Planners and Designers know depressingly little about a city’s impacts on our mental health
Poor urban design can lead to people being less physically active
Specific aspects of urban life might be “depressogenic” (leading to poor mental health). People who
reside in cities are more likely to develop depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia than those living in the
countryside.
Issues related to the physical environment of cities – such as heat, noise, light, social isolation etc. may
double the risk of schizophrenia and increase the risks of anxiety disorders (by 21%), mood disorders
(by 39%)and depression (40%). The qualities of our surroundings have a profound effect on our
physical, spiritual, and emotional health.
Mental health is not just an individual issue, it affects the whole city. Economic costs associated with
mental illness amount to 4% of national GDP. Mental illness increases a city’s costs of health and social

• Talking more about the mental health challenges and issues and breaking the stigma around it. It is

• Do not hesitate to seek counselling or release the anxiety by sharing thoughts and internal issues.
• Institutes and organizations need to install mental health counselling units and provide counselling for
students and employees
• Revisioning of urban design and planning principles and guidelines and integration of happy elements
into building and design bye-laws, guidelines and plans.
