CAREER EPISODE – 1
a) Introduction:
The project on ‘Solar Car’ is the foundation of my first career episode and this was completed by me
while completing my graduations. I was enrolled in Kurukshetra University in their regular course of
Bachelors of Technology in Mechanical Engineering. I worked on activities of the project within specified
location of the project. My work on this particular challenging project began in August 2012 to June
2013.
CE1.1
Duration: Month 20xx to Month 20xx
Location: Place , India
Name of the organization: XXXXX Uniersity
Position Title: Project Engineer (Mechanical Engineer)
b) Background:
CE1.2 This academic project furnished the designing and construction of a solar car that would facilitate
easy travelling for daily commuters with virtually no cost as it would operate with renewable solar
energy.
CE1.3Cars are premiums and commonly used mode of transportation in present times. So, shifting focus
to an eco-friendly transport medium would be beneficial for the society on a massive scale. To meet the
energy requirements blended with monetary benefits, I decided to design a prototype of a solar
powered car. I completed design parameters with major calculations and assessed its possibility. I made
certain that proposed design should be completely independent of fossil fuels and would be an
environment friendly transport option.
To complete aforementioned project in a successful way, a design analysis of designing of a solar car
followed by execution of design was performed. It was my lone project and I took care of all major
technical plus non-technical parameters of project completion. Thus, I concluded these project
objectives:
1) Preparation of schematics of the proposed solar powered car.
2) Completion of electric vehicle rating calculations.
3) Performed solar panel test
4) Software implementation of the project.
5) Completion of chief project documents.
CE1.4 Nature of my work consisted of effectual data gathering process for making designing of solar car
feasible. I was responsible for analysis of major components used in the solar car and evaluation of
motor power rating. I took care of mathematical computation of results aligned with the experimental

works. I was liable for total circuit layout followed by prototype testing. Finally, I made technical
submittals of the project in English for college authorities.
CE1.5 Solo execution of any project is very difficult and thus I took continual support and guidance from
my project guide. I constantly took help on major project issues from Head of the Department of
Mechanical Engineering of the college.
CE1.6 Statements of my project core duties were as given bellows:
a) Responsibility of project planning using Project Life Cycle approach staring from the beginning till
end of the project.
b) Liability of evaluation of need of the project followed by project overview and future scope of the
project.
c) Accountability of collecting major project components keeping in mind economic aspect of project
making.
d) Obligation of fundamental design of solar powered car associated by calculations and data analysis.
e) Concerned for design review and software implementation of proposed prototyping.
c) Personal Workplace Activity
CE1.7 I knew that successful completion of this solar car would give me higher university grades and
thus I took care of every single point in the designing. I submitted a brief project synopsis to my project
supervisor mentioning all the technical details essential for designing this solar powered car. I also
included my project plan and working methodology in the synopsis.
I narrated my motivation behind the selection of this project and waited for its approval. Finally, the
synopsis got approved and I was given green signal to start working on it.
I made system architecture of the solar car as below:
I took reference from my college books and also used internet to resolve my technical queries. I
prepared a 3D model of solar car as below:

I thoroughly considered all the major specifications of the car and used derivatives to extract key
technical details. I made many calculations for solar car based on the desired acceleration plus speed.
Followed by this, I computed solar panel wattage besides the battery capacity to gain desired maximum
round trip distance on solar power alone. I utilized a charge controller with additional charging from AC
lines along with a motor controller to effectively control the direction and speeding of motion of the car.
I prepared the chassis of the prototype of the car with a rack, a suspension system, drum braking
system, and pinion steering system. Finally, I proposed an aerodynamic outer body shape of the solar
car.
I made a system diagram of solar powered car as below:
I used 50W semi-flexible solar panels in the project

I prepared a graph of Power vs terminal voltage and current vs. terminal voltage for the solar panel as
given below:
The final configuration of the setup of the solar panels on the car was as shown below:
12 V unsealed lead-acid re-chargeable battery was used in the project. I completed electrical wiring
system of the solar car by interconnecting motor controller, gear box, motor, batteries, acceleration

pedal, panel, and charger. I took care of applicable safety measurement and low power instrumentation
components.
I divided the electrical system in these two parts:
• High-Voltage, High-Current Power System
• Low-Voltage, Low-Current Instrumentation System
For the suspension system, I used Vice-grips to tightly hold the shock absorber piston despite the fact
that changing the old nut off the previous shock. I used a ratchet for the removal of the lower nuts off
shock mount on the lower control arm. Other than these I used a jack stand, a jack, hammer, allen key,
screw driver, and a wrench to complete the installation.
It was difficult to make a pleasant outer body due to the fact bending system and different associated
gear was not to be had. The intension of this mechanical work was to convert a conventional automobile
into an electric one. Because the battery packs and the sun panels were giving required output in the
course of the take a look at drive of the prototype vehicle, its miles predicted that it's far going to work
whilst those gadgets can be established on a completely functional car.
In the end, I was successful in designing and installation of all major components of solar car.
CE1.8 I used my engineering skills and technical knowledge in following tasks:
Computation of motor power rating, aerodynamic drag force on the car, force of acceleration, and
system capacity.
Circuit set-up for performing solar panel testing in the project.
Performed battery test and preparation of graph on the results in MATLAB.
Designing of suspension system and gear box.
Designing and installation of braking system.

Quality checking of all components.
Aerodynamic shaping.
Computation of drag coefficient.
Comparison of the results of output responses on input variables.
Preparation of timely project reports for the college management and project supervisor.
CE1.10
Problem Statement: during my solar car project we were stuck at a place where we have to balance the
solar car on its suspensions and to make it smoother while travelling.
Solution: I had a meeting with my project supervisor and brought the matter into his notice. He
suggested me to used internet and in case of any issue refers latest journals on solar car. So, I did both
these tasks and used mono cross suspension for that so as to make the ride smoother and confortable.
Finally, I was successful in getting accurate and desired results.
CE1.11 I used a novel approach of solar powered car design and used latest software techniques to
complete the project. In about three months the whole chassis and the prototype was built.
CE1.12 I also gave importance to answers of my queries and suggestions of my project guide. I regularly
had project meetings to solve major project issues
d) Summary
CE1.13 This project was my first practical application of knowledge of mechanical concepts as well as
expertise gained in an experimental set up. It was a big achievement from my end and proved to be
advantageous in my career growth. I used a strategic case study approach of project execution that
aided me correct results and a successful project experience. The project will be beneficial for managing
the machining parameters to enhance the preciseness of machined parts. I am really happy to see that I
