Like most of novel Robinson Crusoe is based on fact.
• A man by the name of Alexander Kirk had spent many
years on a lonely island, all by himself, before returning
to Scotland.
• This inspired Defoe’s imagination. Little was known
about tropical islands in those days, despite that Daniel
Defoe was able to give a detailed picture of life on
tropical island
• Crusoe was born in 1632 in the city of york, of a good
family.
• His father had beame very wealthy as merchant
• He married a girl whose family name was Robinson
• His father’s name was Kreutznaer, but called
themselves crusoe
• So his name became Robinson crusoe
• His father gave him good education and
wanted to became a lawyer
• But crusoe’s heart was set on going to sea .
• His father warned him of the dangers of the life at sea
and asked him not to think of leaving home anymore,
but one day he run away from his home and thus his
journey begins.
• Robinson crusoe goes to sea- storm in the sea
He remembers his fathers words in sigh “the boy might
be happy if he would stay at home, but if he goes
abroad, he will be the most miserable wretch that was
ever born.
• in storm he thinks that, “if ever I got once my foot
upon dry land again, I would go directly home to my
father and never set into a ship again while I lived”
• But then he continues his journey
• Robinson crusoe becomes merchant and is captured.
• Attack by pirates
• Many years of slavery
• Crusoe ran away with a boy names Xury
• They rescued by merchant ship
• Crusoe sold faithful Xury
• Robinson crusoe is shipwreched
• Crusoe builds his house
• He finds many things from the ship
like pens, ink, paper, compass, charts
and Bible
• He was able to creat light which helps
him to write Diary
• Robinson crusoe begins to explore his island.
• He finds fruits, rivers, valley, and garden in which he
planted fruits and flowers
• Thus on island he spent two years without any sign of
rescuer
• Harvest of crop
• Making of pots and jars to store food and water
• He tries his skills as a tailor, prepares hat, trousers and
waistcoat from goat skin.
• He first time feels need of companion and remembers
Xury
• A strange Discovery-a print of man’s bare foot in the
sand
• Crusoe’s fear of losing
• But no one comes…..
• Crusoe called him Friday after the day on which he
rescued.
• He taught him to say ‘MASTER’
• Master slave relation in novel
• Colonialism
• Imperialism
• “WHITE MAN’S BURDEN’’
• Friday’s father rescued from canibals
• A ship Arrives at the island
• Friendship with english captain who was enslaved.
• crusoe:- “if I save you, are you willing to my conditions?
I have two…
• Crusoe called him Friday after the day on which he
rescued.
• He taught him to say ‘MASTER’
• Master slave relation in novel
• Colonialism
• Imperialism
• “WHITE MAN’S BURDEN’’
• The first is that while you stay on this island you will
obey any order that I give you.
• If I give you a gun, you will return it to me and to do
no harm either to me or to my possessions.
• The second condition is that if you recover your ship
you will take me and my servant, Friday, to England.”
• The fight at the roundhouse and they win
• Crusoe to prisoners..
• “I AM THE GOVERNOR OF THIS ISLAND”
• As the governor of this island I have power to hang
you. Have you any thing to say as to why I should
not?(this shows his possessive nature
• Thus he left the island on nineteenth of December in
the year 1686
• The ship reached England after long voyage on the
11th June 1687
• By the grace of God I was home once more after the
thirty five years.
