5S is a system for organizing and standardizing the workplace. It consists of five Japanese words beginning with S: seiri (sorting), seiton (systematic arrangement), seiso (shining), seiketsu (standardization), and shitsuke (sustaining the discipline). Implementing 5S involves sorting through all items in a workplace to identify unnecessary items, arranging the necessary items in an efficient manner, cleaning and standardizing the workplace, and sustaining the new systems through self-discipline. The goals of 5S are to improve safety, quality and productivity by eliminating waste from the workplace.
