PRESENTED BY,
AGLAIA
Introduction
• 11% of the total CO2 emissions are due to the steel industry
while the cement industry contributes about 9% to it.
• Thus steel and cement are costly as well as environmentally
dangerous.
• bamboo utilizes CO2 during its production and releases O2.
• It can emerge as a naturally sustainable and a low cost
construction material.

Bamboo
• Bamboos include some of the fastest-growing plants in the
world, due to a unique rhizome-dependent system.
• They can grow 910 mm within a 24-hour period, at a rate of
almost 40 mm an hour.
• It has a higher specific compressive strength than
wood, brick or concrete and a specific tensile strength that
rivals steel.

Advantages of Bamboo
• It is fastest-growing renewable natural building
material.
• easily available & Eco friendly.
• masonry as an independent building material.
• cost effective and easy to work.
• can be easily bend, give desired shape and can provide
joints to suit the construction.
4Bamboo in organic shaped buildings
• Its enormous elasticity makes it suit to earthquakes Prone
areas.
• Local available material to some areas, which tries to carry
the local tradition & vernacular Architecture of that place.

Disadvantages of Bamboo
• It requires preserving otherwise it will loose its strength.
• It is shaped by nature.
• It needs coating as it is attacked by fungi, insects etc.
• Even with high strength its joints as always weak.
• It needs advanced guidance with detailed study and codes.
• They are not fire resistant.

Treatment of Bamboo
• The aim of bamboo preservation is to eliminate the bamboo
sugar content and other carbohydrate that attract fungi and
insects.
• In large-scale building projects, chemical methods are more
suitable for bamboo preservation.
• Open tank for cold soaking, modified Boucherie, pressure
and heat treatment are the most commonly used
preservation methods against biological attack.
Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 7
Open Tank Method
• This method is also known as the “leaching bamboo”
method.
• It is a simple soaking method and provides good
protection for bamboo culms.
• This leaching process can reduce the starch content of
bamboo besides providing preservative to the bamboo
culms.
Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 8
Modified Boucherie Method
• It is an effective method for freshly harvested bamboo culms.
• The advantage of this treatment method is that the
equipment used is low-cost, can be easily built, easy to
transport and could be used directly in the forest.
• This method is one of the best in terms of penetration,
distribution and retention.
Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 9
Pressure Treatment
• It is carried out in some countries, both with water-borne
preservatives and with creosote.
• It is one of the best preservative methods for bamboo but is
also expensive, and may not be economical for low cost
materials like bamboo.
• It may only be applied to thick-walled bamboos because
culms with thin walls tend to crack under the applied
pressure.
Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 10
Heat Treatment
• The properties and durability of bamboos were also
known to be improved by heat treatment.
• This technique involves the immersion of bamboos in hot
oil bath at a temperature range of 160–220°C for two to
four hours.
• Vegetable oils with high boiling points such as palm oil,
coconut oil and hemp oil is commonly used for this
treatment process.

The Property of Bamboo as Building
Construction Material
1.Tensile Strength
• It is good in tension more than the compression.
• Tensile strength is high in outlying layer of bamboo.
• The fibers of bamboo can take tension upto 400 N/mm2
which is greater than the steel.
• But connection to transfer tensile strength is not possible.
12Bamboo in organic shaped buildings
2. Compressive Strength
• Slimmer tubes have high compressive strength than bigger
tubes
• Slimmer possess better material properties since bigger
tubes have minor part of the outer skin, which is very
resistant in tension.
• The portion of lignin inside the culms affects compressive
strength.
Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 13
3. Fire Resistance
• High content of silicate acid shows its fire resisting ability.
• Filled up with water, it can stand a temperature of 400° C.

4. Shrinkage
• The shrike rate of bamboo is more than the wood when it
losses water.
• The shrink rate is 15-17% of wall thickness.
5. Elastic modulus
• It has high elastic modulus due to the accumulation of highly
strong fibers in the outer part.
• Enormous elasticity makes its suitable to earthquake prone areas
Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 15
6. Anisotropic properties
• It is an anisotropic material.
• Properties in the longitudinal direction are completely
different from those in the transversal direction.
• There are cellulose fibers in the longitudinal direction, which
is strong and stiff and in the transverse direction there is
lignin, which is soft and brittle.
Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 16
Construction Principles
• Bamboo less than the size of 1.5 inches should not use for
reinforcement purpose.
• The criteria of clear spacing of bamboo rods should not
less than maximum size of aggregate with adding 0.25
inches.
• It should be tight securely while placing the concrete with
regular interval of 3 to 4 feet to prevent it from floating up
in concrete.
Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 17
• It has similar reinforcing design to steel reinforcement.
• In columns it resists same compressive load tat taken
by concrete bamboo displaced.
• It has low modulus of elasticity; in flexural members
some cracks are developed.
• When crack can’t tolerable, steel reinforcement design
or other designs are required.

Organic Shape in Architecture
• They are figures that have a natural look and a flowing, curving
appearance.
• They are curvilinear or free form shapes, as they can be made of
angles, curves or both.
• Examples are found in leaves, plants, and animals.

Construction Techniques of Bamboo for
Organic Shaped Buildings
• Organic shape buildings use arch, spline or other curvature
shape.
• 2 methods are used to curve bamboo’s.
• They are hot bending method and cold bending method.
• We can use natural curve bamboo for this.
• Bamboo can grow in curve shape; depend on the species, soil
condition and environment.
• They can be joined in a row to create a continuous curve shape.
• This method can be applied to create arches or spline roof ridge.
Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 24
Hot bending method
• They can be done in 2 ways.
• By immersing bamboo in the
lukewarm water until the fibers
are become soft enough to be
curves using clamp
• By heating bamboo to the
desire heat (>150o) that cause
bamboo fibers become soft and
easy to bend.
Cold bending method
• Cold bending method can be
done by splitting bamboo into
planks then tie it into become a
bundle; or by slashing bamboo
rods the curved it.
Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 25
Conclusion
• It have excellent engineering qualities for construction purpose
• It is economical for reinforcement use since It is easily available
than steel
• Many countries of the world are rich in bamboo production
which is a good point for the reinforcement use having good
engineering quality.
• In urban areas and poor areas it is very useful for construction
purpose and also economical.
Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 26
• Bamboo is weak at node section failure can occur.
• According to research in next few years production of steel
will reduce hence the utilization of natural and eco-
friendly materials should be used.

  • 2. Introduction • 11% of the total CO2 emissions are due to the steel industry while the cement industry contributes about 9% to it. • Thus steel and cement are costly as well as environmentally dangerous. • bamboo utilizes CO2 during its production and releases O2. • It can emerge as a naturally sustainable and a low cost construction material. 2Bamboo in organic shaped buildings
  • 3. Bamboo • Bamboos include some of the fastest-growing plants in the world, due to a unique rhizome-dependent system. • They can grow 910 mm within a 24-hour period, at a rate of almost 40 mm an hour. • It has a higher specific compressive strength than wood, brick or concrete and a specific tensile strength that rivals steel. 3Bamboo in organic shaped buildings
  • 4. Advantages of Bamboo • It is fastest-growing renewable natural building material. • easily available & Eco friendly. • masonry as an independent building material. • cost effective and easy to work. • can be easily bend, give desired shape and can provide joints to suit the construction. 4Bamboo in organic shaped buildings
  • 5. • Its enormous elasticity makes it suit to earthquakes Prone areas. • Local available material to some areas, which tries to carry the local tradition & vernacular Architecture of that place. 5Bamboo in organic shaped buildings Fig:1 Bamboo Source:http://2d0kr92f96zwxdnni 4d4ifav.wpengine.netdna- cdn.com
  • 6. Disadvantages of Bamboo • It requires preserving otherwise it will loose its strength. • It is shaped by nature. • It needs coating as it is attacked by fungi, insects etc. • Even with high strength its joints as always weak. • It needs advanced guidance with detailed study and codes. • They are not fire resistant. • 7. Treatment of Bamboo • The aim of bamboo preservation is to eliminate the bamboo sugar content and other carbohydrate that attract fungi and insects. • In large-scale building projects, chemical methods are more suitable for bamboo preservation. • Open tank for cold soaking, modified Boucherie, pressure and heat treatment are the most commonly used preservation methods against biological attack. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 7
  • 8. Open Tank Method • This method is also known as the “leaching bamboo” method. • It is a simple soaking method and provides good protection for bamboo culms. • This leaching process can reduce the starch content of bamboo besides providing preservative to the bamboo culms. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 8
  • 9. Modified Boucherie Method • It is an effective method for freshly harvested bamboo culms. • The advantage of this treatment method is that the equipment used is low-cost, can be easily built, easy to transport and could be used directly in the forest. • This method is one of the best in terms of penetration, distribution and retention. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 9
  • 10. Pressure Treatment • It is carried out in some countries, both with water-borne preservatives and with creosote. • It is one of the best preservative methods for bamboo but is also expensive, and may not be economical for low cost materials like bamboo. • It may only be applied to thick-walled bamboos because culms with thin walls tend to crack under the applied pressure. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 10
  • 11. Heat Treatment • The properties and durability of bamboos were also known to be improved by heat treatment. • This technique involves the immersion of bamboos in hot oil bath at a temperature range of 160–220°C for two to four hours. • Vegetable oils with high boiling points such as palm oil, coconut oil and hemp oil is commonly used for this treatment process. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 11
  • 12. The Property of Bamboo as Building Construction Material 1.Tensile Strength • It is good in tension more than the compression. • Tensile strength is high in outlying layer of bamboo. • The fibers of bamboo can take tension upto 400 N/mm2 which is greater than the steel. • But connection to transfer tensile strength is not possible. 12Bamboo in organic shaped buildings
  • 13. 2. Compressive Strength • Slimmer tubes have high compressive strength than bigger tubes • Slimmer possess better material properties since bigger tubes have minor part of the outer skin, which is very resistant in tension. • The portion of lignin inside the culms affects compressive strength. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 13
  • 14. 3. Fire Resistance • High content of silicate acid shows its fire resisting ability. • Filled up with water, it can stand a temperature of 400° C. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 14 Fig :2 Fire resistance of bamboo cane when filled with water. Source:http://2.bp.blogspot.com
  • 15. 4. Shrinkage • The shrike rate of bamboo is more than the wood when it losses water. • The shrink rate is 15-17% of wall thickness. 5. Elastic modulus • It has high elastic modulus due to the accumulation of highly strong fibers in the outer part. • Enormous elasticity makes its suitable to earthquake prone areas Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 15
  • 16. 6. Anisotropic properties • It is an anisotropic material. • Properties in the longitudinal direction are completely different from those in the transversal direction. • There are cellulose fibers in the longitudinal direction, which is strong and stiff and in the transverse direction there is lignin, which is soft and brittle. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 16
  • 17. Construction Principles • Bamboo less than the size of 1.5 inches should not use for reinforcement purpose. • The criteria of clear spacing of bamboo rods should not less than maximum size of aggregate with adding 0.25 inches. • It should be tight securely while placing the concrete with regular interval of 3 to 4 feet to prevent it from floating up in concrete. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 17
  • 18. • It has similar reinforcing design to steel reinforcement. • In columns it resists same compressive load tat taken by concrete bamboo displaced. • It has low modulus of elasticity; in flexural members some cracks are developed. • When crack can’t tolerable, steel reinforcement design or other designs are required. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 18
  • 19. Organic Shape in Architecture • They are figures that have a natural look and a flowing, curving appearance. • They are curvilinear or free form shapes, as they can be made of angles, curves or both. • Examples are found in leaves, plants, and animals. • 24. Construction Techniques of Bamboo for Organic Shaped Buildings • Organic shape buildings use arch, spline or other curvature shape. • 2 methods are used to curve bamboo’s. • They are hot bending method and cold bending method. • We can use natural curve bamboo for this. • Bamboo can grow in curve shape; depend on the species, soil condition and environment. • They can be joined in a row to create a continuous curve shape. • This method can be applied to create arches or spline roof ridge. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 24
  • 25. Hot bending method • They can be done in 2 ways. • By immersing bamboo in the lukewarm water until the fibers are become soft enough to be curves using clamp • By heating bamboo to the desire heat (>150o) that cause bamboo fibers become soft and easy to bend. Cold bending method • Cold bending method can be done by splitting bamboo into planks then tie it into become a bundle; or by slashing bamboo rods the curved it. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 25
  • 26. Conclusion • It have excellent engineering qualities for construction purpose • It is economical for reinforcement use since It is easily available than steel • Many countries of the world are rich in bamboo production which is a good point for the reinforcement use having good engineering quality. • In urban areas and poor areas it is very useful for construction purpose and also economical. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 26
  • 27. • Bamboo is weak at node section failure can occur. • According to research in next few years production of steel will reduce hence the utilization of natural and eco- friendly materials should be used. Bamboo in organic shaped buildings 27
