2. Lighting and color
The lighting effect from this scene is used from one of the girls
camera night vision recording. Most cameras have this option
that you can use when in a setting that’s dark and light is no
where to be seen. The use of the night vision is effective in this
scene as it shows how dark the location. Also it creates a scary
effect as it only consist a color of black and green and no other
colors which adds a sense of mystery/darkness to the place and
makes the place a whole lot scarier. Beside this certain
characters look more frightening such as the crawler behind
Beth. If it was in a color the character wouldn't’t look as
menacing.
In the end of the clip one of the girls happen
to be using a flare. The use of the flare lights
up the cave and its not as dark as it was
earlier in the clip.
3. Costume, Hair/Make-up
The costume the actors wear are rock-climbing
gear/sports gear. This costume have been used
purposely as it fits into what the girls are doing in
this cave which is adventuring the cave and
climbing in it. Beside this the girls aren't wearing
any make up, as they're are rock
climbing/adventuring the cave so it wouldn't’t
make sense for them to. Beside this with the girls
not wearing any make up this is effective in giving
the effect of making the girls look dirty/grimy.
Beside make up the use of prosthetics
are used. Prosthetics are used in the
making of the crawlers and the bone
that sticks out of holly's leg. The use of
the prosthetics are effective as for the
crawlers aspect it makes the crawlers
appear as creepy/inhuman and with
the bone sticking out of holly's leg it
shows that holly is in a critical
condition and to the audience it makes
us feel queasy as we begin to imagine
how much pain holly is in.
4. Location
The location of the descent in this clip is
filmed entirely in the cave. The cave is made
to look eerie and dark making the audience
feel a bit of tension and fear from this
claustrophobic cave. The where about from
this cave is from a mountain named
Appalachian mountain which filmed in
Scotland and in a studio near London.
5. Movement-Acting
The use of movement and acting are effective in
certain parts of the clips. For the crawlers they move
in a way that’s eccentric and distinctive to the human
characters in the clip. With the crawlers movement
this make them appear as creepy/eccentric as they
move that way. For the girls they move in a way that
they're cautious/frightened. This is to show that the
girls are in a state that they don’t know who's with
them and they're are cautious/slightly frightened as
they don’t know what awaits them.
6. Props
The Descent uses a variety of props. From flashlight, to rock
climbing gear, bones, cameras and flares.
The use of the prop (bones) in the descent is effective as it
conveys all the death in this place (the cave) and also it gives
a scary image as we can imagine that’s a foreshadow of
what will happen to the girls. The Use of another prop such
as the camera is good in giving the audience that first
person view as we feel like were in the cave with girls. Other
props such as the rock climbing gear, flashlight, flare etc are
used to show the activity that the girls are doing which is
climbing/exploring the cave.
