WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT1: PROCESS ESSAY

SUBMISSIONDATE: 11th

2. (Pre-writing)
1st paragraph
- I was given a task by my lecturer, Ms Cassandra Rashika Wijesuria to write a process
essay about “how to sketch”.
-The definition of sketching is a rough draft of what you are actually going to draw.
Sketching is not like drawing. When it comes to drawing, measurements, lightings and
shadows all have to be accurate and precise. Sketching can be messy and accurate, as
long as it looks like the actual product or represents whatever you are going to be
drawing, it also serves as a guideline.
- Sketching can be very useful for me in my respective course because it will definitely
help me in my creative thinking class and drawing class. In creative thinking class, we
are assigned to draw our own superhero so sketching a kitchen utensil is a great start to
help me feel confident in sketching or drawing different object from other classes.
-My process essay is about sketching a kitchen utensil, which is an egg slicer.
2nd paragraph
- The kitchen utensil I choose is an egg slicer.
- 5 senses
- Sight - It has green plastic acting as a body to the contraption, metal strings for
slicing the egg and a base shape of an egg to place the egg on top to slice.
- Hearing - Clicking sound is produced when plastic is hit onto the base and the sound
of metal friction.
- Touch – It feels like plastic and the metal part feels like you are touching a string.
- Smell – It smells like old cabinet. After an egg is slice, it smells like an egg.
- Taste – It is tasteless.
- An egg slicer is actually a very unique piece of contraption, it helps to slice hard-boiled
egg into neat little slice of eggs making it easier to decorate your food. If you are having
hard-boiled egg every morning for your sandwich, you can use an egg slicer to slice
your hard-boiled egg into pieces and place them on top of your sandwich.
- I choose this piece of contraption because it stands out the most in my kitchen when I
was searching for a kitchen utensil. The egg slicer caught my eye because it is unique
and it saves time. It can slice out 6 to 8 slices of eggs with just one snap. When using a
knife, you might take 8-10 seconds to slice out 6 to 8 slices of eggs but when using an
egg slicer, you can save 8-10 times the time to get the same amount of sliced eggs.
3. 3rd paragraph
-Firstly, I used a mechanical pencil to draw the outline of the egg slicer. I choose to use
a light colour mechanical pencil so I can erase my mistake easily and there will not be
any dark stain. When I am done sketching the outline of the egg slicer, I used a dark
colour lead pencil to darken the outline of the sketch.
-A ruler is used at some part of the sketch for minor measurement
-I always clear my workspace to begin with anything I am about to start because I get
paranoid when my workspace is dirty or messy. When I am done clearing up my
workspace, only then I will get a peace of mind to start sketching or doing my work.
4th paragraph
-After I am done with the outline of the egg slicer, I used a light colour lead to shade the
body of the contraption representing the green plastic. Places that have not been
shaded is just an empty space. Dark shaded part of the sketch represent the part of the
contraption where you place the egg for slicing
-There is no lighting and contouring done in this sketch
- When mistakes were made, I used an eraser to erase the errors and sketch the outline
again. When the measurements are wrong, I have to erase and recalculate the
measurements using a ruler.
5th paragraph
- It took me 45 minutes to complete the sketching because I kept erasing and redo the
outline of the egg slicer until I am satisfied.
- I am not good at drawing, I did not take art lessons when I was a kid. I do not have
good grades in my art exams during primary school and high school. Thus, choosing an
egg slicer as an object to sketch is a slightly big challenge for me because I have a
minimal background in art. Overall, I am satisfied with my sketch.
- I find sketching very fun because I can express myself through art and I will definitely
do this again.
4. (Essay)
I was given a task by my lecturer, Ms Cassandra Rashika Wijesuria to write a
process essay about “how to sketch”. The definition of sketching is a rough draft of what
you are actually going to draw. Sketching is not like drawing. When it comes to drawing,

draw our own superhero so sketching a kitchen utensil is a great start to help me feel
confident in sketching or drawing different object from other classes. My process essay
is about sketching a kitchen utensil which is an egg slicer.
The kitchen utensil I choose is an egg slicer. The five senses used to describe
the egg slicer is sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. Sight, it has green plastic acting
as a body to the contraption, metal strings for slicing the egg and a base shape of an
egg to place the egg on top to slice. Hearing, clicking sound is produced when plastic is
hit onto the base and the sound of metal friction. Smell, it smells like old cabinet. After
an egg is sliced, it smells like an egg. Touch, it feels like plastic and the metal part feels
like you are touching a string. Lastly, taste, it is tasteless. An egg slicer is actually a very

making it easier to decorate your food. If you are having hard-boiled egg every morning
for your sandwich, you can use an egg slicer to slice your hard-boiled egg into pieces

stands out the most in my kitchen when I was searching for a kitchen utensil. The egg
slicer caught my eye because it is unique and it saves time. It can slice out 6 to 8 slices
of eggs with just one snap. When using a knife, you might take 8-10 seconds to slice
out 6 to 8 slices of eggs but when using an egg slicer, you can save 8-10 times the time
to get the same amount of sliced eggs.
Firstly to sketch an egg slicer, I used a mechanical pencil to draw the outline of
the egg slicer. I choose to use a light colour mechanical pencil so I can erase my
mistake easily and there will not be any dark stain. When I am done sketching the
outline of the egg slicer, I used a dark colour lead pencil to darken the outline of the

clear my workspace to begin with anything I am about to start because I get paranoid
when my workspace is dirty or messy. When I am done clearing up my workspace, only
then I will have a peace of mind to start sketching or doing my work.
5. After I am done with the outline of the egg slicer, I used a light colour lead to
shade the body of the contraption representing the green plastic. Places that have not
been shaded is just an empty space. Dark shaded part of the sketch represent the part
of the contraption where you place the egg for slicing. There is no lighting and
contouring done in this sketch. When mistakes were made, I used an eraser to erase
the errors and sketch the outline again. When the measurements are wrong, I have to
erase and recalculate the measurements using a ruler.
It took me 45 minutes to complete the sketching because I kept erasing and redo
the outline of the egg slicer until I am satisfied. I am not good at drawing, I did not take
