jugnoo Facebook bot may also be used to book

Roadblocks to success
The primary difficulties with the car transport
network, were the auto drivers’ disagreeable
attitude, unavailability, and exorbitant prices. The
aim was to use a smartphone app to tap into a
potential public transportation medium in tier 2
and tier 3 cities, namely the auto-rickshaw, so that
the public could hail it and the auto drivers could
save time waiting; a notion similar to taxi services
like Ola.
Their Marketing Strategy
Jugnoo’s marketing strategy involves turning its
customers and drivers into brand ambassadors.
They’ve taken use of public transportation’s on-
demand availability as well as its dual capability
of home delivery. They’re expanding rapidly in
big cities by forming smart partnerships with
companies that expand their prospective client
base.
Saumya Tondon, a well-known TV and film actress,
was chosen as Jugnoo’s spokesperson. Jugnoo has
profited greatly from word-of-mouth exposure.
To recruit new clients, Jugnoo uses user referral
programs and social media advertising.

28. Porter explained
Porter is a company that offers technology-assisted
metropolis logistics. Porter has offices in Mumbai,
Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and
Ahmedabad along with a few other cities. With
Porter, people can hire a small truck or tempo for
personal use or a company.
What makes Porter stand out?
Porter offers mini truck reservations that are quick,
dependable, and cost-effective. People can save
more than 30% of their expenditure due to their
cost-effective deals. They have a large vehicle fleet to
select from, including Tata Ace/ Chota Hathi, Tata
407/ Super ace, Pickup 8ft, Eeco, and more. People
are given the option to track their fares in real-time,
including the position of the truck, the contact
information for the driver, and more. They have an
innovative way of settling payments. They pay using
their wallet and earn cashback, which allows them
to save even more money. Customers can also check
their full payment history in one place. With the aid
of their specialized fleet and in-house technology,
they enable e-commerce, FMCG, SMEs, merchants,
3PLs, Courier, and Cargo businesses to streamline
their logistics. ITC, Flipkart, Amazon, Furlenco,
Delhivery, Aramex, Urban Ladder, Pepperfry, Parle
Agro, and a variety of other companies are among
our clients.
Their smart handling of technology
Majority of businesses today experience difficulties
with last-mile delivery. Loading time, travel time,
unloading time, and the time between two trips,
which are the major components of logistics, are not
in compliance with the standards in India. All four
components are ineffective in India. Loading and
unloading are thrown into the hands of the client.
Furthermore, the sector is rife with incompetence.
Porter has a smartphone app on all of their vehicles.
GPS, which is also utilized by Ola and Uber, is used
to enable them all. Because of better visibility on
each car, they can drive better SLAs. If a vehicle is
late or the driver has not yet departed, we transfer
the order to another vehicle and punish the driver so
that he/she does not repeat the mistake.
The company has arranged for dispatch centers that
receive delayed notifications. They contact the driver,
inquiring as to why he hasn’t gone or requesting that
he do so as quickly as possible. The client receives
an automated message apologizing for the delay and
notifying them that the order has been allocated to a
different driver.
With regards to travel time, currently, every driver
in intra-city logistics must return empty. Because
Porter can operate on a big scale on their platform,
about 88 percent of their voyages have a return load.
No intra-city player offers a guarantee on return
loads like this.
The time spent waiting between two visits has been
optimized by having a large number of clients and
drivers, ensuring that the variability factor isn’t high.
Porter relies entirely on techno-savvy gadgets.
Everything is built on technology: the allocation
radius, the allocation algorithm, the ability to drive

Pranav Goel, CEO, and Co-Founder
Pranav Goel is the chief of Porter. He lived in Delhi
for the first ten years before moving to Gujarat,
which widened his cultural horizons significantly.
He relocated to Kota and then directly to IIT
Kharagpur, following the logical steps to IIT. He was
initially hesitant to relocate to a small town, but this
experience shifted his viewpoint and influenced who
he has become. Kharagpur taught him the value of
content over appearance. He worked for 6 months at
cognizant after graduation followed by JP Morgan.
However, he felt that these positions were a misfit for
him as he had spent his childhood in a household of
entrepreneurs and had always dreamt of establishing
his own business. He met e HeUttam, one of the
co-founders in Kharagpur, and Vikas, another co-
founder has been a friend of his since the time he
was in Kota. Uttam was the one who came up with
the concept of Porter. There were a lot of LCVs that
weren’t being used to their full capacity, and Porter
was born out of the necessity to solve this demand
and supply dilemma.

30. I
ndia’s logistics industry is still in its infancy, and it
has a long way to go before it can compete with its
international counterparts. The business is very
fragmented, with issues such as poor infrastructure
and transportation, complicated tax regulations,
a lack of IT infrastructure, and a lack of industry
preparedness.
Road transport is now the most popular form of
transport in India, accounting for around 68 percent
of all logistics operations. On Indian roadways,
there are around 1.5 million trucks, and the number
is steadily increasing. Railways are preferable for
delivering bulk commodities over large distances
since they are comparatively less expensive. Trains
deliver major goods such as cement, food grains,
petroleum products, iron ore, and raw materials.
Few laws govern the operations of cargo and logistics
in India.
This article describes three of these laws in brief:
Multimodal Transportation of Goods
Act, 1993
The idea of multimodal transportation refers to the
transfer of products from one location to another
under the control of a single transport operator i.e.
it is a transportation system in which a single carrier
controls or owns many modes of transportation.
The Multimodal Transportation of Goods Act
allows the registration of a person as a multi-modal
transport operator and regulates the multimodal
transportation of products from any location in India
to any location outside India under the terms of a
multimodal transport contract. Under the act, both
the consignor (the person on behalf of whom goods
will be transported) and the carrier (the person in
charge of transportation of goods and who is legally
registered to do so) have to sign a contract.
The salient features of the Act are as under:
No individual may carry on or start a multimodal
transportation business unless he is registered
under this Act.
When the competent authority receives the
application for registration, it must verify that the
applicant meets the following requirements:
■ That the applicant is a company, firm, or
proprietary concern operating in the shipping or
freight forwarding industry in India or overseas,
with a minimum annual revenue of fifty lakh

31. rupees in the previous financial year or a three-
year average yearly turnover of fifty lakh rupees,
as verified by a Chartered Accountant under the
Chartered Accountants Act, 1949 (38 of 1949 )
■ The company’s subscribed share capital, or the
total amount in the capital account of the firm’s
partners, or the proprietor’s capital, is not less
than fifty lakh rupees
■ That the applicant has offices, agents, or
representatives in at least two other countries.
If satisfied, the government will register the
applicant as a multimodal transport operator and
provide a certificate allowing it to continue or
begin its multimodal transportation business.
Any applicant who is not a resident of India and
is not involved in the shipping industry will not
be given registration until he has established a
business in India.
A certificate issued under this act is valid for three
years and may be renewed for another three years
at any time.
A renewal application must be submitted in
the form required by the Central Government,
together with the fees indicated by the Central
Government, provided, however, that such costs
do not fall below ten thousand rupees and do not
exceed twenty thousand rupees.
The salient features of this act are as follows:
After the commencement of this Act, no person
may participate in the business of a common
carrier unless he has been issued a certificate of
registration.
Any person engaged or intending to participate
in the business of a common carrier must apply
to the registering authority for the issuance or
renewal of a certificate of registration for carrying
on the business of a common carrier.
The Act requires an application to be made to
the registering authority in the area where the
applicant resides or has his principal place of
business, stating that the application is for the
main office, in the form and manner prescribed
by the registering authority, and accompanied by
the fees prescribed by the registering authority.
A certificate of registration given under this act
includes the information of main office and
branch offices to be run in various States and
Union territories, and it is valid for ten years from
the date of grant or renewal, as applicable.
The conditions of eligibility for registration are not
mentioned explicitly in the act indicating that they
are subject to amendment.
The Warehousing (Development and
Regulation) Act, 2007
The salient features of this act are:
No person shall begin or continue in the
warehousing business unless he has acquired a
registration certificate from the Authority under
this Act for the warehouse or warehouses in
question.
Furthermore, warehouses that do not intend to
provide negotiable warehouse receipts will not
be needed to register. The phrase “negotiable
warehouse receipt” refers to a warehouse receipt
in which the goods represented are deliverable
to the depositor or order, the endorsee takes
a good title to the goods represented, and the
endorsement has the effect of transferring the
goods represented.
The Authority may authorize any person
registered under section 5 as an accreditation
agency to issue a certificate of accreditation to any
person to carry on the business of warehousing
and issue negotiable warehouse receipts, subject
to the Authority’s regulations and guidelines.
Any individual who wishes to start or continue
the business of keeping a warehouse that issues
negotiable warehouse receipts may apply to
the Authority for registration of one or more
warehouses that he owns or occupies.
The Authority may not issue a certificate of
registration under this section unless it is satisfied
that the warehouse in question has adequate
facilities and safeguards for storing goods of the
nature specified in the application and that the
applicant meets the financial, managerial, and
other eligibility criteria and competence as may
be required.

money throughout the day. Shadowfax offers a
variety of services, from sending riders for 30-minute
deliveries to four-day deliveries. This business does
not use a delivery fleet.
Staying relevant
Shadowfax is used by the most well-known Indian
businesses in food, e-commerce, groceries, and
healthcare for on-demand delivery. Shadowfax
gives companies access to cutting-edge logistics
technologies and a dependable delivery network.
Shadowfax’s multi-modal platform has over 15,000
delivery partners that use bikes, minivans, trucks,
airplanes, and even electric vehicles. Businesses may
use Shadowfax’s platform to supply everything from
food to groceries to pharmaceuticals to clothing and

He possesses a diversity of skills. His skillset
includes temporal management, willingness to

Their core values
Working with the greatest honesty and integrity is
the most essential thing the founders stress upon. To
get the best out of everyone, one must be fully honest
with themself, their peers, and their superiors.
Clarity of thought and total transparency in
communication is another signature rule that the
makers follow. Transparent and unambiguous
communication assists stakeholders in properly
understanding company demands and in taking
rapid action, therefore saving everyone’s bandwidth
in the long run.
2016 economic slump was a watershed moment for
the entire Shadowfax team. Rather than focusing
on short-term goals, they learned how to establish a
company that can produce long-term value. It taught
them the value of unit economics and its application.
Shadowfax, an inspiration
There is no replacement for a hard effort. Hard labor,
however, does not guarantee progress. Being aware
of possibilities and thinking outside the box to bring
about disruptive innovation to turn opportunities
into viable and successful ventures is the key to
success.
Future goals
In the next five years, the makers believe in creating
chances rather than jobs, and via this business,
they have already started contributing to society
by providing self-driven employment options for
thousands of freelancers on the Shadowfax platform.
By working with Shadowfax, they hope to generate a
million micro-entrepreneurs in India in the next few
years who would be able to make a decent life.

34. Introduction to Trukky
AccordingtotheAllIndiaMotorTransportCongress,
India has about 12 million vehicles, with roughly
90% of them belonging to single-truck proprietors
in tiny communities. This is what makes integrating
technology into their life so challenging.
Trukky is India’s first pricing comparison website
that allows customers to schedule transportation
services online. Trukky is a logistics aggregator that
provides on-demand transportation services for full
load and part load products. The company provides
high-quality service at a reasonable cost, and every
shipment is backed by cutting-edge technology and
exceptional customer service. Trukky provides clients
with a one-stop-shop for delivery across India. The
firm makes every effort to assist its customers with
special requests that a local carrier would be unable
to meet.
Their strategy
Direct communication with drivers and fleet
owners eliminates the broker/transporter profit
margin, lowering client expenses and costs. Trukky
can function as a one-stop solution for PAN India
demands because of its extensive network of drivers
and fleet owners across the country. Trukky serves
clients/customers from a variety of sectors, including
Paper&Pulp,FMCG,Cement,AgriculturalProducts,
E-commerce, FMCD, and Chemical, with over 5,000
supply items linked to the system.
Customers and drivers can utilize the Trukky apps
to join the network. Customers may book trucks in
three simple steps using the Trukky Intercity Logistics
app, while suppliers can use the Trukky Vendors app.
Trukky has also created a rate index, TRaI, to bring
clients up to date on freight cost changes.
What’s unique about Trukky?
Trukky is a web and app-based online logistics
platform, which harnesses the power of technology,
provides a contemporary and simpler manner of
truck hiring and monitoring at the touch of a button.
Trukky promises to offer greater convenience and
transparency to the trucking industry through a rate
index, live pricing, and a three-step booking tool.
Trukky also delivers agricultural and heavy industrial
items in over 50 locations across India. The company
aspires to provide on-demand, high-quality service
at a reasonable price, and to support each shipment
with technology and customer care. Even though
the brand’s core business is load sharing, it is not
only a truck aggregator but also a space for both full
truckload and part load.
Subhasish Das, Co-Founder
He is a former sailor who has worked in e-commerce,
logistics, and media for over ten years.

with no service delivery guarantee. We thought
why not build an app for truckers, but since the
segment was huge and fragmented, we decided to
start with intracity logistics in 2015,” he recalls.
Trukky was the idea of Subhasish Das (35) and Saswat
Sahu, who founded the company in 2015. He met
Saswat through a shared acquaintance while working
for TFS, and because he comes from a family that
owns a transportation company, the idea of Trukky
was mutual.
While getting started, the founders discovered that
the sector was beset by a variety of issues, with pricing
being the most significant. As a result, the team
began researching the numerous dynamic elements
that impact price and created a pricing algorithm to
provide clients with quick dynamic pricing for both
load sharing and full truckloads.
Their plans
Trukky is presently performing approximately 400
transactions each month with an average ticket
amount of Rs 15,000, backed by a 26-member staff.
Since its inception in 2015, the company has funded
$450,000 in two rounds from startup founders
and well-known investors in investment banking,
technology, and manufacturing. LetsVenture, an
online financing platform for early-stage investing
in India, coordinated both rounds. Going forward,
the business aims at more than 5,000 monthly
transactions.

ecause India’s resources and markets are
scatteredacrosslargeareas,providingefficient,
low-cost, dependable, and safe transportation
infrastructure and services becomes even more
important. With a total length of 5.89 million
kilometers, India boasts the world’s second-largest
road network (km). This road network carries 64.5
percent of all products in India, while 90 percent
of all passenger traffic in India travels by road. The
sale of vehicles and the transit of freight by road in
India are rapidly increasing. However, the current
road infrastructure is inadequate for these changing
trends. Uniform construction of roads in urban and
rural areas remains a dream. Moreover, maintenance
and repair work on existing roads is sluggish and
unprofessional.
Road engineering in India has progressively taken
a backseat since the introduction of roads as their
structure has deteriorated beyond the point of
repair in most regions. There is no adequate process
in place for road safety audits, which means there
is no meaningful, independent effort to verify that
highway designs and construction are as safe as
possible. Potholes, semi-constructed roads, poorly
concreted speed breakers, and a deteriorating
drainage system on the roads are contributing to an
increase in accidents, deaths, and health problems
in the country, as well as a source of frustration, as
demonstrated by the recent massive traffic jam in
Gurgaon, in the Indian capital’s region. The issue is
due to three factors:
1.
Unstable and poor quality material used for
construction
2. Lack of maintenance
3. Lack of organized construction of roads
In many cities, roads have been constructed in
alternating segments of cement and asphalt without
proper alignment, uniformity of distribution.
This has led to greater instability of their structure
and early deterioration. There has also been a rise
in spinal injuries among persons who ride two-
wheelers, as well as other spinal issues among drivers
of all types of vehicles. In recent years, several
Ailing Roadways of India:
Spotlight
38 JULY 2021 SwiftNLift
39. accidents and even deaths have been reported as a
result of potholes, uneven speed breakers, and roads
in need of repair or development, and the numbers
are steadily rising.
Indian residents have a legal entitlement to well-
maintained roadways, and any losses incurred as
a result of inadequate road infrastructure can be
recovered. However, the authorities have been
denying the right from its inception, and potholes
remain a terrible reality throughout the country.
Choosing asphalt over cement would prove to be
beneficial to the roads of the country. In September
2011, a Ministry investigation discovered a shortage
of trained technicians on building sites. There are
also claims that rules prohibiting machines and
contractors are in place, forcing unskilled manual
labor to maximize employment, resulting in roads
that are damaged every monsoon season and must
be rebuilt every year.
When it comes to motor transportation, there is
minimal cooperation and coordination across
states. As a result, motor transportation faces several
challenges. In this regard, the states should adopt a
coordinated approach. In India, 60% of villages lack
accesstohighways.Itharmsouragriculturalandrural
economies. In rural regions, the government should
construct roads as quickly as possible. Additionally,
there is a scarcity of guest homes and motels along
the highways. More guest rooms should be erected
along the roadside so that people may travel great
distances without difficulty.
Due to increased operating expenses of road
transport due to high prices of petroleum products
and diesel, as well as India’s significant tax load on
motor vehicles, the method of transportation is
becoming more expensive.
