• Pathanamthitta has ~145 sawmills in which ~120 are
presentlly running
• Covered the North-west parts of pathanamthitta
• Konni,Ranni,Kumbazha,Karikullam and Kozhencheri
• Covered 20 Sawmills
• Most of them were more than
40 years old sawmill
3. Species and their Trade
• The most used Timber species in the sawmills are
– Arthocarpus hetrophyllus
– Arthocarpus hirsutus
– Tectona grandis
• In most of the sawmill there is only cutting and plaining of
timber and not any trade of timber
• Cost of different Tree species are calculated on different criteria
in most of the sawmill
• Species like Tectona grandis,Arthocarpus hirsutus, Acaccia
mangiam etc. cost are calculated per cu.ft
• In Species like Tamarindus indicus cost is calculated per Tone
4. Trade of Coco Wood
• In most of the sawmills coco wood are traded for roofing
purpose
• Processing of coco wood or any other timber species are
not done in any of the sawmills surveyed
• In every sawmill cost of coco wood are calculated per 10ft.
Cost ~300/10
• None of the Sawmills complained about any difficulties in
the trade of coco wood
5. Timber Calculator
• In most of the sawmills the volume of the logs are
estimated in cu.ft using a book called Timber calculator
• It is easly estimated using the mid girth of the loge and its
length

7. Problems and Other Relavent info.
• The common problem faced by majority of the sawmills
were “Unavailability of skilled labours”
• Other major problems faced by the sawmills include
– Scarcity of work
– Voltage issues of eletricity
– Unavailability of timber
– Gov. issues
• The felling of prematured mahagoney and Anjili was
noted as relavent information from one of the sawmill
• The sudden decress in the demand of Mahagoney was
also as a relavent information
