It was a daunting task coming to school as second time. Despite everyone appearing
young, they knew what they came do about their lives. Still on the fence, I was wondering what I
was going to do with my future by making the right choice in my program. Having made my
choice to be professor, I was task with finding a program that will enable me qualify in the
choice. Following this track led to m joining Cal State LA for the program that was well suited
for a student like me. There were great teachers who led the program. The teachers enabled me
to explore things unknown to me and some aspect I thought I had mastery of became more
elaborated than my previous experience. In my study time as English major student, I have
honed my program research and writing skills and my teachers have complemented me on my
command of language. This proves that Cal State LA has excellent and valuable knowledge that
the teachers are impacting on to the learners. This is the reason why I want to give myself into a
deep learning in my program and I have decide that Cal State LA can give me that. Currently,
work on a number of project, and research in my program and I work closely with my classmates
who boost my knowledge. I have enjoyed the program even though it requires a little more
efforts than I initially thought it would need. The teachers provide comfortable environment

which make it easy to learn. I felt respected and thus enable me to open my thoughts and interact
with my teacher freely. The foundation of friendship and vigorous teaching led me to the
understanding of the skills and competencies that English major program required.

Throughout the time I have spent in Cal State LA, I have acquired varied sets of kills that
will not only prepare me for a better future but are a vital aspect in my program that authenticates
my abilities in English major and pave a clear path for me to be a professor. I have acquired the
skill of literary coverage. The skill is important to me because it enable me to understanding a
text, relationship between a texts, aspects of a test such close reading, awareness of letter and
sound, and compressive skills. For instance, through understanding of the relationship between a
texts, I have incarnated that a texts have cultural ties to one another such as the paper on Fredrick
Douglass and Olaudah Equiano that I have provided for my text. They also have similarities of
experiences that these men underwent in their different paths that they took after hardship.
I have also acquires the skill of literary analysis. The class was being handled by Dr.
Perry, a teacher who opened the sinus of my knowledge in literary analysis and made me rethink
further about the text. While reading âSulaâ I came to understand that after reading a texts, one is
required to go beyond the texts itself and look at it as the mirror of the society by putting oneself
in the sport to judge every action. This is referred in my essay regarding of good vases evil. Ties
to one another such as the paper on Fredrick Douglass and Olaudah Equiano that I have provided
for my text. Character whose portrayal in the texts were negative are handed a bad name. One
can only acquire this knowledge through literary analysis. The literary skills enabled me to
reflect on the certain societal aspect and how the author perceive them and thus I realized that for

one to analyzed the text, one must not tie the author and texts together but should view the text as
a complete whole that communicate to the public. Also is was important to relate the application
literary decides that anchored the themes and cohesion of the texts. The illustration by Dr. Perry
enable me to successfully involve my natural art of expression to analysize the intention of a
texts, whether to invoke empathy, entrain, or inspire.
Steve Jones class enable me to acquire skills of theory and critical perspective. Ingrained
in this class were psychoanalysis an epistemology. Through a compelling research in the topic, I
became confident, that I was able to write an essay on the psychological perspective, in
particular, Beowulf the hero in this artifact. The artifact achieve this since it dealt with theory of
psychology and I was able to get a new perspective by seeing the text as talking of Beowulf ego
and not the monster in the poem. It is important to note that the critical and theoretical
perspective I learn in this class enabled me to develop reflective thinking about texts and
interpret it based on psychological and theoretical perspectives.
Linguistic artifacts is the application of language following the rules of grammar. In this
regard, I used case study of Genieâs childhood speaking on she was hampered by terrible
upbringing. Based on the paper, it is important to acquires the basic skills of language for a
proper communication, without which, a child may find challenges when thy will be old enough
to speak.
Rhetoric is the application of rhetorical devices to present an argument or persuasion with
the main goal of changing people perspective. For instance ads are rhetorical devices that are
intended to persuade peopleâs thoughts toward an advert. For in this course, I decided to use ads
from different nations to explain how various countries use ads differently. I have acquired
knowledge on the application of rhetorical elements and how they are used to evoke responses in

the listener, viewers or audience and how they seek to make argument or persuasion more
compelling. Aside, I could relate this topic with my previous class on textual analysis skills. in
this regard, using rhetorical analysis especially on textual analysis was important because it
reinforced my understanding textual presentation and how the writer or the author can used
rhetorical devices to reinforced the theme in their texts. There are a lot of importance why
student and especially an English major like me should understand the role of persuasive skills.
Not only is this skills important for the classroom and textual analysis, the kills is important for
professional development. Thus persuasive skills and rhetorical devices plays a significant role
in our everyday life as student especially English major like me whose entire profession lies
deeply on writing, grammar analysis and literary analysis that requires persuasive skills to
convince the reader. For this reasons, I thank Cal States LAâs teacher for making me understand
this vital skill in writing.
Discuss important/effective elements of the program and ineffective/insufficient aspects of the
program
Due to the facultyâs ability to understand the need of student, the presentation of the
program was amazing and easy to relate with. Not only is the program anchored through a
deeper researcher with excellent reading material for a further researcher, there were, many
knowledgeable teachers who are ready to assist leaners whenever they seek them.
Unfortunately, the outbreak of COVID-19 halted the program for a while however, we had a face
to face teaching with our teachers. I love the swift response of the faculty in particular by
availing an online library for us to study while under lockdown. Despite the outbreak of the
pandemic that led to the closing of school, I love the quick response of the school by enabling an
online learning with ready teachers who were quick to adjust to the condition presented by the

unprecedented virus. I thank the program would have be more amazing were it not for the
outbreak of the virus and slow content coverage.
