Structure
Comparative adjectives
comparative is the name for the grammar used
when comparing two things by using than.
- We use comparative adjectives to describe
people and things
- We use than when we want to compare one thing
with another
1- syllable adjectives: add - er to the adjective
- My brother is much shorter
than me.
2- syllable adjectives ending in -y:
change the - y to - ier
- She's looking happier today.
Other 2-syllable adjectives: use more with the unchanged
adjective
- Is there anything more boring
than reading about poem?
Adjectives with 3 or more syllables: use more with the
unchange dadjective
- My sister is much more
beautiful than me.

There are several reasons why the mountain lands
are so empty, and many of the people so poor.
1. The high of altitude
Some mountain people live in places where the
lower ground is between 11,483 – 14,764 feet (3,500-
4,500 m.) This is higher than many of the mountain
peaks in Europe. People from lowlands who come here
suffer from breathlessness, dizziness and sickness. This
is because there is much less oxygen
altitudes.

Many mountain lands are far from the plains
and the cities. Benefits such as electricity, modern
medicine and good schools have
not reached some places.
3. Mountain climates are harsh
Winter are very cold.
In all seasons, night temperatures
may be very low compared with the day.
The weather is also very unreliable.
4. Steep slopes and lacks of
level land
In many places, crops
can be grown only on terraces
built on steep mountain sides.
5. Lack of fertile soils
Very few mountain areas
have naturally fertile soils. When
the land is terraced, the soils have
to be improved by adding animal
and human manures.
