Manipulation Of Light In the Nano world Module : In this Module students discover the different light phenomena like Diffraction, Interference, Iridescence of Light But in The Nano scale.
the product Idea is : The Algae is used to produce light instead of using electricity to save our country’s power and at the same time this will be a renewable source of light
2. • Introduction
• Activity 1: Light and their spectrum
• Activity 2: observing diffraction
– Part A: Diffraction in Water Waves.
– Part B :Diffraction Simulation.
• Activity 3: Observing interference
– Part A : Two Slit Simulation.
– Part B : Making Interference Transparent.
– Part C :Wave generator .
• Activity 4: Observing iridescence
– Part A: Peacock feather
– Part B:Two colors at once.
• Design Project : Fabricating Phonetic crystals
• Product Idea : Light Producing algae
3. What is light? Light is an electromagnetic
radiation that is visible to the eye.400-750nm
Refraction: when light Moves
between different mediums
cause changes in speed and
direction
Reflection :When light hits a
reflecting surface it reflects
with same angles and
direction
4. How did we use it? We have two types of light we used as we
mentioned . As you see 1- we covered it with CD-R grating 2-slit 3-
source 4-move till you see the spectrum
Description : observing the visible spectrum of light in 2
types of light ( florescent , incandescent )
5. Conclusions : in the fluorescent light we see a
continuous and discrete spectrum and in the
incandescent we see a continuous light spectrum
6. Description : Observing waves in water when there are
obstacles (diffraction)
What did we do? We put some obstacles and tested if
waves can pass.
Conclusion : water wave bend as they pass by
obstacles or through an openings.
7.
Observing diffraction and interference in waves
To start with we saw 3 different measures of the slit
while trying to find the best length of it
Conclusion : waves show as clearest when the slit is
close to the wavelength(lamda)
8. when the wave passes through two slits it is best to be
as the wl because there will be more waves showing
but if you go higher or lesser it will not be showing
perfectly (n/an)
9. In this activity we used a wave generator to
generate some waves as following.
As a result we learned that there are nodes and
antinodes in a wave because of an occurring
interference nodes=des/antinodes=ins
10. Observing iridescence
in order to do this we had to use a hardened paper box
with two holes (Eyes, light) and 3 different types of
light (in,flo, ultra) as we change the light source the
color of the feathers center changes cause of its
structure (np).
11. As we see the color of the feather changes as we change
the light because of its structure and we found out that
there are 2 primary ways of how iridescence occurrs
1) Nanostructure ( Peacock feathers)
2) Thin film (soap bubbles)
12. observe iridescence on different gift wrap
Conclusions: At black surface complete
reflection
At white complete transmission.
13. In this activity we used the same polystyrene
solution and put it on a slide separated from
each other the first one 250 and 2nd 350 then put
it on a heater and waited for the results
Conclusions :each solution has given a
different color cause of the change in its size
of the nano particles
14. Algae that produces light using
photosynthesis.
15. The Algea is used to produce light instead of using electricity to
save our country’s power and at the same time this will be a
renewable source of light
16. We will abuse the photosynthesis of the Algae
and use it as an alternative light source and an
oxygen generator it only needs a container with
two holes for the algae cause it needs 2 filters
one to only suck carbon dioxide and one to
produce the oxygen
17. Make an alternative source of light to save
electricity and uses carbon dioxide which helps
in maintaining the earths pollution. We didn’t
apply it to anything yet cause we couldn’t find
the recommended items / equipments. And we
hope it will solve some of these problems
18. In this experiment we faced many obstacles
and the biggest one is that we couldn’t find the
necessary items or equipments to do it but we
will give you the idea and you should
investigate further cause this is an amazing
source of light . Imagine there no longer is
electricity . This will be the alternative light
source for us
19. We would like to thank you very much because
we learned a lot about light and its
phenomena's which we didn’t even know , we
learned how to work as a team and
experienced a different learning way that is
very enjoyable.
20. Many thanks to my teachers, school and AL-Bairaq team
from Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), Qatar
University for supporting us during our journey with a
AL-Bairaq.
Also, I would like to thank the Partners, sponsors
UNESCO, Qatar National Commission, Ras Gas, Maersk
and Shell.
