Parturition and lactation
1. PARTURITION
Parturition is the process of delivery of feotus because of strong
contraction of uterus.
It takes place after the gestation period of 280 days.
Once the fully developed feotus gives fetal ejection reflex, the release of
oxytocin hormone from pituitary occurs.
The oxytocin results in strong contraction of uterus wall which leads to
the expulsion of feotus.
Before birth pain start at regular contractions is called labour pain.
2. LACTATION
.Lactation is the secretion and yielding of milk by females after giving
birth.
The milk is produced by the mammary glands, which are found within
the breasts..
The first stage of milk that develops during pregnancy is called
colostrum.
Thick and yellow in color, colostrum lasts a few days after the baby is
born.
This milk is rich in protein, antibodies, vitamins and minerals.
Secretion and storage of milk is carried out under the influence of
prolactin.
Ejection of milk is stimulated by oxytocin
