11. HeToilets
The size of the toilet should be 1.8m x
1.9m. This includes the water closet and
the urinal.
12. Parking requirement: 1/100sq.m of carpet area
25% of above parking to be provided additionally for 2
wheeler parking.
Each of street parking space provided for parking motor
cars should be not less than 15sq.m area (5.5 m x 2.7m)
and for scooters and cycles the area of each parking space
provided shall be not less than 3sq.m and 1.5sq.m
respectively
KMBR prescribes 1 parking unit per 100sq.m of carpet
area, i.e. for 12540sq.m carpet area, 125 parking units are
required as far as the old block is considered. But the new
block carpet area is 7970sq.m so an additional parking
space for 80 more cars…

15. HVAC
Function:
• provide clean, comfortable and controlled environment to
minimize risk of transmission of airborne pathogens
• controls air quality and air movement. restriction of air
movement through and between departments.
• provides different types of temperature and humidity to
various areas
• ensures operation of equipments by providing an
appropriate environmental temperature, humidity and
absence of dust.
16. Components of an HVAC
• OUTSIDE AIR INLET OR INTAKE FILTERS
• HUMIDITY MODIFICATION MECHANISM
• HEATING AND COOLING EQUIPMENT
• FANS
• DUCTWORK
• AIR EXHAUST
• DIFFUSERS OR GRILLS FOR PROPER
DISTRIBUTION OF AIR
• CONTROLS AND SWITCHES
• ELECTRICITY SUPPLY SYSTEM WITH GEN SET
BACKUP
17.
18. • Prevention through proper design and construction
• Provisions for
– Smoke/fire detection
– Restriction of spread
– Extinguishment systems
• Evacuation of buildings: Horizontal and vertical evacuation to be
planned
Preventive measures
• Non combustible material to be used in load bearing elements, stair ways
and corridors
• Proper plug and sockets to be provided for heating appliances
• Electrical wiring laid in separate duct and sealed at every alternate floor with
non combustible materials.
• Good house keeping and proper waste disposal
• Proper storage conditions, and segregation of combustible and explosive
materials like gases, chemicals and x ray films
Fundamental philosophies of fire safety
19. FIRE DETECTORS
CONTROL PANELS PLACED IN
SECURITY OFFICE WHICH NOTIFY
SECURITY PERSONELSL
Panel to detect activation
of sprinkler system
monitored zone wise
Panel to detect activation
of smoke alarms
monitored zone wise
20. Restriction of spread
• Unit concept of construction
• Min fire resistance offered by structural frame: 2 hrs
• Compartmentalization of building:
smoke stop doors of minimum half an hour fire resistance to be interposed between
galleries, lobbies and between wards. Single swing type opening in the direction of
escape
• AC ducts provided with dampers/stoppers. Dampers installed in inlet duct at ac plant
room and fire separation walls provided wherever ducts enter the vertical shafts.
• At least two areas of refuge to be provided in each horizontal plane.
• Fire and smoke should not go up and down the level of origin. Vulnerable spots: stair
ways, lifts, chutes, shafts etc. RCC floors resistance:2 hrs
• Life risk areas( wards, OT etc) should be segregated from high hazard service areas
(boiler room, laundry, gas supply etc)
Exits:
– min 2 on each floor with area more than 500sq.m.
– Corridor: 2.4m wide, well lit with signage, clear of obstructions
– Door exits lead directly to outside, interior stairway, exterior stairs, horizontal
exits, ramps, or exit passage ways.
– door: min 2m high and 2m wide, open able from both sides.
• For buildings more than 24m height, refuge area of 15sq.m or .3sqm per person to
accommodate occupants of 2 consecutive floors, whichever is higher should be
provided.
21. • Wet riser systems of pipes 150
mm dia located within lobby,
approach staircase or within
staircase where there is no
lobby.
– One riser for floor area
1000sq.m
– Riser passes from ground
floor to top floor and each
floor should be bound with
one landing valve and two
oulets for connecting to
hose reels
– Capacity of Under tank for
wet riser:
• 50,000 for hospitals of
3 levels
• 1 lakh L for hospitals
with height 15m- 24m
• 1.5 lakh L for hospitals
with height 24m- 30m
22. Fire fighting equipments
• Fire extinguishers at strategic points
• Automatic sprinkler extinguisher systems
• Fire detection systems where equipment may get damaged by water
• Separate water supply
Safe fire exits
• Wards: travel distance from the
farthest point in the ward room to
the exit door should be 30m or
less. Where this cannot be ensures
2 or more doors should be
provided
23. • Corridors and escape routes to be provided with recessed lights in the wall
.5m above the floor with power supply from a separate emergency source.
• At least one enclosed staircase from each fire protected zone to the ground
floor outside the building.
• Children’s ward, maternity ward, ICU’s, fracture treatment wards, where every
patient needs assistance could be located on ground floor or first floor so
efforts to save them in an emergency is less.
• Since vertical transportation is relatively more difficult arrangements should be
made so that patients can be transferred from one section to another section
of the same floor separated by a fire protection zone.
