EVALUATION QUESTION 4
1. How did you use media technologies
in the construction, research,
planning and evaluation stages?
2. Cameras
• I feel like cameras were one of the main technologies that I used overall in my
promotional package, I relied on cameras on the journey there, back and on the
mountain. I had already made a few videos so I wasn’t a novice when it came to
operating the cameras for video and pictures and with the size of the internet
these days there was always an online tutorial if I ever got stuck. The only problem
that I ever encountered, was pairing together file formats between the Cannon,
GoPro and the Nikon. Sometimes the files didn’t like being together but with some
tweaking it eventually worked out. Also because of the different image processors
in the cameras the color grading on the videos was different so I had to spend
some time making sure that the colors visually matched each other.
3. Tripods, Fig Rigs, Mounts
• These again were a main piece of media technology used in my music
video. The GoPro mounts were used for POV shots and time lapse videos.
The Fig Rig was perfect when snowboarding down the mountain with a
camera. It kept the camera pretty still and was easy to maneuver while
creating the shots I wanted. The tripod again was perfect for taking the
photos for the ancillary products and the use of some still video shots. The
only problem I seemed to encounter is that some of the GoPro mounts
snapped under pressure which wasn’t ideal however they were easy to get
around and replace certain parts.
4. Apple MacBook Pro 2015
• Again my Apple MacBook Pro 2015 played huge part of my promotional
package. All my research was conducted on it, all of the planning, the
construction was made on it and the evaluation was made on it. It ran all
of the editing programs I needed and never had any problems. It’s
completely portable and I took it to France with me. This aloud me to look
over the footage when I got back to the Chalet and from that I knew what I
needed to reshoot and what was good. Because of it’s 1TB of internal
storage I could store all of my footage on the laptop and not have to worry
about storing it on SD cards and hard drives and worry about corrupting
them.
5. Photoshop CC
• Photoshop is one of my main weapons when it came to editing software's,
unlike many of my peers who used InDesign I did all of my ancillary
products on Photoshop because I don’t get on with InDesign. Generally
didn’t have any problems with Photoshop other than some files wouldn’t
copy across which was just a case of changing the file type and it would
work. The only other problems that I endured with Photoshop was that
because the files were HD quality and there was a lot of layers, once the
photo was exported as a JPEG the file was quite big in size which meant
that some applications wouldn’t work with it. The only way around this
was to lower the quality of the image, which in the long run wasn’t to bad
but I would of preferred to keep the quality higher.
6. Final Cut Pro X
• Final Cut Pro X was hands down the power horse of this
promotional package. I spent over hundred hours editing my music
video and perfecting it. It is probably one of the most reliable
programs I have ever worked on, not once did it crash on me or
ever didn’t do what I needed. It converts files to any type of file you
could possibly need. It has color grading software integrated in the
program and is so simple to use. I wasn’t a novice to FCPX either
however I know a couple of my peers were and they picked it up so
quickly. It’s a professional piece of video editing software at
industry standard.
7. YouTube
• YouTube is a great tool for a lot of different reasons.
It was great for finding online tutorials for editing
techniques, digipak dimensions and album layouts. It
was also my primary way of uploading my drafts and
final edits of my music video in order to get it on to
my blog.
8. Blogger
• For my promotional package I used blogger nearly
every second of every day. My whole promotional
package from start to finish is online. It made it super
easy to layout and customize the blog. It has labels on
it in order to place posts together and make it easier to
navigate around my blog. It is also convenient because
it’s all in the same place and you can embed things
from other websites onto your blog.
9. DaFont
• DaFont is arguably one of the easiest websites to use, it is an online
database of free fonts that people have made. However throughout
the course of my promotional package it was the one thing that
caused me the most problems. The problem that I encountered was
that it wasn’t very compatible between the website and Apple.
Which caused all sorts of problems like fonts not showing up, or
downloading and wont transferring to certain programs. With a lot
of troubleshooting I finally managed to get them to work but it
took me a couple of valuable hours just to get them working.
10. Storage Devices
• SD cards were also very important because without them I wouldn’t
be able to record anything. To me I knew from other experience
that it was crucial to spend a bit of money on these because the
better quality SD cards are worth it. They hold more storage and
also the higher the class the quicker they are for transferring videos
back and forth. Although I keep all of my videos on my MacBook I
also had an external hard drive that I backed all of my footage onto
just incase anything was to happened to my Mac.
11. ThingLink
• I didn’t use ThingLink in AS because I didn’t really
understand it, however my peers said it was a really
good program to use and made the layout on their blog
look neater and less text orientated. So, in A2 I decided
to sit down and learn to use it. I wouldn’t say I’m an
expert at it but I understand the basics. Although I still
don’t particularly like it, I think it’s a good application
to use.
12. IPhone 6S
• My IPhone 6S was very helpful and did a whole range of things. It
was used to Google things a lot of the side of a mountain when
cameras broke. Or good for locating certain spots through searching
the web. The camera was used to take pictures to show crew
members what I was looking for in particular shots. A few clips have
been filmed on the camera, although they took a lot of editing and
color grading in order to match the quality and color of the
professional cameras.
