Prof Anthony Rippon was born on 16 April 1959. Lives in Pennington, on South Africa’s
South Coast in the province of KwaZulu-Natal and has obtained extensive experience
over the years, in government, business, education and in the non-profit sector.
Between the years 1979 and 2019, he has worked in the above sectors and
volunteered to give direction to numerous Civil Society Organisations (CSOs). These
included Community Based Organisations (CBOs) focusing in the business, transport,
environmental, tourism, and health environments and finally as strategic advisor for
profit and non-profit organisations in the arts and culture environment.
His qualifications include a D. Com (Strategic Management) focusing on a strategic
approach for facilitating community development in South Africa, M. Com (Strategic
Management) specialising in the non-profit sector, B. Com Hons. (Marketing
Management) and B. Com (Industrial Psychology). He studied mostly part-time, whilst
working in a variety of industries in the small, medium and corporate environments
and completed most of his studies at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) between the
years 1987 and 2005 and has published a number of articles in various journals.
His own businesses ranged from taking over a going concern (coffee shop), setting up
a biltong chain of franchise outlets, together with a consortium a property development
and has initiated business, marketing and management consultancies.
He has over the years developed a passion for the environment and tourism, whilst
continuing to pursue his interests and further research in strategic community
development and ‘edutainment’ (education through entertainment). He is a semi-
retired strategist, consultant, coach, academic and musician, currently strategic
advisor for various organisations in the arts and culture environment.
Finally, he enjoys playing guitar and singing, as well as, being part of an environmental
theatre production, from time to time, titled: Dim-Dep “Faces of Environmental
Success”. Developed and produced by Mr Atlas Philani Duma, founder of Sagiya
Foundation (refer to www.sagiyafoundation.co.za). Furthermore, he was awarded for
his contributions made in the South African arts and culture industry in 2016 by the
UKZNs Centre for Jazz and Popular Music in collaboration with Sagiya Foundation.
Together with Atlas, they have a common vision, mission, with objectives to develop
strategies that educate through entertainment (‘edutainment’), which focuses on the
highlighting of environmental issues of concern in communities. These to motivate,
and uplift citizens to clean-up and care for their Communities, City and, Country.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, and whilst the current lockdown and subsequent
waves are still in force, he continued to compose, adapt, arrange and promote ‘world
music’ songs specially produced for the virtual jazz concert hosted in November 2020,
which are still being streamed ‘live’ globally through the portal www.skyroomlive.com
