Noun clauses usually begin with words such as how, that, what, whatever, when, where,
which, whom who, whoever, and why.

which can increase productivity and help them learn how to work well in groups.
- This will help students build skills that will aid them throughout their lives.
3.3 Language learning strategies: Circumlocution
In linguistics, Circumlocution is locution that circles around a specific idea
with multiple words rather than directly evoking it with fewer and adapter words. It is
sometimes a necessary tool of communication but it is also often a flaw in
communication.

Text 2
Structure
10. Example
That the brothers are triplets is amazing. (Subject)
We don’t know what songs she often sings. (Object)
The book is about where the dinosaurs laid their eggs. (Object of preposition)
The following examples use the connecting words that, who, and when.
Most people know that a spider has eight legs.
The police were investigating who the serial killer was.
I don’t know when the birds built their nest in the roof.
Example
The leader demands that we treat him like a god.
We insisted that he honor the terms of the agreement.
The father recommended that she not go to the cinema alone.
Noun clauses can be the subject, object,
object of preposition, complement, etc.
A noun clause must have a word to connect the noun clause to the
rest of the sentence. The connecting word (connector) comes
before the subject and the verb of the noun clause.
Subjunctive in noun clauses
We use subjective verbs in sentences to express or stress wishes, importance, or
urgency. A subjunctive verb usually appears in a noun clause beginning with that, and
it uses the simple form of a verb that does not have the present, past or future forms.
The subjunctive verb is neither singular nor plural.
11. Text 3
Social media
Social media is a term used to describe the interaction
between groups or individuals in which they produce,
share, and sometimes exchange ideas over the internet
and in virtual communities.
Advantages of Social media
Social networking has increased the rate and quality of collaboration for students. They
are better able to communicate meeting times or share information quickly, which can
increase productivity and help them learn how to work well in groups.
Social networking teaches students skills they’ll need to survive in the business world.
Being able to create and maintain connections to many people in many industries is an
integral part of developing a career or building a business.
By spending so much time working with new technologies, students develop more
familiarity with computers and other electronic devices. With the increased focus on
technology in education and business, this will help students build skills that will aid
them throughout their lives.
12. Disadvantages of Social media
Students who attempt to multi-task, checking social media sites while studying,
show reduced academic performance. Their ability to concentrate on the task at
hand is significantly reduced by the distractions that are brought about by YouTube,
Facebook or Twitter.
The more time students spend on social sites, the less time they spend socializing in
person. Because of the lack of body signals and other nonverbal cues, like tone and
inflection, social networking sites are not an adequate replacement for face-to-face
communication. Students who spend a great deal of time on social networking are less
able to effectively communicate in person.
Effect to behavior. This is also thought to trigger or worsen attention deficit disorder in
some cases. Violence in social media, movies, television and video games may desensitize
teens to violence and lead to aggressive behavior.

16. Post-speaking
Debate
Directions:
1. Make a group of 4.
2. Debate in a topic “Does social media effect to student’s behavior?”

students often surf and waste the time with it so they have more aggressive
to others.
Negative 1: I disagree with you. In my opinion, social media doesn’t effects
to student’s behavior. Nowadays, many students usually surf the internet
and social media. Sometimes they emulate famous person but they also use
or emulate it in the right way.
Expressing an opinion Conceding an argument
If you ask me, ………… Perhaps you’re right.
(Personally) I think……. OK, you win.
If you want my opinion You’ve convinced me.
Agree Disagree
I strongly agree with the topic. I totally disagree.
I couldn't agree with you more. I don't think so. I think …………
You're absolutely right. I'd say the exact opposite.
That’s so true. That's not always true.
