Many teachers desire a positive and bright classroom environment, which is also a comfort for
students. Optimism might be difficult to muster in light of world events, yet sharing it remains an
important part of a teacher’s job.
Be a role model. If a teacher aims to see positivity among his or her students, they must model it.
Children learn best when they see adults embodying the part. They mimic the reactions and the
expressions of the adults around them. Wanting kids to have a positive attitude and behavior would
mean that teachers should begin speaking in a positive language during conversations with them.
Communicate belief in them. Build them up through encouragement and correction, rather than
reprimanding them for something they failed to do. Help them to do it right, with careful correction,
and set them on the right track with enough encouragement to fuel their run. Teachers must convey
what they hope to see in them, not the actions they see that are negative.
Avoid sarcasm when speaking to kids. Say instructions directly. A teacher can communicate
calmness and respect using their words, tone of voice, facial expression, and body posture.
Practicing these can restrain teachers from judging and shaming kids.
Reinforce positive behaviors and let them know exactly what they did right so they can remember
to do it. This can be partnered with a warm, yet professional tone of voice. Find positive attitude and
behaviors in children and name them. Let them know the progress they’re making as well.
