1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN
PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY
TEXTS?
2. INTRODUCTION
When creating my two ancillary tasks (the digipak and the magazine
advert) I made sure that I was creating links with my main product (the
music video). I did this to make sure that the intended target audience
would realise that all of the products linked in some way and were
created for the same music video. In order to do this I made sure that
my artist was used in all of the products, being the main aspect in all of
them.
3. MUSIC VIDEO
When creating the music video I had to take into consideration that all
of the products should link together. I did this through the colours being
used. I wanted the main colour in all of my products to be black as this
is the main colour used in a lot of hip-hop texts. I have done this
through the mise on scene of my artist as he is dressed all in black for
most of the music video. I have also created links with the other
products through the body language being shown in all of the products.
5. DESIGN OF THE DIGIPAK
The design and layout of my three media texts contain multiple conventions of the hip-hop genre.
All of my ancillary tasks consist of very simple colour schemes along with my artist to make sure
that all of the products are easily recognisable. When analysing other hip-hop digipaks I noticed
that there was a huge range of different styles being used, from very simplistic colours and fonts to
very creative and advanced techniques in certain digipaks. This gave me a wide range of ideas to
look at to help me complete my digipak. When creating my digipak I went for a very simplistic
approach with the colours and text however, I used some slightly advanced editing techniques.
When creating my music video I focused completely on the artist. This meant that I had to make
the artist the central point on both of my ancillary tasks as well. Therefore I made by artist the
largest and most important part on my digipak. Most of my music video is focused on the
performance of my artist and this meant that I needed to show similar body language on my
digipak to what was being used in the music video and, by doing this, I have allowed all of the
attention to be drawn to my artist. This has also helped me to create a clear link between my
digipak and my music video.
7. COLOUR AND FONT
By looking at all three ancillary tasks we can see that the main colours being used are black
and white. The main reason for using black for the main colour is to represent the dark and
negative stereotypes that a lot of people have towards the hip-hop genre, and the white
represents us challenging the stereotypes that a lot of people have towards by making the
music video brighter and appropriate for younger audiences. Although there is a very
noticeable contrast between the two main colours they go well with each other and balance
out. Due to us focusing on the hip-hop genre I wanted to focus quite heavily on the body
language being used by my artist to help all of my products stand out. This also helped create
links between all of the texts, making them more recognisable to audiences. The images used
on the album, the disk and the magazine adverts all contain a lot of similarities which makes
them all look very similar, demonstrating the effect that the colour and images used have
when combined together. When creating my ancillary texts I used the same simplistic font on
each of them as this makes it easier for the intended audience to read and understand.
8. COSTUME
When looking at the costumes used in my music video, the artist uses very
similar clothing in both. The style that he wears in quite conventional to a lot
of white hip-hop artists in the US as he, for the most part, is wearing
fashionable shoes with black trousers and a black, branded, t-shirt. Wearing
conventional hip-hop clothing is beneficial to us as it helps the audience relate
to my hip-hop artist. To help my ancillary texts link together I have featured
my artist in the same clothes for all both the digipak and the magazine, as
well as in my music video. This shows how all of my products work together to
help promote my artist whilst also creating their own image to the intended
target audience.
9. TARGET AUDIENCE
My music video along with my ancillary task should appeal to my intended
target audience. The audience that we’re trying to target are British people
between the ages of 12-20. I have attempted to keep the same theme between
all of the texts that I have created in order to create as much consistency as
possible between to keep a high standard for my products which could help to
make them more of a success. By having all of the texts link together it
should mean that, when the audience is looking/watching one of the texts,
they would be able to identify the similarities with the other products that I
have created. Through the use of body language I have tried to make all of my
texts more conventional to the hip-hop genre. This has also helped to make
the music video, as well as the artist, more relatable to my target audience.
