Nurse practitioners can benefit financially by contracting with managed care organizations, but many MCOs do not view NPs as primary care providers. Only 62.5% of Medicaid MCOs contract with NPs as primary care physicians. Contracting barriers prevent NPs from utilizing their full scope of practice and addressing primary care physician shortages. As healthcare needs rise under the Affordable Care Act, overcoming these barriers could allow NPs to fill an important gap by 2020. However, state regulations still define NPs' practice authority differently.

Nurse practitioners can benefit from insurance plans if they can successfully navigate
changing healthcare systems. This necessitates familiarity with Medicare waivers and state
healthcare regulations. Nurse practitioners' capacity to establish provider positions is further
enhanced by understanding credentialing and pay systems in managed care (Cohen et al., n.d.).
Nurse practitioners have the opportunity to improve their involvement as primary and specialty
care providers in traditional and atypical settings because of the convergence among registered
nurse practice and defined contribution priorities.
Most managed care organizations (MCOs) first expanded their nurse practitioner
contracting when the Affordable Care Act. This pattern has not persisted, thereby jeopardizing
the Affordable Care Act's efforts to increase primary care physician staffing. In this survey,
about a quarter of the participating MCOs did not engage with NPs as primary care physicians.
Only 62.5 percent of responding MCOs providing Medicaid products confirmed partnering with
NPs as primary care physicians, implying that low-income patients will be disproportionately
impacted. The research findings have diverse geography implications, implying that the choices
to deal with NPS are decided on an individualized level, not impacted by the number of
innovations covered or accessible primary care doctors (Bellot et al., 2017).
There is no progress toward contracting nurse practitioners with managed care
companies, and hence a significant hurdle. The Affordable Care Act's purpose was to equip
Americans with insurance coverage to optimize primary healthcare capacity. As a result, the
need for primary care physicians will naturally rise (PCPs). Nurse techniques to help address this
gap if they are given a chance to perform their entire field of expertise, expected to reach 45,000

by 2020. The ACA does not tackle the differences in state rules about the NP's realm of
experience, and state legislators have the authority to define the qualifications for a PCP
(Harkless et.al).
