Provide at least two effective and at least two ineffective interpersonal or
communication skills shown in the exchange. Explain why each was effective
and/ or ineffective.
Interpersonal communication skills are the traits that enable an individual to
interact and communicate with other people. These skills help to communicate and
build relationships with others. Active listening is one of the effective interpersonal
communication skill that the interviewer has. The interviewer is keenly listening to
John purposely to gather information while effectively engaging him. The
interviewer does not show any kind of distracting behavior during the interview, he
is prompting John with follow up questions. Secondly, the interviewer is patient
with John. Regardless of John’s misplaced vocabularies, the interviewer remains
calm and does not interrupt his speech. They are both observing turn-taking rules
in this conversation. Effective interpersonal communication skills are vividly
brought out by the interviewer and thus interaction that leads to communication is
achieved.
On the other hand, ineffective communication skills are brought out by John who
lacks conciseness and clarity of what he is saying. John is seen adding multiple
filler words while speaking. Fillers in communication often reduces effectiveness
of what is being said. Furthermore, his choice of vocabulary tend to somehow
distract the listener, for example when he says that the trip caught him
“underwears” instead of unaware. The misplaced vocabularies makes the
interviewer to avoid direct eye contact an aspect that importantly makes any
communication effective.
Describe how culture influences communication strategies within the exchange.
One’s cultural background plays a major role in everyday communication. During
interactions there is a grave need to convey information and interpret what is being
conveyed. The characteristics of a culture influences communication. For example,
in the exchange, it is evident that John’s culture greatly differs from his
interviewer’s culture because John descends from Africa while his interviewer is
from European descent. As such, differences in culture allows John to code switch
and code mix within his speech, a strategy that influences communication. The use
of words such as “kabisa” may tend to leave the interviewer confused because he
2. may not have the understanding of that term. Not being a native English speaker
influences communication strategy whereby John cannot help avoid the use of his
local dialect. At the end of his speech, John uses his local dialect which may be
seem offensive to his interviewer or even the listeners.
Additionally, the medium of communication in the exchange has been influenced
by the differences in the cultures of John and his interviewer. The choice of
medium used in the exchange has cultural overtones. Normally, industrialized
nations rely on electronic technology as their mode of communication. In the case
of the above exchange, communication is done on face to face mode because the
interviewee comes from a culture that is of low context.
Detail how nonverbal cues correlate with the perceptions of the speakers.
Non-verbal cues normally entail the use of body language. Eye contact, facial
expressions and gesture are actions that are important when speaking to other
people. People usually use nonverbal cues to fully make meaning of what is being
said and will often make a connection or withdraw from the conversation based on
the cues. John’s interviewer is seen nodding his head whenever John is stuck, a cue
that helps to reassure John that the interviewer does understand what he is about to
say. On the other hand John can be perceived as not committed to the conversation
because he does not maintain eye contact with his interviewer. He majorly employs
the use of gesture to make meaning of some of the vocabularies he cannot
articulate.
Explain two areas of interpersonal communication AND two nonverbal cues that
you would like to improve. Detail how these improvements could lead to a
positive perception of you as a leader.
If John could avoid the usage of big words and the use of local dialect,
communication would have been effective. For instance when he says “he is a
diarrhea farmer”, this could have been avoided by just saying he is a farmer.
Maintaining eye contact and proper use of gesture would have otherwise brought
out the speaker as one who is confident.
