• In Britain:
– Sunday School began as an effort to teach poor
children how to read
– Parliament voted to spend money to build public
schools for poor children
– Required children to attend between ages 5-10
– Later it was 5-14, and then part time until 18

– First to provide primary education that was
required for all children
– Developed one of the finest systems of education
in Europe

11. • France
– Jules Ferry formed the school system that
required all children to attend school until the age
of 15
– This system has continued with little change
