3. What is First Aid?
First aid is defined as medical assistance
provided to a person who has suffered a
medical emergency. Cleaning a cut and
putting a bandage on it is an example of first
aid. Emergency treatment that is given to an
injured or sick person or animal, often by
someone who does not have medical training.
4. When is first aid needed?
First aid is emergency care given immediately to
an injured person. The purpose of first aid is to
minimize injury and future disability. In
serious cases, first aid may be necessary to
keep the victim alive.
5. First aid has three key aims: 3P’s
• Preserve life
• Your first aim is to preserve life by carrying out
emergency first aid procedures. For example,
opening a casualty’s airway or
performing CPR(Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation).
• Prevent deterioration
• The second aim of first aid is to prevent the
casualty’s condition from deteriorating any further
• Promote recovery
• Finally, you can promote recovery by arranging
prompt emergency medical help.
