2. School in Victorian Era
• Few children went to school. If they went to school, their families lost the money they earned.
• There were some good schools for boys, for example, grammar schools and public schools.
• Poor girls did not go to school when the Victorian age began meaning they had little education. Girls from
wealthy families would usually be taught at home by a governess. Sometimes, wealthy girls may have
attended boarding schools too.

3. Harrow School in 1862. At public schools like Harrow, sport was an important part
of the boys' education

6. 'Dame' schools
Usuallyrun by one woman. Poor parents working hard to earn a living paid the
dame a few pennies a week to look after their children, and perhaps teach them
the alphabet or how to sew.

7. Ragged School
Children at a London 'ragged school' in 1853. Girls and boys were usually taught
separately.

9. School board meeting in 1871. School boards were set up to run local schools in towns
around the country.
By 1880, the law said that all children aged 5 to 10 must go to primary school, so every
child would receive at least a basic education.

30. Stephen Hawking (1942-2018)
English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author, and Director of Research at the
Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge.In 1963
Stephen was diagnosed with ALS, a form of Motor Neuron Disease, shortly
after his 21st birthday.

31. Alexander Graham Bell (March 3, 1847 to August 2, 1922) was a Scottish-born
scientist and inventor best known for inventing the first working telephone in
1876 and founding the Bell Telephone Company in 1877.
