4. CORRELATIONAL STUDIES
 Collects a set of facts organized to two or more
categories.
Measure parents disciplinary style.
Measure children's disciplinary style.
 Examine the relationship between categories.
 Correlation reveals relationship among facts.
Eg: More democratic parents have
children who behave better.
 Correlation study does NOT dettermine WHY two
variables are related-just they are related.
 Correlational studies are helpful in making
predictions.

Correlation cannot prove causation.
 Democratic parents produce better
behave children
 Do behaved children encourage parents to be
democratic
 May be unmeasured common factor.
• Eg: good neighbourhood produce
democratic adults as well behaved children.
 Doesnot mean they are not useful-correlation in
smoking(3min)

6. Correlation only shows strength of
relationships
 Helpful for making prediction
 They do not show the direction the relationship working.
 The do not reveal if there is another variables that would
be causing the relationship.
