2. Linnean Classification
• Scheme of classification begins with concept of species.
• SPECIES:-Species is defined as the group of indivisuals which have the
capacity to interbreed amongst themselves to produce fertile
offsprings.
• This is the basic unit of classification.
• Species is the lowest and taxonomic category.
• It may be divided into sub-species.
• Ex- Panthera leo(Lion)
• Asiatic lion- Panthera leo persica,where persica is sub-species.
3. Linnean Classification
• GENUS:-A genus is a group of related species with common ancestery.
• Genus have specific position in taxonomy.
• A species can’t be named with out genus.
• It may be monotypic(have one species) and polytypic(have many
species).
• Example- Panthera leo and Panthera tigris have genus Panthera.
4. Linnean Classification
• FAMILY:- Family includes one or more related genera with distint
characters of difference.
• The genera Panthera and genus Felis are included under same family
Felidae.
• Family Felidae and family carnivora (include dogs,fox,wolf)are quite
different.
5. Linnean Classification
• ORDER:- One or more related families make one order.
• It is the next higher category to family.
• Family carnivora includes Felidae,Viverridae,Hyaenidae,Canidae and
Ursidae.
• Viveridae includes Civets.
