3. NATIONAL STADIUM BEIJING
INTRODUCTION:
• Location: Beijing, China
• Architect: Herzog & de Meuron Architects AG, Arup Sport and the
China Architecture Design & Research Group
• Demonstrated system: Rigid Frame
• Total site area: 204.278 m
• Gross Floor Area:258,000 sq. ft.
4. DETAILS OF BUILDING
• Exterior structure : 36 KM of unwrapped steel
• Combined weight : 45,000 tons
• Stadium length : 330 meters
• Width : 220 meters
• Height: 69 meters
• Largest steel truss span : 343m / 375 yds.
• Steel roof : 320m long 297m wide
6. STRUCTURE
• Bird’s Nest
Irregular patterns follows strict geometric rules
• There are two independent structures
Outer structure Inner structure
Steel frame Concrete
Truss columns Seating bowl
Interlocked element Precast reinforced
Support each other Concrete section
7. ROOF STRUCTURE
• 32 ft. 8 inches deep horizontal trusses that span the roof
• The roof truss is composed of top and bottom booms with diagonal
struts.
• Deep roof trusses follow a diagonal path crisscrossing each other
• The roof is supported by cantilever trusses
• Lattice trusses
8. TRUSS-COLUMNS:
• 24 truss-columns of pre-cast steel
• 224 ft. 7 inches height
• the major load-bearing component of the roof structure
• maximum weight of a single column is 500 tons.
• The mega column has three main booms–one vertical and two inclined
• Tied together by diagonal elements forming a three dimensional truss system.
9. Load Distribution
Horizontal loads:
• The steel structure itself must resists its own load
• Plinth type of foundation for evenly distribution of load.
• The loads at each intersection are split between
the members and transferred downwards.
10. Load Distribution
Lateral Loads:
• The massive steel structure resists the lateral loads in
a similar manner as the horizontal ones
• Transferred to the ground by the lattice of steel.
• Lattice also provides natural ventilation in the
building.
11. Load Distribution
Earthquake loads:
• Steel has high modulus of elasticity as compared to
the concrete.
• Structure is designed to withstand earthquakes rated
at 8.0 on Ritcher Scale.

12. BENEIFETS OF TRUSS COLUMN
Structural design
• It gives visual effect
• It provides comfortable seating & view to all
spectators
Roof
• Provide with cantilever trusses which shading the
seating
