2.  The word journalism is derived from
“Journal”.
 Journal means a daily register or a diary – a
book containing each day’s business or
transactions.
 A journal is defined as a register of a diary
of public events which has a definite
periodicity of publications say a daily,
weekly, a bi-weekly, fortnightly and
monthly so on.

Purpose of Journalism is
 To Inform

various issues.

6. Agricultural journalism is journalism as
applied to agriculture i.e. Agricultural
journalism is a profession of conducting
or writing in agriculture and allied
subjects for a journal, which may be a
newspaper, a magazine, radio, a
television. (Sadamate, 2016).

7. Journalism means “the
collection, preparation and
editing of material of
current interest for
presentation, publication or
broadcast”.

not just
reporting of
events.

9.  Collection of information
 Professionals are known as Reporter.
 Collect and report information which has
some news value.
 News values are general guidelines or
criteria used by media outlets, such
as newspapers or broadcast media, to
determine how much prominence to give to a
story.

 Routine Type: Press Briefing Meeting.
 Predictable: River water Rising to a
dangerous level.
 Unpredictable: Sudden spread of disease.
 Hazardous: War reporting.

11. Editing the information:
 Professionals are known as “Editor”.
 Treat the information to suit the target
audience.
 What Information is to be communicated,
when and how.

12. Editorial decision depend on several factors:
 Overall Management policy of the
organization.
 Location and nature of target audience.
 Nature of medium.
 Urgency of situation.
 Cost involved.

13.  Interpersonal and Mass Media channel.
 Dissemination of information depends on:
Objectives
Objectives
Availability of fund.
Expected cost and return.

14.  Selecting a message appropriate to the
needs, interest and level of target
audience.
 Treatment and presentation of the message
in a way to make it meaningful to the target
audience.
 Communicating the message through media
socially and economically acceptable to the
target audience.

15.  Farmers like many others are also curious.
 They want to know what is happening or has
happened about agriculture. They have a desire
for information.
 People who can read, listen and have
information enjoy certain status in our villages.
 Others look to them as ‘knowing’ or informed
people and look to them for information.

16. The agricultural extension personnel who
are on the job to disseminate the news or
transfer of technology to the farming
community should invariably understand the
agricultural journalism and utilize the mass
media channels effectively.

17.  Embraces all aspects of our life.
 It continuously adds to our awareness,
information and knowledge.
 Changes and enlarges our perspectives.
 It influences opinion forming and policy
making.
 Helps to keep in check the undesirable
activities of individuals and organizations by
exposing them to public.
