  5. 5. www.scottish-enterprise.comwww.scottish-enterprise.com How are we performing?  World leading science, great ideas - international leader in R&D expenditure  Strong record of spinning out companies from our university base Scotland accounted for 23% of new spinouts created in 2012/13, more than any other region in the UK and up from 16% ten years ago 21% of total successful exits were completed in Scotland, more than any other region including 2nd placed London at 18% BUT In contrast to our performance in HERD, business R&D expenditure (BERD) in Scotland lags significantly behind that of the rest of the UK (0.59% of GDP, compared with 1.09% for the UK).

People – a management team with entrepreneurial experience and ambition - we need to both develop the skills for growth and align entrepreneurial talent with a track record of scaling companies in global markets to innovative ideas. Innovation + Entrepreneurship = potential to grow companies of scale. 2. Growth funding – access to Series A £1- £5m plus funding to provide sufficient growth capital to accelerate growth and anchor the company in Scotland We provide intensive support in preparing the business for Series A – honing a compelling propositions and supporting companies in better promotion and investor engagement.

  8. 8. www.scottish-enterprise.comwww.scottish-enterprise.com The entrepreneurial journey from bench to market • Prof Martin Tangney (Edinburgh Napier) has developed a process to produce sustainable butanol from the by-products of whisky distillation – Celtic Renewables led by CEO Mark Simmers now in the process of securing major investment. • Two innovative companies came together to reap the benefits of their complimentary technology and skills - Insignia Technology to develop a range of intelligent inks used in freshness sensor labels for foods.
  9. 9. www.scottish-enterprise.comwww.scottish-enterprise.com The entrepreneurial journey from bench to market • Silent Herdsman have developed a “smart farm” decision platform for herd management in the dairy farm sector. Initially a R&D programme from ITI Techmedia which spun out from Strathclyde University. • Taragenyx have developed coatings aimed at helping patients heal faster with less pain when implants are infected. A YIE funded project now selected to join the London Stock Exchange support programme – The Elite Programme
  10. 10. www.scottish-enterprise.comwww.scottish-enterprise.com Commercialisation Support THE PROGRAMMES Proof of Concept Programme (PoCP) - funding, entrepreneurial skills development, programme management and experienced commercial talent aligned to ideas with identified market potential. Enterprise Fellowships help researchers, post-graduates or recently graduated students spin-out their business ideas. THE SUPPORT Entrepreneurial Support provides intensive support to pre-start and early stage with the growth potential of £5m turnover in £5 years or a valuation of £5m in 3 years. The High Growth Start Up Team help build the management team, working with them to create a viable and fundable business proposition.
