2. Historical Background of Ruins of St Paul, Church of Master Dei
Historically, the Church of Master Dei was built between 1602 and 1640 adjoining the
Jesuit College of St. Paul that was the first Western college in the Far East. The church was
made of wood, and it was brilliantly decorated and furnished. The facade of carved stone
was built by Japanese Christian craftsmen who were refugees after the religion was wiped
out in Japan. It was built under the direction of Italian Jesuit Carlo Spinola. It was
abandoned after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1762 and a military battalion was stationed
there. In 1835 a fire erupted in the kitchen of the barracks, destroying everything, except
what you see today.
