Socialization
Socialization
 Socialization is knowing a culture and being
able to live in it. It is also a process wherein
individuals learn and get new ideas from
others surrounding them. It occurs due to
social interaction
Nature and Nurture
 The process of socialization involves both.
 Nature is the human genetic makeup or
biological inheritance.
 Nurture is the environment or the
interaction experiences that make up every
individual’s life.
Primary Groups
 A primary group is a social group
characterized by face-to-face contact and
strong emotional ties among its members.
 Families are key example.
Other Agents of Socialization
 School
 Has a mandate to socialize children to societal
norms
 Functionalists indicate schools fulfill function of
socialization leading to social cohesion
 Conflict theorists suggest schools reinforce
divisive aspects of social classes (e.g. Teachers
praising boys may reinforce sexist attitudes)

 Two or more persons or groups oppose
each other to achieve a goal than only one
can attain.
 Follows accepted rules
 Positive but can lead to conflict
Conflict
 Deliberate attempt to control by force,
oppose or harm the will of another person.
Cooperation
 Occurs when two or more persons or
groups work together to achieve a goal that
will benefit many people
 Can be used with other forms of interaction
 Get things done.
Accommodation
 State of balance between cooperation and
conflict
 Give up and taking a little
 4 Major types of Accommodation
Compromise
 Two parties both give up something to
come up to an agreement
Truce:
 Brings a halt to the conflict until
compromised is reached (Stayed)
Mediation
 A third party act as a counselor in helping
two parties reach an agreement
 Arbitration
 A third party makes a decision that is
binding on all parties
