This document summarizes the work of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in setting the global mental health research agenda. It discusses NIMH's mission and strategic objectives, including strengthening the public health impact of research. It describes NIMH's offices focused on global mental health, women's mental health, and other areas. It also discusses how NIMH is collaborating with other organizations through initiatives like the Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health to identify root causes of mental illnesses and improve treatment worldwide. The goal is to build the evidence base and develop solutions to address the large unmet needs and treatment gaps for mental health globally.
This document discusses mental health as a global priority and outlines reasons for investing in mental healthcare. It finds that up to 10% of people worldwide are affected by mental health problems, which represent the 5th leading cause of disease burden globally when measured in disability-adjusted life years. However, most low- and middle-income countries allocate less than 2% of their health budgets to mental health. Compelling reasons to invest in mental healthcare include promoting human rights, reducing human and economic costs, and implementing cost-effective treatment solutions that already exist.
World Mental Health Day is observed annually on October 10th to raise awareness about mental health issues and mobilize efforts for mental health support globally. This year's theme focuses on "psychological first aid", referring to basic pragmatic support provided by those in helping roles like healthcare workers or emergency responders to people experiencing acute distress. The WHO's 2013-2020 Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan aims to strengthen leadership and services for mental health through community-based support, promotion, prevention strategies, and improved information systems.

This document discusses the relationship between cardiovascular disease and mental illnesses. It notes that depression is present in about 20% of outpatients with coronary heart disease and 33% of outpatients with congestive heart failure. Depression increases the risks of adverse cardiac events and mortality in patients with heart disease. It can also increase the risk of heart attack and coronary artery disease in healthy individuals. Depression is associated with unhealthy behaviors that interfere with heart disease treatment. Screening for depression is recommended for all cardiac patients.

It aims to integrate mental healthcare into primary care, provide tertiary treatment, and protect patient rights. Key components include training primary care workers, public education, early detection and treatment through district programs. improving health systems and healthcare for mental health_engaluckyrodrigo
This document outlines a strategy for improving mental health systems and services. It begins by noting that mental disorders affect 1 in 4 people worldwide but many countries have inadequate mental health systems. An integrated approach is needed to develop good quality mental health systems using primary care as a foundation. The strategy involves developing mental health policies and plans, enacting rights-based legislation, organizing services according to a pyramid model, planning and budgeting services, improving quality, training the workforce, developing information systems, ensuring access to medicines, and having sustainable financing. Following these recommendations can help countries establish comprehensive yet efficient mental health systems to improve outcomes and human rights for those suffering from mental disorders.
This document discusses the rise in global mental disorders and explores contributing factors. It defines key terms like mental health, mental disorders, and psychosocial support. It then explores factors contributing to rising mental illness, such as poverty, economic insecurity, violence, technology use, and lack of diagnostic capacity. It also examines challenges in providing scalable mental health services, such as cultural stigma, lack of infrastructure and funding, and inadequate data. Finally, it proposes that technology could help address issues like lack of treatment access, workforce shortages, and data gaps to better respond to rising global mental health needs.
This document outlines goals for transforming the mental health system in the United States. It discusses the large burden of mental illness through lost productivity, high economic costs, and prevalence of disorders. The document proposes 6 goals: 1) increasing understanding of mental health, 2) making the system consumer-driven, 3) eliminating disparities, 4) promoting early screening and treatment, 5) delivering evidence-based care, and 6) using technology to improve access and information. The transformation aims to make mental health services equally accessible and effective as physical health care.

The summary discusses research questions and methodology for a study on the Little India riot in Singapore that led the government to ban alcohol and shisha. The main research question asks about the contributing factors to the ban. The methodology will use both qualitative and quantitative data collection, with qualitative research allowing an in-depth understanding of social and cultural impacts through observation. Qualitative methods have the disadvantage of not being as comprehensive as quantitative methods.
Sungba Mental Health Organization aims to provide care and support for the mentally ill population in the Upper East Region of Ghana. They plan to open a drop-in center and overnight shelter to meet basic needs like food, clothing, and hygiene. Their needs assessment found 65 mentally ill individuals, many with co-occurring issues like substance abuse or mobility problems. The organization's objectives are to provide these services, develop community resources, and train peer counselors. They have requested a budget of 87,000 GHC to fund housing, transportation, supplies, and training to achieve their goals of caring for the mentally ill and reintegrating them into society.
There Is A 90% Probability That Your Son Is Pregnant: Predicting The Future ...Health Catalyst
Predictive: Relating to or having the effect of predicting an event or result. Analytics: The systematic computational analysis of data or statistics. Together they make up one of the most popular topics in healthcare today. But predictive analytics is a means to an ends, and there is little good in predicting an event or result without a strategy for acting upon that event, when it happens. If, as the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recently published, 80% of healthcare determinants fall outside of the healthcare delivery system as we traditionally define it, should we focus our predictive analytics on the traditional 20% of traditional healthcare delivery, or broaden our focus to the 80% that includes social and economic factors, physical environment, and lifestyle behaviors? What if our predictive models reveal to us that the highest risk variable to a patient’s length of life and quality of life is their economic status? Can an accountable care organization and patient centered medical home realistically do anything to reduce that risk, in reaction to the predictive model? Given the current availability and type of data in the healthcare ecosystem, and our organizational ability or inability to realistically intervene, where should we focus our predictive and interventional risk management strategies? There is enormous potential value in the application of predictive analytics to healthcare, but, in contrast to predicting the weather, credit risk, consumer purchasing habits, or college dropout rates, the data collection, and social and ethical complexities of applying predictive analytics in healthcare are significantly higher. This session will explore some of the less technical, more human interest and philosophical issues, associated with predictive analytics in healthcare, including the speaker’s experience prior to healthcare, in the US Air Force, National Security Agency, and manufacturing.
Over 34,000 people have shared experiences with Healthwatch about mental health services, with most feedback being negative. Common issues people report include struggling to find information about support, mental and physical health needs being treated separately, lack of consistent services, long wait times for support and diagnosis, lack of training for some professionals, and not feeling listened to. Healthwatch will examine support experiences at different life stages and for different communities to identify inequalities. Key areas for investigation are primary care, crisis care, community treatment and children's services based on volume of feedback. The aim is to improve support quality, consistency and outcomes based on what matters most to those with lived experience.
