POLYESTER [PE]

2. • Formed from dicarboxylic acid and a diol
• Made from an acid, benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (terephthalic acid)
and an alcohol, ethane-1,2-diol
• Known from its trivial name polyethylene terephthalate (PET)

3. • Polyester as PET is a hard, semi-crystalline and transparent, excellent
tensile strength, chemical resistance and light weight choice for rigid
packaging also good for molding and extrusion
• As elastomers used to generate elasticity and elastic food packaging
materials
• As polycarbonates they become non- crystalline, with high optical
clarity and toughness

4. ADVANTAGES:-
1. Tough and rigid
2. Processed by thermoplastic operations
3. Are recyclable and improved reusing abilities
4. Has low moisture absorption

5. DISADVANTAGES:-
• Subject to attack by acid and bases
• Low thermal resistance
• Poor solvent resistance

6. Applications in food processing industry
• Films are used for transparent pack of food for gift items
• PET bottles are used for carbonated beverages and other drinks
• Used in the form of baked good packaging and take-out containers
