Genres refer to different types or classes of texts and media platforms that share common themes or conventions. While genres provide structure, Daniel Chandler argues they can be too restrictive by making narratives and endings too predictable. Steve Neal believes genres require both repetition of conventions and some differences to avoid being too predictable and unengaging for audiences. In his music video, the author created diversity by avoiding typical male gazes and focusing on the song's themes of money and fame, which can appeal to all genders, while also including a broken character relating to conventions of failure and depression in pop music genres.
2. What is genre?
◦ The word ‘genre’ comes from the Latin word ‘kind’ or ‘class’ and it refers to the different types
of texts or media platforms, it can also represent different themes and categories within genres
such as money in rap. Genres can also mix in media as a film or song may feature conventions of
other genres, for example, A film could consist of action and comedy which is common. Some
argue that there are genres with no name and It depends on the diversity of society.
3. Daniel Chandler
◦ Daniel Chandler suggests that genre is too restricting, this means that genres conventions are
too predictable and its limited conventions lead to failure to explore new narratives and versatile
endings, For example, actions films conventions usually end with the protagonist winning the
battle against the enemy, this is common and although there may be twists and turns during the
storyline, it is still predictable.
4. Steve Neal
◦ Steve Neal argues that genres are instances of repetition and difference, he also states that
difference is essential to genres and repetition doesn’t attract audience members as it is
predictable and unengaging. Texts should exhibit conventions of more than one genre to add
diversity.
5. Conventions
◦ In my music video, I created diversity by not creating the typical male gaze into my music video
as I believed this wouldn’t appeal to women of my target audience as they feel as objects when
women are displayed in this nature. I strictly stuck to the songs theme of money and fame which
can appeal to all genders. I also added a broken character at the beginning of my music video
which relates to the pop genre as most conventions are off failure and depression which links to
my protagonist in the beginning of my music video.
