minority of foreign invaders . The Fundamental decisions people
are made the implemented by colonial rulers in pursuit of
interests that are often defined in a distant metropolis.
Rejecting cultural compromises with colonized population.
The colonizers are convinced of their own superiority and their
Ordained mandate to rule”
→ other :-
“ The policy and practice of power in extending control
over weaker people and areas”
-Define the English dictionary

5. Robinson Crusoe- Englishman, Whiteman
Friday – Slave of Crusoe’s, Nonwhite man
Xury – Slave of Crusoe’s ,Non Whiteman
Robinson Crusoe - Prototype of the colonial
novel
Robinson Crusoe – Adventurous novel
Theme of solitary human existence
During 18th Century most of countries under
the Europeans.
The novels of this time also touched the
concept of colonialism.
6. Crusoe lived 8 and 20 year alone Island on
the cost of America.
Crusoe remain isolated on the island.
Resident ,raised got and parrot.
Friday and xury - silenced – mute.
Crusoe chooses name Friday-from Western
culture.
Created a new identity for servant.
“ A Tolerable good Taylor ”
Combined the theme of mastery
Specially relation between Crusoe-Friday
First word teaches ‘Friday’- ‘Master’ then
‘Master’-’Friday
7. Colonialism is also seen in how Crusoe treats Friday once they
leaves the Island.
Crusoe’s answer to prayer , one who he look to like a son, he
“civilized” so that he can become a part of the great land of
England, but not as a brother or friend-only as servant.
“my man Friday” indicated a sense of servility on Friday's part,
and he was technically not a slave.
…my man Friday
accompanying me very
honestly in all these ramblings,
and proving a most faithful
servant upon all occasion.
8. Colonialism is in the story after Crusoe leaves the Island – for
while he is there, he realizes that the things he valued in
England, Brazil and on his travels e revolved around money.
He has no need money on the Island, but he does value
materials that will aid in his survival-such as gunpowder and
fresh water .
when I took leave of this
Island , I carried….the money I
formerly mentioned, which
had lain by me so long and useless
that it was grown rusty or
tarnished, and could hardly
pass for silver….
9. Crusoe “ Owns” the Island instructs those living
there just as if he were “Governor” or political leader –
just as any British colony would be governor.
Defoe shows two interesting features in the novel.
1 ) Colonialism originated in fantasy of power and
control.
2 ) The European worked at making the dream/
Fantasy real.
→ In the novel Robinson Imagines himself
Governor, Rural, Authority and sole power.
